Trade speculation is heating up around the NFL, and many believe the San Francisco 49ers could make a move ahead of the trade deadline after injuries have thinned their depth at multiple positions. However, any potential move must make sense for the 49ers, particularly if it requires giving up valuable draft picks.
General manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning and was asked how active the 49ers have been in exploring trade options.
"I think you're always in active mode," Lynch acknowledged, noting that a significant part of his job involves always looking for ways to improve the roster.
Speculation has linked the 49ers to several possibilities, but nothing official has emerged.
At 4-0, the 49ers are in a position to buy ahead of the trade deadline as they look to maintain their momentum throughout the season. They face a tough test this weekend against the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
"I always say, I think our history speaks to [the fact] that we will not hesitate to improve this team if we can, and we've done that on a number of occasions," Lynch said. "So we're doing our jobs, and real proud of the way our team's playing."
Lynch also pointed out that getting injured players back on the field could provide a significant boost. The 49ers have several players working their way back from injuries, and the team hopes they can return and contribute later in the season. Defensive lineman Mykel Williams, for example, expects to be activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list ahead of this weekend's NFC West showdown.
Rookie defensive end Romello Height also returned to action against the Denver Broncos after undergoing hand surgery.
"We've had a number of injuries," Lynch continued. "Hopefully, we start getting some of these guys back and stop losing people, because sometimes you can see those as acquisitions—when you start getting these players back. We're already playing this well. Man, when these guys come back, we're going to be hard to deal with.
"So looking forward to that, and we'll always try to improve our team in any way possible."
