dtg, before FA started, I thot we would have to draft at least two CBs, one very high, and still need to get 1 or even 2 more. Now looking at the CBs currently , it looks like we still draft that one very good CB, but he isn't alone. He has help, but I sure hope he is like Reid last yr, and ends up starting by end of TC. What looked like a real problem sure got shored up in a short time.

Agree Pasodoc! It would be great to find a CB who could step in and help this coming year. I think the coaches are comfortable with Wright, Morris and Cook backing up Brock and Culliver. Injuries are always unpredictable so I hope they land a first rate guy who can press the starters right away. Doubt the jump up for one of the top guys but the next tier isn't bad. Joyner may be a really valuable guy as a third CB. His height will keep him from climbing into the top two rounds but he may be able to cover at that level. He has played both S and CB so isn't averse to playing a physical game.

Frankly, re-signing Boldin and Dawson makes our free-agency period a hands-down win. Those guys were studs last year and will be essential going forward.

On to the draft.

Yeah. People think that because a player is already on the team, that resigning them is not a big win, but it is.

I thought Boldin was a one year rental. I thought this because I am pretty sure we had to choose between him and Crabtree in the next few years. Looks like we went win Boldin. A move I can't blame them for doing. Boldin is playing for a very good contract. Crabtree is going to want 10mil, which is 40% more than Boldin, so Boldin gives us much better cap leverage.

We can bring in some young guys and see what they do. Crabs still has a year left with us. I really like Crabs, but in the cap era you have to make tough, practical choices.

10-4 Texas Howdy on that, Brian. Sad to say I agree with your guess on Crabs, but in this game, you never know. Based on hx, Crabs holdout, money is more important to him as we already know, darn it. Everything you said about Boldin, including the fact I thot he was a one yr rental...all that, you are spot on.

Hessian, it is staring everybody in the face, but we all seem to overlook it. Re-signing two A+ guys is phenomenal. We already had a stellar yr, just with that fact...pure Baalke, which I have learned to love. Anquan Boldin here for 2 more yrs? Incredible.

dtg, Joyner at 6'2" with 42" arms...goes in top 10- 15 picks. But short, good as he is, probably will still be around in mid 3rd rd. If we got him, we would have on helluva talent who would bust his backside to show everyone else he CAN do it. Still, the height thing, unfair as it is, is just too big a handicap to overcome. Even in the 3rd rd, do you play a guy with that talent who just can't defend big, tall WRs, who are now in abundance thruout the league? I would love to have him, but in the end, you just can't have him cover those monster 6'2" WRs with the 44" arms. He is a terrific player, but I just don't see it working for us.

I still see us moving up to pick #13-15 to get a starting CB, potentially a Shut down corner in time. Could be that exceptional WR, but I still think CB. We still will get a very good WR, (maybe a slot?), but we would probably have to move up more than Trent and JH are comfortable for a starting WR. Besides, right now we don't just have to have a starter who would go in the top 5-8. I just don't see Trent doing that. Last yr he kinda established that for us, a big move will be middle of the pack, #15. There just won't be a starting WR even moving up 13-15. I just don't think he moves up more than that. We can still get a good WR, but no starter picking mid to late rd 1. The ridiculous thing is we don't just have to have that starting CB either...but I am betting we get one.

Nice article, Bill Walsh once said rounds 1-4 are starter rounds and rounds 5 through 7 and beyond are backups and developmental players. Basically the more picks you get in rounds 1-4, the *luckier* you get in getting star players. Draft efficiency is on thing, but I think what is more important is talent evaluation.
Really good article OregonNiner87

No problemo. I was excited to see the data that backs up what we all already know. We have a great front office and the Raiders suck (only team with 0 pro bowlers during the era).

It would be nice if Gilbert dropped into that range and they picked him up. He's got it all - 4.39 speed and size with long arms.

Completely agree with you crake. Last year my pipe dream/draft crush player was Sheldon Richardson. This season its Gilbert for sure.

What's the deal with the Patriots? The Patriots are undoubtedly one of the most successful teams in the league but their draft efficiency, according to this simplified analysis, is among the worst in the league. We will circle back to this issue in future articles.

What so frequently happens when your head coach is also your GM. Also doesn't hurt that the team has been highly successful so you end up with less potential for starters through the draft.

Sometimes this is a circle jerk because roman is limited by what kap can recognize. So, this isn't just kap, but we have to factor in roman too, and that makes us at a disadvantage to SEA for certain, but also all the other top 5-10 teams in NFL. How I wish someone could have recognized roman's brilliance and made him HC elsewhere...anywhere. Alas, NOBODY wanted roman as HC. So, being one of JH's friends, we are stuck. We have to live with roman, a disadvantage in the games that really count...NFCC and SB. He can get us thru the season. But he is just out of his element, maybe a "choke" phenomenon, once he gets to the big time. Hey, it would definitely happen to me. So a lot of what everyone is saying, has to be tempered by how much progress roman has made and will bring into this yr. He sure as hell needs to read the book, scoring from the Red Zone.

Lastly, I would sure have felt better if one of our signing this yr (extension actually), would have been JH.

I for one, think an important reason both Baalke and Harbaugh agree to base their offensive philosophy on a ball control power running game, is due to the cap. I've always believed that a ball control passing offense depends on players that can get expensive in a short period of time. Namely WR's and QB's. These payers are probably the most expensive offensive players next to RBs. Come the end of their rookie contracts a good WR probably is more expensive than a Good O Lineman. A good QB is a necessity whether you run a ball control power running game or a ball control passing game, so it's a Cap Wash with the QB position.

Another thing is that a power running game is just that, based on power, not agility and quickness or speed - as in contrast to the Walsh WCO run counters (18-bob and 19-bob plays). So you don't need an Adrien Peterson or Eric Dickerson with 4.3 speed to be successful. YOu just need a RB that can generate consistent 3+ and 4+ yards a carry and won't break the cap. Your O Linemen do need to be very strong, but I've never heard of big strong O Linemen breaking the cap.

I think this is an important point. Coaches with dictatorial power can fall in love and get attached to their players to the detriment of young upcoming unproven players, if they are not careful. I think the danger of that increases when a coach has a lot of success like Bellichick has, and there is no one of equal credibility in the organization to give him an argument and make him think.

The Seattle model is based on the Seifert Model that Caroll worked under, and while it has won super bowls for them and for us, it hasn't been very successful or consistent in the post cap era, as contrasted to the Patriot/Baltimore models.
So the Seahawks were able to bring back Bennett and now seems they will get Jared Allen.

Jared Allen taking second visit to Seattle

With Harvin getting a year under their system and additions like Allen....seems they are ready for another SuperBowl run.

I really do hope Roman pulls his head out of his arse this season.
