Yes...I know...but hope springs eternal! Was hoping he actually had a point I could rewatch...

Boone, Staley, Martin and Looney all impressed me and I didn't see a problem at RT either. I'm glad now that Watt didn't play, though I thought it might be a good test. For the first game of preseason it's nice to see them function together and have success...it won't get easier!

Also...Hayne did a great job of being patient with his blockers, which surprised me. He only had one long run but on the others he was finding the open spot and dipping around his blockers. He was too upright but that might be his style and it sort of matches Hyde...hmm...Bush, Hyde and Hayne sound like a law firm...or almost three streets in downdown SF!

The line did well, I'm not concerned about them not going up against Watt or Wilfork as there are very few lines nd players that can contain those guys. If they had lost out to them then half of the Web zone posters would be calling for them all to be cut.

Let the line grow and gel, this display will give them confidence to build from and will assist when they come up against the top dline players later in the season.

Sure it was a huge hole, but he did juke the safety and then got a LOT of extra yards with a good stiff arm. He's hard to bring down.

I liked his other runs as well, even though he picked up minimal yards. He seemed to make the right moves but the D was ready and had more defenders than there were blockers. He also knows how to avoid direct hits better than I thought he would...though that's important in Rugby so I should have expected it.

You can't teach "vision".

Guess I should have expected the world's greatest Rugby player to have great vision! It's even more important when guys are hitting you from all sides...with no pads! He probably feels the pads put him in a bubble..."Is this really fair mates? Crikey...I feel like the bloody Uluru!"

M Martin continues to get pushed around and spun around. Very concerned about this awful looking dude as a player. We shoulda took Gabe Jackson who is bigger and BETTER and available.

Ugh, would be another in a long line of failed guards we took with high picks Baas, Rachel, Smiley. (Iupati had a few good years but was a big liability in pass protection).

And we've had more success with undrafted free agents and lower round picks. Isn't Daniel Kilgore supposed to return soon?

I hope this move to zone blocking means we'll be wasting less day 1 picks on guards that suck.

Rewatched the first half, before the wheels totally fell off the bus, and I'd advise both of you to do the same. Martin played very well and I didn't see his guy make one tackle. He followed his block on Hayne's long run and knocked him down so he couldn't pursue. He kept his guy walled off from the QB both from the RG and the OC positions.

Not sure why it's open season on Martin but for a 21 year old the guy's doing well.

Edit: would appreciate either of you referencing a specific play (maybe by time) so I could see him totally blow a block.

Watch Martin on the Kap scramble that Kap chucked away. M Martin gets spun around by a lb.

So your one example is a breakdown of the total line with Kaepernick taking off? But Martin's guy didn't get to CK or make a tackle, or...am I missing something? Where was Boone's guy during this play? I did watch that play carefully and Martin was not responsible for the pressure.
How nice was it to see stretch runs? And a QB with actual time? And quick throws so the line didn't have to block for 4+ seconds?

Yes! It was indeed nice to see a...POCKET! At least, it seemed like what we use to call a pocket...back when we had a pocket! Was nice to see guys using their vision t adjust to the rush and make the right block! Boone seemed reborn compared to last year.

The OL play makes our former coaches look even more questionable!

Went back to rewatch CK's scramble play again! Martin mirrored his guy, who stunted around the center so Martin turned to help out Pears. Not sure anyone even touched Martin and his guy was lost in a pile under center. Pears continued to block his guy after CK was way out of the pocket. #51 was the player putting pressure on CK as he ran to the sidelines and he had been on the ground at the LOS but made a good hustle play to get some pressure on Kaepernick. Why people have to make up stuff, even after being challenged, to denigrate a player is beyond me!

I missed the game, and don't want to read through 10 pages of BS to find a few honest opinions, so WRATH, SOFA, NC...how was the oline?

Dude, Boone and Staley look good on the left side. M Martin is still overmatched. Looney was so so but not horrible and Pears did better then I thought. As for the 2nd sringers, B Thomas was OK not bad at RG and T Brown at RT is strong but slow vs edge rushers. Basically if the 49ers can secure the right side then the Oline will be fine.

Thanks guys.

I know you catch some flack, from time to time, but your assessment of the O-Line play seems pretty honest.

after watching it a few more times, Martin was blind sided from his left side and didn't see it, Looney's guy went straight for Martin
