Awful lot of thoughtful post here, but we are all forgetting the elephant in the living room. Roman. Kap will be limited by what roman calls. Sometimes this is a circle jerk because roman is limited by what kap can recognize. So, this isn't just kap, but we have to factor in roman too, and that makes us at a disadvantage to SEA for certain, but also all the other top 5-10 teams in NFL. How I wish someone could have recognized roman's brilliance and made him HC elsewhere...anywhere. Alas, NOBODY wanted roman as HC. So, being one of JH's friends, we are stuck. We have to live with roman, a disadvantage in the games that really count...NFCC and SB. He can get us thru the season. But he is just out of his element, maybe a "choke" phenomenon, once he gets to the big time. Hey, it would definitely happen to me. So a lot of what everyone is saying, has to be tempered by how much progress roman has made and will bring into this yr. He sure as hell needs to read the book, scoring from the Red Zone.

Lastly, I would sure have felt better if one of our signing this yr (extension actually), would have been JH.

In the meantime, I think that we could use more than depth at CB -- we need a viable 2nd starter. Management thinks that they can find that person out of Morris/Cox/Wright/Cook/Culliver.

Personally, I think that might happen.

But it would take a really great camp from one of those guys to win it. Based on the information we have right now -- at this split second -- we don't really have a second starter IMO.

Also can someone just spell out the numbers for me with regard my theoretical discussion of Ward vs Bethea as an FA replacement for Whitner?

One poster said it was the guaranteed money difference...I just don't really know what that means. What is the difference, and how does that help us assuming that TJ Ward is rock star and would be our safety til say 2018.

Again, just to be clear, this is no sour grapes about Bethea . I think there is a great chance he will fit in extremely well here and could be a turnover doubler for us

Agreed...there will certainly be some veteran CB's out there that will slip through the cracks (like Cox and Wright) that Baalke may kick the tires on. He's already proven he can find talent late in the draft with Morris, Cooper and Brock. He's not done. We pretty much already have our starting 4 right out of the gate with Brock, Culliver, Wright and Morris. We could bring back Cox and Rogers if needed for next to nothing.

And one thing people forget is that this was a pretty good sized pool for FA CB's...ask Brown! And as a result, guess what that means for us? It means many teams that were GOING to pick up a blue-chip CB in the draft, no longer need too. That leaves us with even more ammunition in the draft. Plus whoever we do pick up in the draft is going to have one hell of a time beating out Brock, Culliver, Wright and Morris. And that is EXACTLY what you want coming into the season.

add to this in june we will have a bit extra money due to the rogers salary coming off the books,, that way the team can pick up a wide out or corner if they so desire. that will all depend on what the coaches think of the team after the draft and any mini camp things that are held in may. people act like the season starts tomorrow and if do not sign some big name free agent RIGHT GOD DAMN NOW,, we are all doomed .

A very poignant article, and much of the subject matter crossed my mind the other day when I was beginning to worry about FA departures in the secondary.
Hessian has it right: replenish, deepen, rebuild, and sign your own: in this case, Boldin and Dawson...now there are truly two great signings, altho I don't want to jinx Dawson.

Brodie is spot on with his comment re: Kap's trajectory. I am not sure exactly which one someone was talking about because the trajectories I saw were certainly not uniform, and worse, all over the place. Not a good sign. It is what you would expect from a Qb who is inconsistent under pressure to throw short, medium or long passes. He has to get this right, and if not, Trent will be looking for a new Qb before two yrs are up.

Back to those who don't particular care for our FA: Quote from another earlier thread on our red headed qb, taken #10 overall, way above kap: sign , Restructure, coach up, and trade for two #3s. Nobody could find fault with that, surely. TB or JH or both saw something in Gabbert, or they wouldn't have taken him. If you want inconsistency, well, we now have two Qbs who are. Gabbert all the time, kap under big pressure. Personally I like the idea of restructure, coach up and trade for a pair of #3s.

Why have we been quiet and free agency I think we are planning a big surprise
Many thought Brock made such great strides that he made Brown expendible. Along with that, Rogers appears to have lost a bit and was not worth the cost. They picked up some really fast, potentially good CBs in Wright and Morris last year. If they pick up a high pick CB this year they will have quite a variety of guys to compete for starting positions. It will probably be a depth chart of:

Culliver/Cook/Morris
Brock/Wright/Rookie

This backfield will be young but that does not mean they have to be bad. I really believe speed will make a difference. They will not likely keep more than six CBs (as they did last year) but may pick up another guy or two for competition.

All this from someone, me, who tends to favor vets over youngsters! LOL!

Exactly...and no doubt, we're looking to shift philosophy a bit as well and that probably gets me more excited than anything! No more playing off 15 yards on 3rd and 5.
Hard to believe that is our CB roster...and the first pick in the draft is still 6-8 weeks away from being picked. Who would ever have thunk it? Not I, and that is for certain. But like NC, I am so excited I can hardly wait for the rest of 2014 to get underway.

It's hard to fault the front office, this method of retaining key players and not overspending in free agency has been working. It hasn't resulted in a Super Bowl win yet, but I love that the 49ers are competitive every year. I'd rather see them lose in the playoffs every year than watch other teams in the playoffs while my team was 5-11. I don't want to go back there anytime soon.
dtg, before FA started, I thot we would have to draft at least two CBs, one very high, and still need to get 1 or even 2 more. Now looking at the CBs currently , it looks like we still draft that one very good CB, but he isn't alone. He has help, but I sure hope he is like Reid last yr, and ends up starting by end of TC. What looked like a real problem sure got shored up in a short time.
