Promoting Vic isn't an option. If Jim leaves, he leaves.

And you know this how exactly? Fangio was an assistant and a defensive coordinator in the NFL for 24 years before he got involved with Jim Harbaugh, just because he came over with with him from Stanford doesn't mean he's going to go bouncing around the NFL just because he does. Fangio's contract also lasts through 2015, meaning he can't just up and leave suddenly unless its for a head coaching position.

If the 49ers offered him a head coaching spot, it'd be silly to think he'd turn it down so he could play Robin to Harbaugh's Batman.

HE WON'T be following Harbaugh / Roman... he's tired of carrying the team. He wants to win a SB. Their comical playbook would only slow him down. It's hard enough to defend against one offense, but when your own team's offense keeps screwing up and making defense stay on the field all the time, it gets played out fast.

I don't think he enjoys battling two offenses game after game after game after game

NOW, I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Fangio as HC

Imagine what kind of guys he'd be wanting to get in here (on the defense). Get a top OC in here and this could really work out well. The players already know / like him. He doesn't BS around, he's straight up and will just bench a diva for underperforming ASAP!

I don't think you need Fangio as HC to bring in talented defensive players. Baalke is still going to be calling the shots in the front office and I don't think he's had a problem bringing in good quality defensive players. The biggest issue with Fangio as a HC to me is now you're going to be replacing your OC fairly regularly if they are any good.

So either they suck and they stick around for a few seasons, or they are good, they leave for a new team and now you've got a new guy coming in with a new playbook, not really the ideal environment for a young quarterback.

For me my top guys are Pep, Jim Tomsula or Mike Holmgren if he is serious about coaching again. IF and big IF Peyton is available him and Vic Fangio would be nasty as they won a ring before together.

I really hope harbaugh stays though love this guy its roman who is a cancer

When did they ever work together in the first place. When did Fangio ever win a Superbowl.

This is exactly how I feel. Nolan had a hard time keeping and good OC. McCarthy one year, Turner one year, the list keep going. Higher a head coach that can run the offense so it will not need to change every year with a new OC.

So, I was starting to warm up to the idea, but now you're trying to make me luke warm / cold

My main reservation about a defensive coach.....how can you ensure continuity on offense. Baltimore is having a lot of success on offense this season but if Kubiak bounces on them after a season, where does that leave them. I still have nightmares of the yearly rotating OC's here.

How about fangio at hc and bring in trestman for OC when he gets canned in Chicago. He runs a very qb friendly offense and I'm sure he won't be getting any hc gigs anytime soon after his cutler circus.

Assuming he even wants an OC position and doesn't just head back to Canada again like "screw you guys."

I can just picture Fangio in interviews and on the sidelines (calm/collective) with his best Robert Deniro impersonations

Lol....who's "we're"......

Dude just posted a top 3 defense with players off the scrap pile. No one in the entire league would have guessed that this years 49er defense would have played so gooed especially when Aldon Smith missed more than half the season.
You don't replace Fangio's proven success with a brand new coaching staff.

I don't care if we have a new OC every single year if it means the Defense can stay at a high level and we can manage to put together good STs.

We can't lose ground on the the defense that has been built over the past 4 years.

Well, we had a really good defense this year, and we're still gonna be rooting for Not Seattle in the playoffs. Here is our chance to get better on offense, while preserving the defense (defensive staff still under contract).

This! I'm probably too stuck on this but the early career of Alex Smith was so dam hard to watch that I don't ever want to see the revolving OCs again. Looking back I feel so bad for Smith, Gore, Staley...all the guys who had to suffer through that annual relearning process only to be blamed for not being a fluid offense.

LOL! This year may set a record for me rooting against teams! Seattle, Arizona, Dallas, San Diego, NE...I'll have to subdue my pride and hope for Green Bay (not wild about them but always liked that Cal guy), Denver (even though Manning upsets my stomach with his whining), Colts for Luck, KC for Smith, Charles and Reid...must be someone else.

i want an offensive minded coach if harbaugh leaves (and i dont blame him at all if he does with our immature owner and baalke f**king with him indirectly) i dont want a defensive coach who is at the mercy of his OC possibly leaving every year. weve been through that and it sucks. get a coach with a track record of burying the other team and not taking his foot off the pedal until the last whistle blows. i want a coach whos an a*****e like belicheck, peyton or fisher. they dont stop scoring til the game is over if theyre up.
