Believe me, I think we all get it, you don't like Gase, you don't like Hamilton, you don't like Holmgren or pretty much any head coaching candidate that anyone brings up. You think Gus Malzahn is the next Bill Walsh.

Gus Malzahn is not the next Bill Walsh. Holmgren of 1997 would be a great hire unfortunately its 2014. And hiring a coordinator is always risky, even more risky when 90% of his success comes with Peyton Manning is the QB.

News flash, every single hire is risky, especially when you have a proven coach. However the situation seems so untenable, so it is likely that coach won't be back, the odds are good that nobody they find will be as good as Harbaugh was immediately, what we are hoping for is someone that will have a stabilizing influence on the roster, help improve the offense and maybe eventually take this team to the next level and win a Superbowl. I'm sorry that you can't identify the next Walsh or Lombardi but people are just looking for and hoping for the best possible candidate that realistically will be available.

You keep knocking pretty much every choice that anyone suggests or even tries to discuss in this thread, expecting, I don't know what exactly but your disapproval of EVERY candidate is well noted I assure you.

There are degrees of risk. Harbaugh was a low risk hire in 2011 given his background. Gase would be a high risk hire given his short track record. Chip Kelly was a medium risk hire given he had no NFL experience but did run an offense used in the NFL. Bruce Arians was a low risk hire given he was coming off a coach of year season. Pete Carroll was a medium risk hire given his background as a very successful college coach but less so as an NFL head coach.

i wonder if bobby petrino would be interested. he was originally hired to work with vick before he went to prison.

Like Dilfer said, Holmgren is definitely a guy that could help Kaepernick. Nothing that Kaepernick is going through is something new to Holmgren, that he hasn't previously dealt before, so that's a big plus in his column.



I don't know that I can think of anyone that I would trust more to "fix" Kaepernick than I would Holmgren. I think guys like Gase and Hamilton could call offense that plays to his strengths, but in terms of the nuts and bolts of it, Holmgren could probably rebuild him and make him better.

It would be awesome if the new Coach took on Holmgren as an "Offensive Consultant" and had him sit with Kap twice a week and review his practice and game film, working on mechanics, thought processes, and confidence. He wouldn't need to worry about scheme or gameday, he'd be coaching again, he'd be a 49er again. Easy.

I'm looking for a LONG TERM head coach and I don't see Mike Holmgren as the answer. It's still crazy that we are discussing a new HC after everything that Harbs has done.

Most college coaches have to deal with the lack of NFL coaching experience. What set Harbaugh apart was his brother was an NFL coach and Harbaugh himself had made 140 starts as an NFL QB.
