Yup and a passing game that featured he RB's a lot as primary reads. Stretch them wide, get them to hesitate and then hit them up inside in the running game.

Exactly. It still would be a tough task to take them out. They are playing much better since Wagner returned, but I think if we had taken advantage of this all game, we walk out with a win. Unfortunately, the injuries and refs played their part.

No question about it!

That sort of formation lends itself to a block and release type play. Could be an easy way to get VD going a bit in the final two games if we decided to put him in that on the line postion.

I'll be honest, these were the types of plays I thought we would see all season long with the new WR core.

should have
use their route running ability because it is their advantage
leave the verticals and digs alone that is a disadvantage
but alas.

Toooooootally! And the Hawks weakness is lateral speed, quickness (chasing players across the field) and misdirections (b/c they overpursue) heavily. Scheme alone could have done them in IMHO esp. with the personnel we have b/c, like you said, it plays to our strengths.

Crab is precision more than anybody out there. He regularly toasted Patrick Peterson because of this and could toast sherman if given this opportunity.
If you send him out there essentially running curls and fades what's the point of him being able to perfect DINO routes?
Every time he's run the DINO or a variation of the DINO he's been WIDE OPEN.
every single time.. why not see that on film and then say OK when we run those fades and double moves you get open sometimes but when you run precision routes you get open all the time. let's go to the precision...

same with lloyd
same with boldin
same with stevie

Sad. It seems so simple. You have ZERO burners on the offense, but all of the receivers are great route runners. Most people would think of crossing patterns and a lot of pre-snap motion.

Well to be honest, the way the rules are in the NFL today, offenses..and not just ours are letting the db's off the hook big time.
Everybody for the most part are running the same things.. and most involve vertical routes and slants
db's can't put their hands on you past 5 yards, you run a complicated route they have no chance. none. not anybody. not in man to man coverage. zone is the only thing that can save them.

The key to beating them is running (which we started out doing because we did it with intent and purpose.. something we should have been doing all season)
and attacking their confidence. They seemingly play out of this world fast because they study the tape, trust the game plan and don't deviate from it.

They look for their keys and play off of those every game. They said it themselves after the super bowl, if the broncos had deviated from the tape they would've gotten embarrassed and lost.. but the bronco's didn't and that's why they were a step ahead.

I agree with all of the above. It is just sad that the average fan can see it, but the coaches running things do not. It's like we have said all year; if something is working, we stop doing it long before the defense shows they can consistently stop it. Every team in this division uses pursuit and aggression, and instead of using that against them (Screens, misdirection, Running to set up PA, Bootlegs, etc.), we go to a spread passing offense with a QB that is not ready for it.

Seattle, on the other hand, uses some of the most simple schemes on offense and defense, and very rarely do they deviate. Their offense is structured the way I wish ours was. Run, run, play action, repeat. Their defense sticks to cover 1/3 for the majority of the game, and they do this so often that every player on the field has a complete mastery of the gameplan.

I dont feel that they have better players than us. In some places, we are even. In some places, we have better players. In some places, they have better players. Overall, the two rosters are very equal. There is no reason we should be dominated the way we have been. The difference is that their coaching staff plays to their players strengths. We do that on defense, but on offense, we try to fit square pegs into round holes. It is very frustrating. I hate admitting that Pete Carroll is a good coach

Continuing on the drive (from post#55), the 49ers dial up another QB draw. This would be the second QB designed run of the half. I am not including read option plays because in a read option, there is a chance the RB will take the handoff. On a designed QB run, the ball will definitely be in the QB's hands. In the Thanksgiving game, there wasn't a designed QB run until the 4th quarter.

49ers: QB draw
SEA: cover3, man coverage on backside WR (Crabs)

Kap completes his dropback and will immediately tuck to run. The TV telecast thought he ran because of pressure. This was a designed run all the way as VD has already engaged his block.

VD lets his block slip and that defender is now bearing down on Kap (orange).

Kap slips the tackle and the downfield blocks start to develop.

+22 yards

Wow, the speed. Earl saved a TD from a run that should have been stopped behind the LOS. Boldin should have kept driving Earl.

The key going foward for kap is knowing the exact moment to take off and have no hesitation. When he gets to that points it's gonna be scary. I'm always reminded of steve circa '93-'94, when we would go empty and if by chance they covered it he would then kill them for a 15-20 yard run.

We are not doing that right...we gotta be like Seattle, when Borland holding him up another guys is suppose to spear his knee with a helmet. Mario manningham remembers this.
Hey thl or jonny I was reading cosell's analysis of Kap this week and he quoted one play where Kap got sacked but said the play design was perfect against the defense called. I was wondering if you could find this play and show it, it must be one of his 6 sacks. Thanks again for this thread, even when we lose I enjoy looking at the film. Here's the quote.

"Believe me, they're designing things that should work. One of his sacks came on a play where the ball had to be thrown. It was the perfect route call against the coverage, and the ball had to be thrown. Only he can tell you why he didn't throw it."
I thought Aldon got injured on that play... damn lineman came in like a Rhino.

as far as that TD run... man Seattle wanted that game more than us.

Vernon not blocking his man on that other QB run...which could've been a big play.

Boldin not just demolishing Earl...got punked and Earl saved a TD that could've been HUGE for us.

Seattle point of view.

Earl not giving up and pushing off Boldin perfectly and quickly getting Kap

Russell Wilson not giving up, getting past Ahmad Brooks and then trucking Borland..and saving a TD from that INT return from Reid... right at the end of half. Wow what a momentum that would've sent us on.

EThomas nicely shed Boldin's block with that push off or Kap might have scored. The 49ers should run a QB draw twice a game. If they can pop one for 10 yards, it puts that thought into the defense's heads. Every dropback might be a QB draw. Any hesitation is good.
