I'm sure Kyle wants to have young potential at each position, but he'll to find satisfactory solutions in the meantime. It seems like he's relying on vets for the guard position - Fusco, Person, Cooper, Tomlinson (youngish vet) as he builds the rest of the team. In due time, I hope.
I have total confidence that Shanahan and Lynch are going to do what it takes to succeed. It will take another year to get the rest of the pieces in place but they have done so much it is somewhat dumb to criticize them. But it's what we do here! MY bad!
Strengths by area:
FQB: done with JG
WR: pretty amazing transformation over the past two years! Goodwin, Garcon, Pettis and the young backups make a solid NFL group
DBs: done with Sherman, Witherspoon and a young group of speedy smart guys
DL: all but the pure pass rusher...ouch
LBs: almost done with Foster and Warner; can another guy step up?
OL: 3/5 done, may be done if Tomlinson and Garnett become better by end of the year
RB: set back with McK's injury but this is not a concern with a Shanahan offense. He'll find ways to use who he has available
Needs:
1. pure pass rusher
2. OG (if Garnett and Tomlinson do not improve)
2.5. Swing OT
3. improvement at any position
Great post ,dtg, and thanks for summarizing all the fantastic moves Kyle has made in a total rebuild of our team. ..with a couple exceptions. Last yr, when C.J. was just gettting cockroached on every stinking snap, i complained loud and often about not having somebody, anybody for OL blocking. When JG came in, he continued to take hits, but nowhere near as badly as cJ. Sure, he got rid of the ball quicker. But the hits still kept coming. I was challenged so often and loudly that finally, i gave in and figured if i was the only one thinking we needed more OGs, (ok there were 2 others of note, NC and CC, plus a couple others), then i must be one of the few out of step with the rest. So i gave in and accepted that Kyle and JL would get that fixed and fast in FA and Draft...ie they knew what they were doing, and had it handled.
I won't list the names of the half dozen or so who literally pounded me but they know who they are. And then we pass on a very obtainable sitton. Much worse, of the 4 or 5 instant OG starters in the top 40 picks, we easily could have traded up for one. We didn't We took no one. Got McG, (no complaints there) and then Pettis . Lastly we got Warner...all sterling picks. Fantastic picks. Oh, and kyle didn't like having a fat kid who couldn't come into camp at 350, and decided he was a bad apple. Also couldn't Zone block . Helluva pass pro guy and blocked power or straight ahead just fine. But kyle felt he was a bad influence (weight and no ZBS) so traded him. Just imagine if he had kept him back one yr to be there for an emergency need in the OL...which we had by then end of 3 qtrs in the new season.. Trent would have been awful nice to have and could have been moved inside to RG.
So essentially what Kyle did was to get that hotshot WR /PR/ KR in Pettis (great pick BTW), instead of insuring our FR QB. Everyone said this is a 3 yr rebuild, so why does kyle have to get a WR right now instead of a desperately needed OG.? That was kyle thinking with his Johnson, and cojones, not his brain. That was a terrible move IMO but no doubt we got one helluva game breaker. But what good does a top notch WR do if your QB is under siege and getting beat to crap every play? Kyle made big mistake here. HIs choice of McG was excellent.
BAcking up a tad, kyle had bad luck with BEadles, Fusco, and Kilgore (he was here already), in that none of those guys could block power or zone. They were awful . And worse, they had replaced three duds in DEvey, Martin and PEars....3 worst linemen we've ever had. So kyle's Picks to replace those duds just flat out did not work. And he missed on keeping Kilgore, and getting Fsco and Beadles. We had only two decent blockers on the OL and Trenton was one. He didn't do ZBS and he was fat. So kyle schidcanned him. Another too big cojones failure. This is hyper testosterone i am talking about here and taking a huge risk once we have our FR QB. Way too big a risk. But as mentioned before, a cadre of posters , good ones, BTW, convinced me i was a little old lady for thinking so.
So Kyle needs to ease off the testosterone personnel moves, and be a whole lot more worried about the health of his FRQB. Would i rather have any other HC/GM? Hell no. I love these guys. But kyle has made some blunders and they have centered around the OL. ...particularly OGs. I think he got to thinking the same thing that i was doing, which is "make this into a 2 yr rebuild". With the Pettis pick, that is what he told me. No lie that should have been one of the 5 OGs taken in top 40 picks. Ok, that is great in the retrospectoscope, but i posted as much until finally i accepted i was one of just 3 or 4 guys who were out of step with the rest of the marchers.
Just not being so hot under the collar to unload Trenton would have helped immensely. Right now, I have no idea WTF to do as i cannot see any good choices. OGs were there in abundance in draft and before that in FA. I will say regarding OL, kyle has a major league talent choosing deficiency which has hurt us 2 yrs in a row. He needs to recognize that. The cooper deal? Jeez, didn't he see him play last yr? He was terrible. PERson and Garnett were decent choices, no argument. Magnus I believe is a good choice. But looking at injured warriors and assuming they will fit into his plans? Bad thinking. IF guys are borderline, as NC has posted, Cripes, at least make sure they are healthy. GArnett wasn't ,cooper wasn't, and PErson....i think had injury issue. Protecting your $137 mil guy like that? Muy malo. Very Bad.
So i love my HC /OC and could not ask for anyone better. He is special. He is superb. He is miles ahead of his competition on game day. But dammit, i wish he would have just a touch of humility when it comes to picking OLs. Good or great job on McG. Bad job on fixing OGs . Basically he bet on the come. He bet all the injuries would be fine and everything would turn out okay. At the very least that shows a horrid disregard for not thinking more about the health of our main guy, FR QB JG. He thot lots of Pettis and saw all that he could bring to the table...Er...playing field. But he disregarded a 3+ yr weakness at OG on the 49ers and now it has come back to bite him in the azz.
I just hope NEXT TIME...he fixes the dang OG slot and puts that ahead of every other single thing. I know, i know, ER. Well, he just has to figure that out. We absolutely cannot go another season with krapt at the OG slot. Oh....despite my protestations re: Laken...that worked out very well....so i was wrong there, thank God. And he better be saying the beads along with me that nothing bad happens to our FRanchise guy. IF that happened, every single fan and both HC and GM would be sick at heart the rest of or lives. If some of the rest of you want to say the beads with us we welcome all prayers that keeps Jimmy healthy.....frankly, rather than prayers, i would much rather have an OG that actually blocked and protected our guy. Absent that, i guess i go with the beads.
