goddamnit, this if some b******t ass off season

Chill.

When was the last time the Niners signed a FA to a huge contract? Nate Clements? How'd THAT work out?

What have they done these last three years? Bargain Free Agents and draft picks. How has that turned out? 3 NFCCG appearances.

Every year peeps get pissed because the 49ers "lost out" on someone and then overreact when someone else signs a guy. 3 years ago it was Nnamdi. 2 years ago it was Peyton. This year it's Revis. Niners do what they do, peeps get so upset, and then the Niners win. ALOT.

Relax. This is what they do and it works.

There's no doubt that they know how to maintain success, but we need to get over the hump....as our division rivals get better we're staying the same, it's like they've become content with just getting to the playoffs. None of the moves they made so far has given me any confidence to where I can say "this is OUR year!"....... now the only thing to look forward to is the draft and hope that these rookies make an immediate impact. siiighhhhhh

FAWK!

I ain't worried about Jared Allen. We got Joe Staley and he ain't better than Aldon or Ahmad in my book at this stage in his career

I'm just pissed that they lost Clemons and upgraded to Allen. And we lose Brown and sign Chris Cook. Not exactly a "great" job by the F/O.

...Says who? Why do you assume they were going to replace Brown with a FA? I think they were looking to draft a new secondary all along and have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds to do so. Even Brown said that they lowballed him because they are probably looking to get younger there.

The Seahawks have 2 picks in the first 3 rounds. The Niners have SIX.

Free Agency isn't where you build. Its where you suppliment. If they had to start a game right now they'd have a solid starter at every position. Now that can draft a new secondary and some new WRs to groom behind those starters.

I assume they were going to replace Brown with a F/A because of we visited with Thrumond and Cook who were F/As. I understand that the draft is where you replace players, but CB is hard to replace, at least right away. Having draft picks doesn't really guarantee anything. And drafting if for the future anyhow. We are a superbolwl ready team now and needed to add some key pieces.

If we started playing who would be the starting DBs? Brock, Morris, Eric Wright? That is ultra risky.

1) Right, and they visited with Delmas and Woodson last year before drafting Reid. Thats what they do.

2) Draft picks don't guarantee anything. That's true. Neither does Free Agency. Free Agency is largely fools gold. The only players available are players another team let walk, they get WAY overpaid, and very often get released because they aren't worth their contracts. Draft is better. Always has been and always will be.

3) Starting Corners right now would be Brock and Culliver. Brock started half the season already and Culliver would have started had he not been hurt. he was hurt in camp so he'll have more than a full year to come back from ACL surgery.

Ideal? No...but if you have to go into the season with them, you should be OK...particularly with that front 7 in front of them. Was Brown ever really anything more than solid? There is a reason the 49ers lowballed him and why the Raiders got him for 3.5 when other corners were getting 10.

I guess I view it differently. I'm not looking for "get over the hump" players. Any year you are there at the end you have a chance to win it. I'm more concerned with prolonging the 49ers chances at success then going all in for one specific season. Too mnay variables.

You go all in one year and then lose your QB...seasons wasted. Just maintain excellence and keep yourself in the tournament.

Seattle just got a good pass rusher. Good for them. Its a good move. Niners still get all those draft picks PLUS Carradine and Lattimore. Plus they get Crabtree all year and Cullifer and Williams back.

Long offseason. The teams with patience are the ones that succeed long term.

I forgot about Cully, but he's coming of a gruesome injury. I hope and pray he comes back to his old form, but it is highly unlikely he will right away.

We are basically doing what you said we did last year with Reid. It was very risky then and I didn't like it. There was no way for Baalke to know he was going to land Reid and Reid would be a day 1 starter. Hey, it worked out, but what if it doesn't this time? What if we don't get that guy we were after or what if we do and he isn't ready? Last year our backup plan was Dahl and that could of blew up in our faces easily. This year the backup plan is Culliver, Cook, Wright , Morris or a rookie.

Baalke is playing with fire.

Good now Roman can throw fade routes to him and Staley.

How would he NOT be playiong with fire with a FA?

Were Talib or Revis ever real options? Not at those prices.

I ALWAYS thought they'd address the secondary in the draft.

Why? Price and Age. Niners have some big contracts coming and they can't keep their own guys if they are paying huge $$$ to another teams castoffs.

The draft is better. Always. HUGE potential. Minimal price. Minimal risk. They have 2 starters. They now have the ability to get guys to compete with them for playing time.

As for Reid, remember...the 49ers traded UP to get him. They knew he was their guy. They also probably knew there were a few guys they liked. We can't be afraid to play rookies. More and more as other players eat up larger and larger portions of the cap, we will have to be reliant on draft picks playing on rookie contracts. Thats why its so important that the 49ers keep aquiring additional draft picks.

THATS HOW YOU STAY GOOD.

IMO, our secondary has been greatly overrated for the past few years now. They needed to overhaul the position anyway. Now they have the ammunition and a deep draft at the position to do exactly that.

My sentiments exacly. I believe that if you're staying the same, you're not getting better. Why? Because someone else is getting better.

Now I'm not saying we had to go out and splurge like the Broncos or Pats but at least some moves to improve the roster so we can finally get over the hump and win our 6th trophy. Getting to three consecutive NFCCG and a Super Bowl appearance in three years is certainly an accomplishment but I want something to show for that, we need to expect Super Bowls and being undoubtedly THE best team instead of coming in second or third place every year. So far, I don't believe we did that this offseason and now we're putting a lot of stock into our draft and our rookies making meaningful and immediate impacts.
Putting free agency aside to me this offseason has been successful so far since we re-signed or extended Boldin, Dawson, Kilgore, Miller, Fangio and Donatell. Now if we can get Culliver for around Brock's deal (maybe a little more) and then extend Kap for a reasonable amount than I would call it a great offseason. Maybe we can add in a few more years for Dorsey, Skuta, Hunter or Spillman as well. Crabtree talk might go into this season or after it. With Aldon we can use our 5th year option so no hurry on him. Iupati is the only other big one and I just don't see that happening.
Wow.

Jeff Deeney‏
@PFF_Jeff1 min Not the exact same position, but Aldon Smith had 55 QB pressures in 289 pass rushes last year, J. Allen had 65 pressures in 649 pass rushes.
Susweel, why don't you and SD just PM each other your thoughts and leave the rest of us out of it? If it was up to me you would both be banned for trolling.
