It works when your OL are the highest paid players on the team, but if you are going to go for all around talent it suffers. Staley, Iupati and Davis were guys who would command high salaries. Boone might eventually, but he's agreat example for college players on how much you can screw up your career using alcohol or drugs before the draft...so he is an inexpensive guy so far.
Staley is still the only lineman demonstrating the ability to adapt to any line style. Boone is OK but still spends too many plays blocking air. I've noticed teams going heavy on our right side...an extra defender on run downs, which should open up a short pass...somewhere! Come on Chryst...find that opening! Oddly, instead of a stacked box, defenses now just have to stack the niners left side...giving them a bit of an advantage.
If a return to the WCO requires Baalke's departure then bon voyage...safe journey and all that! If he can adapt and they find an offensive coach who matches our historical offense...alls well and good.
I haven't given up on Baalke yet. I think he is very good at spotting young talent, and very good at managing the draft and trades and the cap. Sure, nobody bats .1000, but we've lost a lot of veteran talent, and I'm really quite hopeful for our young replacements.
Here's the deal. If you step back and look at the NFL from a clean sheet of paper, it's easy to see with the rules in place, it's a passing league. Points come out of the passing game. If you are a running team, you're not going to be a high scoring team, and your defense must be spectacular. And even if you can do that in the regular season, it's a loser in the playoffs when there is no tomorrow and teams will gamble and throw everything at you. They used to call it Marty Ball, as Shottenheimer went from team to team, racking up a whole lot of wins in the regular season, but rarely a win post season.
OK, so now we've decided we need to dominate offensively in the passing game. The first thing you need is an innovative offensive minded head coach. A successful defensive head coach will quickly lose his OC to a head coaching job elsewhere, and then the system changes, and since continuity is so important year to year on offense, and really sharp offensive minds are hard to find anyway, you are screwed.
OK, now what do you need to give this offensive smart guy for a quarterback? Are you going to tilt toward physical brawn, or quick thinking sharp brains. Duh! What good is a really good complex offense that can keep the defenses a step behind, if the QB can't keep up and execute it?
Yeah, Baalke better get a big picture clue soon, or he will be gone.
