Garnett struggled with a knee bruise in preseason, but played very well the last two preseason games. Person impressed throughout preseason with his reliability and familiarity with the scheme. Magnuson went down with a hammy and will be on IR for what--eight weeks? Coleman and Tobin were picked up to add depth. Seems like every reasonable move was made to help in the rebuilding of the o-line--perhaps the most difficult unit to successfully mold on any football team.

It was a tough day today against a very tough opponent--but we all knew it is going to take several weeks for the o-line to develop the chemistry that is needed.

One game and some bitter disappointments, but not fair to completely condemn JL and KS for their efforts in rebuilding the o-line.

To the contrary one has to be impressed by the athleticism and guts displayed by McGlinchy today--which shows that shanny and lynch made a wise decision in drafting him at #9 and dumping Brown. imho,

Dumping brown was foolish, they have no depth at tackle. Brown was cheap and could of had him for another year as the swing. Sorry azz guys like Gilliam get your qb killed. Brown was one hell of a luxury to simply cast off with nobody to replace him on the depth chart. The fact is mcglinchey hasn't been a better run blocker then brown.

I think brown showing up close to 400lbs during minicamps sealed his fate.

The point is Kyle and Lynch should've been concerned when we had a bunch of hurt guys all pre season. We had s**t depth and literally ran through all of it in 60 minutes.

I don't think that point was made at all. Sounded like we were just clowning on a rookie because he had to slide over to Guard against the best front seven in football. The concern about preseason injuries are definitely valid, but how many R Guards are we supposed to dress?

We need healthy depth. We spent a lot of money on players that have done nothing. Spending some more on the OL needed to happen.

Moving McG to OG is the offensive equivalent of putting Thomas at LEO...it's stupid.

Lynch and Shanny had all offseason to come up with a better plan to protect JG...
...coming into regular season with questionable (at best) depth at all positions on the oline

Only the most casual 9er fan would have seriously expected a fault-free game today, on the road for a home-opener against a bona-fide SB contender.

And I do not care how well Brown played or did not play for NE today. Time to let go of the love affair some had for Brown--he's no longer a Niner! Thank goodness.

Yes, I believe they did what they could to improve the OL but due to some bad luck had to scramble. Richburg was an excellent pickup, McG fits the scheme better than Brown, but injuries to the OGs have taken a toll. Let's not forget, injuries to--Magnuson, Cooper, Garnett, and Person definitely delaying improvement at those positions.

I'm glad Staley is solid and they found a center. If you remember back to the OLs of the Nolan years...yikes! But it is also important to remember Minnesota is one of the best defenses in the NFL this year and we were hit in the mouth right off the bat...yet were still in the game giving Minnesota a pick six and failing to score from close. Two plays away from winning the game is sort OK in my book. Next up! DETROIT!

Its not like it was part of the gameplan to have him play there. Both Person and Garnett went down and he ended up holding his own just fine.
Me thinks we're going to give Cooper a call...

It clearly is part of the depth plan. Garnett has not proven that he can stay healthy. So the next option is to take our 6'7 OT and put him at OG a position he has never played.

Its more like an emergency plan. I doubt that they went into the game expecting Person to get hurt and then for Garnett to get hurt. When teams lose two guards in one game, they generally tend to require some radical adjustments.

Both Person and Garnett are good to go for next week reportedly.

Old Walsh/Bobb philosophy...cross training so you can move your best players into numerous spots. McG has been practicing and or he would have looked much worse.

Here's where I'm having the greatest issue with the OL, particularly the RG position. And I think it's okay you disagree with someone without classifying it as an over-reaction.

The RG discussion has been extremely lengthy all off-season. The *only* game RG was reasonably stable was against the Colts. But again, let's rewind the clock a bit and look at the strategy at RG; the 49ers went out and brought in Cooper to start at RG from the Cowboys hoping his injury would heal and he'd play. That didn't work out. Garnet was penciled in as the starter. Garnett gets a knee bruise and KS publically questions the severity of the injury. Going into the last week of the pre-season KS announces that both Person and Garnett are still competing for a starting spot. Where I'm struggling here is that all three options at RG this year were either journeyman or hopeful injury return for someone who had never played in the scheme and for which many had lower hopes. Again, I think Garnett can be good, but he needs to prove it. I'm struggling because there wasn't a clear backup plan to Person other than Garnett who already had an iffy reliability record. The backup plan was to move Gilliam to OT and McG to OG. Compare this to their backup plan at OT which was to bring in more healthy OTs.

I know you can't fix everything in year one or two. However, protecting the $132M guy has to be the team's #1 priority and at this rate, given the defensive lines we'll be facing, I'm praying JG can make it through to the bye. Is that an overreaction? Maybe. But the Vikings explicitly attacking the gaps between the RG and RT was not lost on me at all. As teams continue to prepare for the 49ers, this will need to be addressed in a big way and there needs to be a better backup plan than "move McG to RG."

I'm hoping that changes soon.

What other option was there? Move DeFo to RG??? or Mitchell? lol

Seriously, you have been monitoring the changes being made along the o-line--I know this from reading your previous posts.

Like the rest of us, you have concerns, but please don't let the bitter disappointments and bad luck of one game overwhelm your faith in Shanahan and his system.

Doesn't say he did not practice at RG during TC. And since you can't have unlimited backups available for the game they used the backup RT at RT and slid McG into RG. Not dumb, just not optimum...as losing two RGs does not lead to optimal decisions.

Did we not have any guards left?

Is Gilliam at Tackle better than someone else we have at guard?
