What is the worst 49er loss of the modern era?

There are many great franchises in football and other sports that have made it the Championship and lost. Just making it there is a great accomplishment. This type of entitled opinion cracks me up. 1983, 1987, 1990, 1992 have all been mentioned already and these would be at the top of my list. I consider the 2011 loss to the Giants to be the worst of the 3 under Harbaugh.

I'll also throw in two that haven't been mentioned: 1997 NFCCG vs Green Bay and 2002 Divisional round vs Tampa Bay. I believe that 97 team could have beaten Denver in the Super Bowl, had we found a way to beat Favre just one year sooner than we did. The loss to Tampa is significant because it brought on the beginning of the dark years.

The loss to the Skins in the championship game, cause we was robbed on a phantom call that cost the niners a chance at being the first and only team to threepeat.

This. Great second half comeback by Montana ruined by poor officiating. We played that game w/out Dwight Clark too. Mike Wilson caught a couple TDs...

the " just getting there is good enough" mentality cracks me up. a rams loss in the regular season can never match losing a super bowl. especially with the way we lost it when the alleged golden boy defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator and head coach all s**t the bed at the same time, then the special ed teams vomited all over the place. that was one gruesome trail back to san fran that night the people who weakly say, just getting there is good enough only say that to make themselves feel better as a super bowl loss is the most depressing loss a team will ever suffer. and yes especially for this franchise who do not go to super bowls to lose them and how any fan of this team who calls themselves a fan can simply shrug off a super bowl loss is beyond me

I agree. Losing the SB hurt but imo the team that lost to the Giants in the NFC title game the year before was better and I think hurt me more. The 87 Squad was probably the most talented team from top to bottom in 49er history and they lost to a team 1 game over .500 by double digits.

the way we lost it.. the damn coaches are supposed to look out for the team, do what is best for the team and give us a chance to win. they did not of that in my opinion and that makes it worse than the loss itself. gore rips off a huge run, he gets a rest, little james even gets two yards vs a d that is set up to stop the run, so then you bring in a well rested gore/dixon to finish it out. that is the way i imagined it at least after gore got his two yards making it second and goal from the five

I watched that greatest games special of the 98 wildcard game between the 49ers and Packers and one person believed that if Hearst didn't get injured than that the 49ers could have possibly made the SB that season. Possible back to back Young vs Elway match ups in the Super Bowl would have been a huge pay day for the NFL.

I wanna say it was Joe Starkey who said that about Hearst. I don't know if that team could have beat the 98 Vikings, but at that time a second straight NFC title game would've been interesting. Definitely agree that Young vs Elway would've been a more compelling game than Chris Chandler vs Elway.

Not trying to knock that Falcons squad too much. I actually consider the 1998 NFC Title game among the top 5 ever played.
