What is the most unfortunate turn of events in 49ers history?

The fall of Eddie was my choice. Surprised the disaster when Young went down with the concussions, that lead to the QB carousal for those teams, was not on the list. Really I could have voted for a couple of PAST items,

Harbaugh being gone is a damned good thing. He was in over his head and it showed. He is not built mentally, for being a coach in the NFL, he is too inflexible. How can you guys not see this? If he had been such a great coach, he'd still be coaching in the big leagues.

drafting Kentwan Balmer and hiring Dennis Erickson.

No question it was Eddie D and his questionable (at best) business decisions...

I see these posts and it defies explanation. Its as if u forgot the sixteen years bt our previous nfc championship appearances. Harbaugh took a team that was 6-10 and got us within one poor fumble call from going to the superbowl his 1st yr. Yet somehow he was not built mentally?? I assume u say this bc hed blow up on the field. Not every1 is chill. Some of us blow up. Harbaugh was comfortable being himself. He got results. We ddnt win it all but we won more than we had been since 1995 up to his arrival. Built mentally...keep n mind ppl sd the same of Walsh. Said he was too soft, which an argument could b made as to y he left.
But i wouldnt say 'he wasnt built mentally to coach the nfl.' If he pulled a nick saban or a petrino u might have a point. Its not as if there was a lack of opportunity to return to the nfl. He's very likely to come back after a few nationall titles and heaven help us if he comes back in our conference or division. One of my favorite quotes of his was 'we ask no quarter and we give none'

Thats a quote of a man mentally built for the nfl and ill root for him as my 2nd favorite whatevr team he goes to.

Hands down this event has echoed through 49ers history to this point. I thought the current ownership had turned a corner with the Harbaugh hire, it appears that wasn't the case. Only time will tell if Tomsula can pull the shards of this fiasco together and make ownership look good again.

I feel stupid now to forget that injury! Shame on me! I still have a Hearst jersey! We would have won that game ( Falcons in championship game right?)

In divisional round, they went on to beat the Vikings.

The Niners were not a lock to win the Superbowl, the Vikings were really good and the Broncos were at the top of their game, but they had a good shot for sure.

Dead f**king serious. I wanted us to move on after the 2013 season. After all the chicken little posts I've seen from folks since this went down, I wonder why people think he was so great. He had very serious deficiencies that never were corrected. If we'd had good coaching in the Superbowl, we'd have won it, and we definitely wouldn't have gone 8-8 this past year. I don't get the whole Harbaugcalypse point of view. If we can land a good OC, this team will be much better without his stubborn, inflexible attitude.

I say this because after four years we still had tons of delay of games and wasted time outs. Because his hand picked quarterback, his wunderkind project, actually regressed under his vaunted tutelage. Because once the rest of the NFL figured out how to stop his "brilliant" offense, he had no answer other than to blame player execution, which I might point out to you, is his responsibility ultimately. I never liked his sideline antics, they were childish and surely had something to do with some of the game changing penalties that always seemed to go against us. Sure our record improved, but it wasn't like our talent level was bad when he got here. If we'd hired a better coach, and there are quite a few out there, we'd have been better off. Time will ultimately tell, but Harbaugh will be busy trying to rebuild the train wreck that is Michigan for at least 5 years before he can compete with Ohio State, much less win a championship.
