I'm pretty sure he'll end up on the PS, someone like Person or Magnussen would Cover Center on Gameday, Shelton likely only gets activated if Richburg goes down, remember you only have 2 active backup lineman on game day so they have to cover all 5 spots between them.
Agree. Practice squad or IR due to a hangnail injury in practice.

One thing I'd like to see in preseason is how fast and agile he really is, by seeing how he blocks on a run play to the outside from the center position.

Lotsofnegativityabout the offensive line this off season, but I'm feeling pretty good about it. Looking forward to a quick, aggressive, andnast bumch up front. Not an over powering bunch of human bulldozers. A group of fast nasty athletes getting down field and causeinf some havoc!

I don't think we will see much seven step drop, or passpro, I expect more boots, roll outs, and moving pockets. Changing the launch point so speed rushers can't just run to a spot and wait for Jimmy to drop back.

We have seen Jimmys ability to change his launch point. And move well to avoid pressure, those skill will be important. It appears we want to wear defenses out not by running down their throats, but by making them chase. Chase on outside runs, chase on roll outs. Run them ragged left and right.

Make them chase screens, and dump offs, keep them quashing with play action. This is a very sophisticated offense, like nothing we've seen in the last 15 years!

As of right now I would guess Gilliam likely has his name penciled in as one of the active backups and the other will likely come down to a battle between Person, Cooper and Magnuson.

Agreed.

Kyle likes his veteran OL. My early guess:

LOT: Joe Staley; Garry Gilliam
LG: Laken Tomlinson; Erik Magnuson
C: Weston Richburg; Mike Person
RG: Joshua Garnett; Jonathan Cooper
ROT: Mike McGlinchey

Looks about right, I would like to see EM grab the 7th OL spot on the 46.

That would be nice. Lots of versatility with the backups. EM can play some G and T, Person can play C or G, Cooper can play both G spots and Gilliam can back up both T spots.

Gilliam can play inside at guard if needed as well and Cooper has played center before. Magnuson was looked at as a center at one point and hopefully gets reps there thru the offseason. Having versatility with those 2 backup spots on the 46 is needed.

Well said!

I'm not a big fan of Tomlinson, but I can see how having him at one of the guard spots adds an element of strength to the OL. Kyle wants to be good at outside zone, that's known, but in short yardage situations it'd be nice to have someone that can plow ahead to get one yard and a cloud of dust. Being able to run behind Staley/Tomlinson, or pull Tomlinson to lead block adds a power element to the OL that could be missing if the interior OL is all about agility.

I am still really concerned about the G positions. We play 2 games against dominant interior PR. I know Jimmys release really helps the oline, but he took far more hits than I was comfortable with in the games he played last year and imo we've not done much to upgrade what was such an obvious weakness.

Athletic guards can cut block well, avoiding chopping penalties. We aggressively cut the big boys early, and they slow down all by them selves. Puts their heads on a swivel. Cant wait to see Jimmy roll out, and both guards cross block low, right at the knees.

Good point. I was wondering if the coaching staff would ask him to be Joshua Garnett 2.0. But maybe not.

I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing many cut blocks last season.

We were a very different online last season, I believe personnel's lack of athleticism limited to play book.

I think we will see much more zone runs, toss sweeps, jet sweeps, moving pocket pass plays, like waggles, boots, and sprint outs.

If we are not running that's kind of plays and using aggressive blocking techniques, we might as well have a bunch of big fat human bulldozers.

This is interesting to monitor, whether Kyle's OL will cutblock on the backside for outside zone. We did discuss this during the 2017 season. I hypothesized that they didn't cutblock so that their run blocks look like their pass blocks - everyone stays on their feet. I just took a look at some Alfred Morris/RG3 highlights and did not see the backside OL cutblock on outside zone (Kyle was OC), but that was some highlight clips.

Golitta, your point is valid because being able to cutblock is an agility block so perhaps he didn't ask Tomlinson/Fusco/Brown to cutblock because they aren't agile enough? We'll see. Let's hope it looks nothing like this lol

Nevermind, I just saw a couple plays where the WAS OL cutblock on the backside on outside zone (from 2013).

Two consecutive plays @1:52

Regarding pulling guards, here's an interesting play where Tomlinson pulled and made a nice kickout. It's a Counter Lead but ran to the strongside.

Niceee. That's a tricky play to read for the LBs because the wrapper's and trapper's flows conflict. The sneaky windback design for the wrapper(Juice).
