Baalke does not value picking CBs in the early rounds. Want to know why? Because he has been successful doing so without doing that. He builds a strong front 7 and grabs high potential CBS in the later rounds. Would you agree that our defense has been pretty successful in the past few years? Lets take a look at the secondary

Players who have been quite successful with us
Chris Culliver (3rd round, almost EVERYONE said it was a reach)
Tramaine Brock (UDFA)
Perrish Cox (FA off the streets)
Carlos Rogers (FA that Redskins fans were happy about leaving)
Tarrell Brown (5th round)
Dontae Johnson (4th Round)

Look at that. The highest pick was a 3rd rounder and even he was considered a horrible pick by none other than our fanbase that knows more than Baalke.

Now, we have Keith Reaser, Kenneth Acker, Jimmie Ward, Chris Cook and Shareece Wright fighting for depth. Thats a lot of potential talent fighting for a few spots. We don't need a #1 CB, because our defense relies on its pass rush and stopping the run.

Well said. That's how I view the Niners' draft philosophy as well. I couldn't agree more.

Reminds me of the Giants Defence back whey beat the Patroits in the Superbowl. Giants front 7 was there strength
So we've loaded up on D which is great. Is it now time for a WR???
Guess who else picked all D the first 3 rounds? Patriots. Got any pro bowl skill players on offense (not including Brady & Gronk)? That would be a no.

I don't get it.. the other year we drafted so many players we had to release good players.. and remember that CB that went to the chiefs and started the entire season... now we are in need of a good cb.. i mean do we really need 10 players in this draft??? how many make the roster..
I think of the draft as a crapshoot. Nobody is going to hit on all of their picks. Good teams (i.e. teams with lots of talent on their roster already) probably go into the draft expecting that not everyone they draft will make the team. "We'll pick 10, but only 7 will probably make the cut" is likely what Baalke thinks.

But remember, the draft is a crapshoot. Even if you only expect 7 of the 10 to make it, you don't know which of the 7 are cut out for it. Extra picks gives you the opportunity to miss on a few of your picks. Extra picks gives you the opportunity to draft injured players, and stash them on IR all year (IR spots don't count against the active roster); we've seen that happen countless times, and we'll see it happen again this year with DeAndre Smelter. We used one of our extra picks on him, and he's not going to count against the roster this year.

The problem with trading up is that you it's a risk. For example, yesterday, Seattle gave up a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th and a 6th to move up in the third round of the trade yesterday. They obviously really like this receiver they traded up for. However... Richard Sherman was a 5th round pick. Byron Maxwell was a 6th round pick. Kam Chancellor was a 5th round pick. Bruce Miller was a 7th round pick. Kendall Hunter was a 4th round pick. Aaron Lynch was a 5th round pick. Dontae Johnson was a 4th round pick. There is plenty of value to be had in the later rounds. If you package mid-round picks to move up, you're forfeiting the chance to hit the jackpot on talent like that.
