No way Boone is gone after this year and then you are looking for a RT again.
I think since we have a new staff and quite possibly a whole new philosophy i think we need to keep most players to see if the problems with some of the play from these guys was due to the former coaching staff, scheme or some other reason and see if they can bounce back or continue the downward trend. I understand that some players are just going to be too expensive and thats fine but i think we need to see what we have first. Just my opinion
Vernon has one down year due to s**tty quarterback and offensive line play, s**tty coordinating, and injuries. Now a bunch of fans are calling for him to get traded or even cut. Yeah let's just get rid of a top 5 tight end who is currently the only player on our team that has proven ability to stretch the field and replace him with Vance Mcdonald! Brilliant! People that are calling for Vernon's departure really need to take some time to think how stupid that would be. Even if he doesn't put up huge numbers, he's still a very important component to our offense in making linebackers and safeties honest down the middle of the field. Although he had a down year in blocking as well, he's still one of the better blocking tight ends.

His skills have not declined. He still has his speed and I imagine he will have elite speed at the tight end position well into his thirties. He's one of those freaks of nature like Terrell Owens, Darrell Green, Hershel Walker, etc that have amazing work ethic and their speed takes a while to decline. People don't realize what a back injury, Eric Mangini as your tight ends coach, and Greg Roman coordinating will do to your production. He doesn't suddenly suck and has dropped off a cliff in one year... GEEZ

From a coaching staff perspective we are in complete rebuild mode, which in my mind means that by the time this staff figures it out, we'll be in player rebuild mode. Unless of course we "reload." We have a SB roster right now! I'm just not convinced we have the staff to take us there. However, I think this roster will look very different after this coming year, so we better reload, aka find future starters.

Agreed that we kind of need to see what we have in quite a few or most of our players, but out of Boone, Brooks, and V Davis, only one is really worth keeping to see if we want them here long term (Boone). But then it starts to boil down how much we want to be spending on our O-line. We're already paying a lot for our 2 tackles, and we have quite a few in house options for the guard spots.

As far as if we're rebuiling or retooling, I'd call it more of reloading. Losing those 3 guys doesn't hurt long term at all, and it frees up not only some money to fill in positions of need if we have to. The draft will also dictate what we need in FA, and Justin Smiths choice to retire or not will also play in what we do both in FA and in the draft. If Smith stays, we can most likely focus on a WR or an elite CB if one slides to us. If Smith retires, then we're probably looking for some D-line help in the 1st.

Borland isn't going anywhere. I'm hoping the Mangenius finds a way to get all 3 on the field together. Also Borland is getting paid NOTHING he is a huge insurance policy at super low monthly rate for 2 guys coming off of injuries.

This. As of right now VD is our only proven deep threat on the roster.

To me the definition of rebuilding, is when you have been down for a few years in a row, you rebuild
i think we are reloading or retooling.. we have been lucky to keep a majority of the roster around for a few years but as time moves along you now have to make tough decisions on players like gore. country is out of our hands. you do not trade vernon after one bad year esp when you do not have a high caliber replacement. boorks will not be traded as teams will never do that. with the putrid pass protection we had last year something has to be done on the o line. i would like to move boone but someone brought up a good point that maybe we should keep him if we are going to let lupati walk. also we have been lucky to find guys at cheap prices like skuta and cox who have played at at very high level and now, understandably, they think they are worth more money.. the nice x factor that you can not count on before the season are the kids who played well last year like lynch and borland.. there is no reason to rebuild,, if you rebuild, then yes you have a massive fire sale of existing people ,, but i do not feel that is going to happen

good post... i went from defending vernon, to ripping him to just having no clue what to think about him and last year,, but yes he has done well for us so we need to pass last year off as a off year due to various reasons that 52 made plus just the over all damn jh drama and distractions all over the place did not help vernon or our entire team.... and of course yes, sorry to vance defenders, we do not have a good back up tight end behind vernon so he stays

Wasn't Cleveland about to trade for him at the deadline last year but we backed out?

maybe, who knows, last year was such a cluster f**k with drama and distractions,, i just want to forget about it

A lot of teams would really like to have him though... Bears, Buccs and Jags come to mind
Doubt we get anything for Brooks.

I would trade Borland though. He's a luxury, trade him for a first.

Go get Hardy off the open mkt on a short term priove yourself contract!

Draft 1a) speedy WR/ Red zone target
1b) CB
2 Duke Johnson
3 Olb
4 QB

Keep Willhoite, Moody, Skuta, Vernon and Boone and Cox. Cox should be fairly reasonable contract!
Let Crabtree, Iupati and Culliver walk!
Draft Duke as Hunters knee is too risky to rely on!

We can give Boone an extension and move him to RT where he fits better and trade A.Davis for a 2nd or a early 3rd rd pick. The OT prospects of this years draft and FA is not so great so A.Davis has some value for trading and yet we keep Boone the better player of the two. IMO, Boone is better than A.Davis at Offensive Tackle by a mile. He's too tall to be a Guard and sometimes lose the battle of pad leverage due to his height at Guard, DTs and NTs are more lower to the ground than him. He has the height and length advantage going against DEs and OLBs on the outside.
