I know reading comprehension may not be a strong point for some posters - where in the above post does anyone see anything to indicate that I think Gabbert is better than all those guys?

Try to focus. If someone says all Gabbert is doing is dumping off 4 yard passes, I'd like to respond with a fact-based argument showing that his YPA is actually a little high - this flies in the face of that narrative whether or not you chose to recognize that.

IMO, Gabbert is a VERY good back-Up QB and they are not easy to find.

I agree.

It's obvious what your implications are, the problem is that Gabbert gets most of his yards in Garbage time when the D has let up. So comparing his 7.1 yardage to QB's on superior teams is pointless and shows nothing.

You are right. People see what they want to see... All I'm seeing in Gabbert is a qb who is scared to take chances until the game is out of reach. The biggest thing is his "better play" is not translating into anything meaningful.

This is true. However, Gabbert is the more polished QB and with less experience. I think he can learn to be more aggressive as the talent around him gets back to normal.

That right there tells you how worthless that stat is. Our offense has been hot Gabbage yet somehow he grades out higher than Rodgers? Again, my guess is he grades high because he's so willing to take 7 yards on 3rd and 10 with no chance for YAC. It happens like four or five times a game at the very least. A real QB is looking to find the first down.

Edit: Actually, he throws short almost every 3rd down, so I'd imagine it happens about 7 or 8 times a game.

The quote about being aggressive later in the game seemed to me to be taken out of context. I think Chryst is making those decisions, not a back up QB trying to work his way into a starting job.

Torrey Smith said this and I don't think he meant Gabbert was too conservative. It was a complaint in SD when Chryst was OC as well. Not really a go for the throat kind of play caller.
Gabbert is less experienced? He's start like 35 NFL games. He's got plenty of experience. He is just bad. He pics up plenty of garbage stats. To say he is more polished than Kaep is delusional. He's a different QB that's for sure more of a pocket guy. But they both stink from the pocket. His 3rd down completion is just atrocious. What a dumpster of an organization

Oh the irony.

Polished in what way exactly?
I know some feel that Kaepernick had a "bad" year in 2014.... there are others who feel that having Jonathan Martin (who is out of the league) and Marcus Martin (who should be out of the league) block for you is recipe for disaster.

and of course the whole coaching and management drama..

either way, even with that being said... Kap had these numbers for the season... while having to play defenses like the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Rams twice a season.

19TDs 10INTs 3,369 yards 86QBrating along with 639 yards rushing (7 20yard + runs)

but besides those stats... I think this got overlooked

regarding Kap and 3rd down conversions... and mind you, almost all of our games were close....weren't blow outs.. so there were many situations where we needed to complete many 3rd downs...and the defense weren't playing soft or anything, to allow us. Our average to go on 159 attemps on 3rd down was 7.7..which is similar to what Gabbert has since he took over I believe.

Which Passers Were Most Effective on Third Down in in 2014?

Kap was ranked 7th behind Romo, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, Big Ben, and Tom Brady..

But out of that list of 42 QBs, Kaep's 7.7 to go on 3rd down had him with the 12th most yards needed... .with 11 other QBs having to face harder situations.

and the writer randomly singled out Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick had a bad year, right? Well, not so much on third downs, where he was one of the most productive players in the league.

the point of this post is that, even during his *worse* year as a QB.... Kap was still damn good enough to not worry about the defenses dictating the 1st down marker on third and long.

Still looking forward to seeing what he does next year, with an improved oline... with us or another team... because I think anything is going to be more improved than having Devey, Martin, and Pears blocking for you.

Not to mention most of the 3rd downs where like 3rd and 10 or 15. Rarely did we have a 3rd and short.

The talk that Kaep had a bad season last year is a myth. He had a 4 game stretch towards the end of the season that he was not good. 2 of those games were against the Seahawks. He was a top 10 passer midway though the season. And just like that, people want to dump him. No mention that the coaching staff, line, talent around him fell off a cliff. I think a lot of the negativity with Kaep is coming from people who never wanted him to begin with.
