2015 Team Needs

Having 3/4s of the starting backfield returning is better than most years under Fangio.

ILB:

• Experienced players--Bowman, Wilhoite, Wheeler, Moody, Bishop, Bellore
• Young guys--Skov?

Position is deep but the level of talent has fallen quite a bit. Expect more schemes to get them off the field in favor of DL, S or CBs.

DL:

• Starting quality players--Williams, Dorsey, Dockett
• Young guys who need to prove themselves--Dial, Carradine, Armstead, Jerod-Eddie
• On the bubble--Okoye, Rush, Ramsey

Agree that they may be using more subbing and will switch to various fronts--2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 guys at times. If Carradine and Armstead jump out and become important elements on the line this year it will be a very strong group. If they need to rely on Jerod-Eddie and Dial alone it will be time to cross our fingers and hope the injury bug stays away!

RB/FB:

• Likely starters--Hyde and Miller
• Exciting additions--Bush and Millard
• Depth--Hunter and Davis

I really love the addition of Bush and Millard. They may add quality depth that the team hasn't had in years. Davis may as well but he may take a year or so behind these guys. Read that he is already a very good and willing blocker which will definitely help his chances of being used...and make Kaepernick happy!

WR:

• Likely starters--Boldin and T Smith
• Vets with experience--Simpson, Ellington and Patton
• Rookies--wow! I like so many of these guys I may go into a funk as they are all cut except for Smelter...or Anderson?

Best quality depth and starters since...ever?

Such an exciting time of year! Can't wait for TC and the season...go 9ers!

When you look at it on paper it really does not look that bad. I could see us winning 12 games this year if everything bounces our way.

MB's position rankings thus far. If the goal is to win/dominate on defense, control the TOP in the running game and take shots passing off the running game while being efficient passing, it looks like this team is built for exactly that. OL is the only big 'concern' and it's still early and it can't be worse than last year, can it?

49ers position ranking:

1. outside linebacker

2. safety

3. defensive line

4. running back

5. wide receiver

6. quarterback

7. tight end

Well, that's the funny thing Command. OL is our biggest unknown, or worry if you wish.
But anybody who didn't note we had an OL Last yr that was good at run blocking but allowed kap to get creamed 52 times, tied or at top of league for malfeasance. I would be REALLY concerned if coaching staff were happy to re-sign all those guys. Instead, they did the right thing , got rid of those that couldn't bloc for kap, and are going with some good talent that has bench sat, or was brought in. How are we going to be worse by improving on guys who couldn't pass bloc? Our only direction to go on OL is up from where i sit. And that is exactly what Tomsula et al are doing.

How does OL get worse by shedding guys who couldn't pass bloc?

We gave up 52 sacks WITH those guys and Harbaugh's bathboy, J.Martin and with HaRoman calling 5-7 step drops on go-routes against an OL which was outnumbered against 9-man boxes all run blitzing. Chances are, this OL will end up being better...or at least 'looking' better. But we'll have to see...the OL takes time to develop chemistry for sure.

Agreed, if we're rolling THAT will be a great test for this young team no doubt and should shed some light on how our coaches have evolved offensively (esp.) and defensively.

Not sure what to predict but will be pleased if the young guys step up and make up for the loss of J Smith, Willis and Gore. If they only win 8 games but they get better and better through the year, and CK looks like he is growing, I'll be content. If they look sloppy at the start of the year and sloppy throughout I'll be unhappy and hope for changes. Every season is a crap shoot but this upcoming year is really confounding to predict!
