I've always liked versatility on the OL and they had some with Looney, Martin, Tiller, Farrell and Boone. Now they have to rebuild that chemistry...with better players. Martin will either make a huge jump due to off season work or find himself without a spot. Too many other young guys in the mix. One of the comments about Garnett that really made me jump for joy was his awareness of what was going on around him. He adjusts to the defense rather than just standing and watching guys run by just out of his "area" of concern.

The bottom line is it seems like we have 10 guys who seem like they should make the team: Staley, Beadles, Kilgore, Garnett, Brown, Tiller, Thomas, Martin (due to youth and lack of center depth), Theus, and Cooper.

We will likely carry 8. Two of these guys are gone. Likely a tackle and a guard.

I think one of Theus or Cooper will be out.

I see Staley, Beadles, Kilgore, Garnett and Brown as locks.

Then I think it will come down to Thomas, Martin or Tiller for the last two spots. Whichever guys show the most versatility I think will get that spot. Both Thomas and Tiller will have to show an ability to pitch in at center if they want to stick around IMO.

Think Cooper and Theus both make it. Thomas has yet to do his audition...so no opinion yet.

Between Tiller and Martin, that is easy...Tiller.

Martin goes. He auditioned all last yr and showed us....nothing.

Obviously agree with your starters...unless Kilgore once again comes up lame. Then Tiiller, Garnett, Beadles , maybe Thomas if audition goes ok, get to duke it out for OC. Silberman, exacltly like Thomas.

They also started the year with tramaine Brock playing the nickel corner instead of ward. And the staff that used brooks and Aaron Lynch in coverage more than rushing the passer for the first 4 weeks. Oh not to mention barely using AA.

They probably don't like him just giving away completions

Brown must've taken River Dance lessons during the offseason (he looked nimble as **** in that one drill). I think our starters will do a good job, but our depth is real young. We don't even have a clear back up center

To me Martin has the leg up because he is our backup center. Tiller and Thomas don't have experience at C and this would make Martin close to a lock IMO. The battle is between Cooper, Thomas and Tiller. If Thomas and Cooper show that they can play 4 positions on the line they may have the edge over Tiller, but I see Tiller sticking based on his play last season.
Not to be harsh, but there were a number of times last yr, Martin ended up in the QBs lap, getting bowled over by the NT or whoever. Unless he has corrected that flaw, I would be very surprised to see him make the squad. An OC has to block in addition to snapping the ball...and Martin showed poorly on that last yr. Noticeably poorly. I still think he is gone, but realize there are a fair number of fans that really like him. If he could block, then I would be a convert. First tho, he has to prove he can stay upright and block.
Martin gotta go along with Pears.

Wish we heard more about the possibility of Tiller getting more reps at center, or see what the progress with Ian Silberman has been like.

Silberman isn't without ability. I remember he did quite well at BC in one of the match-ups I watched with him going up against Leonard Williams at RT. Just one game, but showed Silberman had something to work with.
Well, Kilgore is either healed and can revert to form of two yrs ago, or we need one of our OGs, Beadles, Tiller, Garnett, maybe Silberman,, or Thomas...one of them is going to have to snap if Kilgore doesn't have a better yr this yr ...and that includes, good health. OR, we could perhaps get a an OC as UDFA late, or trade for an OC.

Found this article about Chip having the center make the line calls. Makes sense since the QB might only have a few seconds at the LoS and it should be spent assessing other things.

http://igglesblitz.com/2013/06/communication-and-calls/
Some teams have the QB make line calls and protection adjustments. Other teams prefer the Center to do that. There isn't a right or wrong way, only what the coach prefers.
Chip Kelly's system gives the job back to the Center.
Here is how the protection is set on a given play.

"It's all depending on whether it's a three-down or a four-down defense," Kelce explained. "And then from there, depending on the protection, there's an object linebacker that the offensive line takes. And then off of that, then the running backs can all determine who they have, and the tight ends can determine who they have, and the quarterbacks understand who their hots are off of."

The QB can override the calls if he feels there is a need to do so, but for the most part the C will be getting things set. The move back to the C running things has nothing to do with individual players. This is just how Kelly likes things done.

I hate saying this but couldn't we put Thomas on the P.S.?

Do you really trust that the coaching staff last year evaluated him properly? I dont.

I hope he ends up returning to his previous form where he completely locked down a pre-injury Clowney. If he wound up as a starter I wouldnt be the least bit surprised. He was looked at as an early 2nd rounder prior to his injury so hopefully he gets it together.

I thought we struck gold when we got him.

Man, if he could get it together this season we'd have the makings of a VERY solid line.
i thought they were not sold on martin being able to play center and were planning to move him to guard? at any rate, someone is going to have to back up kilgore.

somebody is going to sneak in on the 53 but being flexible. i bet there will be a few guys tried out there in camp. silberman had played there before?
