The 49ers absolutely don't know how to handle absolutely any of this, which is probably one reason among 1 billion why Colin Kaepernick absolutely wants out of there.

If there is a wrong turn or false move to make, if there is a public-relations tumble to take, somebody in a 49ers leadership position will do it.

It's like they're compelled to commit public idiocy on a regular basis

Let's assume that Kaepernick has had enough of this, and let's assume that the proof is the NFL Network's Wednesday report that his agents have sought permission to seek a trade.

And let's assume that the timing of the report was not incidental.

It came just a few hours after coach Chip Kelly told local reporters that Kaepernick wants to stay on the team and a day after general manager Trent Baalke said Kaepernick "absolutely" will be on the team past the April 1 deadline to guarantee his $11.9 million salary for 2016.

Well, I think the most natural 49ers follow-up to all this would be: Oops, never mind for now.



Of course, the 49ers do not have to grant the permission or agree to trade Kaepernick to a preferred destination even if they allow talks.

But this isn't exactly a positive sign for Kaepernick's continued presence on the 49ers roster, I think we can conclude that.

Look, if you've been following this situation from both sides, not just swallowing the 49ers' PR line whole, you had to know there were storms ahead.

You had to know that Kaepernick logically felt betrayed by all the petty leaks from 49ers management last season and understandably had decided never to adjust his contract for the 49ers, after he gave up large bonus money so that the 49ers (he thought) could spend it to re-sign it on some of his teammates.

The 49ers never actually spent that money; they kept it, fired Jim Harbaugh, Kaepernick's biggest fan, and then spent much of the 2015 season blaming their downfall on their QB.

So the off-season is here and now Kaepernick reportedly wants out. This does not seem illogical, unless you're Jed York or Trent Baalke, I guess.

I would assume Kaepernick's agents want to find a team of his choice that will trade for him and then re-do his deal, perhaps give him the same amount of money spread over several eyars.

The teams I would circle: Denver, the New York Jets, Houston and Cleveland.

If they can't find a trade, then Kaepernick probably would be just as happy getting released and becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Would any team give up, say, a mid-round pick for a QB who was benched for Blaine Gabbert last season and underwent multiple surgeries recently?

I think so, because Kaepernick would presumably agree to a new deal as part of a trade agreement and the surgeries were relatively minor.

And also: How many available 28-year-old QBs out there have three career road playoff victories and also used to scare the heck out of Seattle?

Yes, teams will line up to talk to him, and Kaepernick's agents know this.

So, even if the 49ers didn't know this report was coming (I think they should've) Baalke's stance on Tuesday was just foolish.

Baalke never once actually said the 49ers planned to pay Kaepernick the $11.9 million for the 2016 season, so I always assumed Baalke meant that the 49ers would like to have Kaepernick around, probably at a lesser salary.

But there is no way that Kaepernick would agree to that–unless Kaepernick somehow became utterly committed to Kelly, and there is no sign of it.

Meanwhile, Kelly's comments on Wednesday were slightly more thoughtful but still pretty clunky for somebody who couldn't possibly know where this might be headed.

For Kaepernick, I believe the worst-case scenario is for the 49ers to keep him at $11.9 million (which is not so bad!).

Overall, his agents want him to get a new start with an organization that hasn't spent months denigrating him to national media members.

So, going semi-public with a trade request makes it harder for the 49ers to stomach carrying him at $11.9 million into this season.

They could still decide to do that, of course. But, as I keep saying, it never has been the likeliest option.

Kaepernick doing whatever he could to get out? That was the likeliest, and it looks like it just started.

The 49ers lie to themselves, everything else spins from that, and this week it all just blew up in their faces, one more time.

I would be surprised by that because if you don't think you are good you don't get this far, but it wouldn't surprise me if he felt he shouldn't have to... but that would mean leaving purely out of hurt feelings...and that is a sign of immaturity and a sense of entitlement. If he doesn't want to come in and give it his best shot and let the best man win.... with an opportunity to play for a coach who has done wonder with QB's,then we are better off. A good,confident player doesn't run from competition. He should relish the chance to prove his detractors wrong.

Does it really matter if Kap soured or doesn't want to be here? He sucks. If the 49ers could get something for him they would trade him. If he can pass a physical before April 1 they would cut him
