You guys are the experts here but this is Baalke's chance to reshape the secondary to his liking, no doubt. And ironically, we'd only be returning to a 49ers old philosophy that Carroll borrowed from us and adopted in Seattle. It sure seems like we're returning to our roots. Is the WCO returning too?
In the SB, SEA played press D, we played back off, let 'em make the catch and then give them a rock 'em sock 'em tackle. Well, not too hard to see whose philosophy worked out best. Also, press D is showing up more and more all over. With our front 7,and then DBs playing press, we should be the D to not want to play against. Last yr it was SEA, and we just rung our hands over all the passes caught, while they played press. In our last game, the pass to Crabs, he was tripled. We never ended up like that on D, but we will this yr.

As for this yrs needs, it is really hard to believe, NC, that a return guy is only thing lacking and not updated. Jeez, we changed the face of our back end D, got more potential WRs(I personally am not sure we didn't already have the guys we needed, but...), and added depth at OL. Wow, without blowing a wad on Revis or his ilk, we just had a sterling FA and DRAFT is still 2 mos off...and we have what? 10 or 9 picks remaining? Who would have guessed that last yr.

One thing bothers tho. And that is I wish jed would get his schidt and TB together and re-_sign you know who. C'mon, the guy has led us to 3 NFCC appearances in 3 yrs when we hadn't gone over .500 in 8 yrs? Do it Jed, do it TB.

Let me close by saying, we still take a red hot CB or WR in rd 1 and may very well move up to 12th or 15th to do it. There will be a starter there. If Trent surprises us all and trades for another move up to get yet another starter, that wouldn't surprise me either. We will get a great CB and WR this draft, hopefully one who can also return punts and KOs. Blazing speed required.

Lots of updates. Fantastic job by the FO signing our own, including the coaching staff!

In fact, all we have left now internally is:
QB Colin Kaepernick - Currently in negotiations fo a LT contract. The Boston Globe and NFL Network have confirmed Matt Maiocco's earlier report that Kaepernick's representatives have set $18M per as the low-point for which these negotiations must begin. Remember, if you do the math, Kaepernick currently is due a base salary of about $1M next season. If he gets the franchise-tag in 2015, and supposing it'll be in the $18M range, the 49ers could get two more years of Kaepernick for less than $20M - or less than $10M per. On the flip side, if the 49ers immediately pay him $18M now (figuring in guarantees fitted to first 3 seasons of any deal), it'd cost about $36M for the same two years AND the 49ers would be locked into him. So Kaepernick and XAM Sports know that he at worst could be looking at a franchise-tag in 2015 and that'll be around $18M. The point? Both he and Harbaugh need to prove it next year that they together, can elevate a 30th ranked offense and they'll get renegotiated next year for long term deals. They, like all HC-QB's, are tied together.
OLB Aldon Smith - Per AB81Rules, he expects the team to pick up his 2015 5th-year option, worth $9.754 million, which doesn't hurt the 2014 salary cap in any way.
CB Perrish Cox - Cox and Rogers are still out there. The 49ers are not expected to retain the right of first refusal with $1.431 million tenders due to their price tags. However, each player still could return to the 49ers for less money as unrestricted free agents.
WR Kassim Osgood - Already talks of bringing back our ST ace from last year.
LG Mike Iupati & Michael Crabtree - The draft and developmental players behind them this year are going to go a long way in determing their futures with us.

Pas, I posted this in another thread and I hope fans don't ignore this.

Before we even consider how many 2014 draftees will make the 53, 46, etc. take a look at all these players who are expected to make huge jumps this year and compete for starting positions (by positions):
Cook, Chris - Will be competing for an outside CB position to back up Culliver/Brock/Wright and will also be a "press" CB which is a shift in philosophy for us
Morris, Darryl - Will be competing with a slot CB in this year's draft for a starting role
Wright, Eric - Already the #3 and will have a full off season to hit the ground running
Dial, Quinton - Already got some field-time last year, will know the defense and can continue to grow under Tomsula this year. Let's watch the growth
Okoye, Lawrence - Expected to make a big jump this off season
Carradine, Tank - High expectations for this man and he's hungry
Jerod-Eddie, Tony - Played very well last year and may even push Dobbs off the roster
Dobbs, Demarcus - Tendered but may not even make the team with our depth!
Debniak, Alex - Was looking like the backup to Miller in the pre season until he got hurt and went on I.R. Watch this one closely! We needed a true backup FB badly last year
Kilgore, Daniel (2nd year/1st-year starter) - Already slated to be out starting C and compete with Looney
Looney, Joe - Played well at RG in spot-duty last year and is expected to make big strides. Iupati, look out
Fleming, Darius (ILB?) - May be looked to move inside but came out of college as a pass rush specialist. And we haven't given up on him yet
Lemonier, Corey - Already a great start last year and will be expected to step up even more this year
Moody, Nick - The FO liked this kid and with Bowman out, he'll be leaned on heavily to step up this off season
Skuta, Dan - Is already our #3 OLB and very good ST and will only get better
Wilhoite, Michael - Played well for Willis and now, we expect him to play great for Bowman
Williams, Ian - Welcome back kid. Now you get to face a starting competitoion with Dorsey and split time with him
Seymour, Ryan - Hearing good things about this guy
Schmidt, Colton (Andy had a poor year last year by his standards) - Will push Andy this year again
Gabbert, Blaine - Will be expected to becoome a viable backup this year
Hampton, Jewel - Love this guy; could surprise everyone while Lattimore gets his playing-game back
Hunter, Kendall - Underused, as always
James, LaMichael - Underused, as always
Lattimore, Marcus - We all have big hopes for Marcus!
Spillman, C.J. - An excellent ST but also may fit the "FS" role well which is important in today's game (vs. the SS role)
Bykowski, Carter - Meh; dude looked horrible last off season and I doubt he'd beat out Marquardt and Martin and Snyder
Marquardt, Luke - Already heard great thisngs about his progress last year
Carrier, Derek - Same here; watch out Celek! We could have our next Delanie Walker
Celek, Garrett - Is gong to have a heck of a time
McDonald, Vance - Coaches already said they plan to incorporate him more into the passing game!
Baldwin, Jon - Is expected to make big strides like Wright with a full off season and some experience in our systems. This is his last shot but will have huge competition thanks to the draft
Patton, Quinton - Man, is this guy hungry or what? Currently the #3 and may be worked into the slot more. If not, he'll have to work hard against a blue-chip X or Z WR

In just about every position, we're 2 and 3-deep already with proven talent and big expected growth in year 2. I don't even know who in this year's draft class is going to crack the 53, let alone the 46 let alone who will get some real playing time and contribute. This draft will most likely focus on "quality" and will be developed for 2015 and 2016 potential starting roles. A CB or WR "may" push the starters in front of them but even if we get 2 blue-chip players in the first round, it's still going to be very very hard to earn a starting spot over Culliver, Brock and Wright and over Boldin, Crabtree and Patton. Are fans getting this?

Pasodoc--agree about the DBs not being aggressive enough at times...though I'm fine with using different styles to throw the D off. Play off for a while and then press when they least expect it. Having faster DBs will help and getting some size in the draft may as well...though the highest rated CB over 6' tall is the ninth best--Desir is 6'1." Dennard and Gilbert are both around 200 pounds so they are solid and more strong than big/tall...either could be a starter.

As for WR, I believe they still need a first rate WR in this WR heavy draft! And they will have a chance to prove they can actually find one! If Crabtree decides to test the FA market next year Baalke will likely let him go. I expect at least two WRs to be chosen in this draft to replace Crabtree and Boldin over the next couple of years...stock the cupboard!

Agree! Let's not gut the STs again!
EXCELLENT POST!!!!!!!!!

This is so much better than the hate, in-your-face and stupid stuff that has seemed to creep into the Zone. THANKS!

Questions:

1). Our coaches must think VERY highly of Fleming to have stuck w/him so far. I healthy where do you see him contributing and at what level? Also, if healthy who in the NFL would you compare him to so I Have a better idea of why we are holding on to him for so long?

2). I also thought Looney played VERY well in spot duty. He reminds me a little of Derrick Deese. Let's say Iupati won't be resigned. How confident are you all in Looney replacing him, would be better in pass protection?

but but but,, that is how we can pay for a high priced big name free agent
I think NC is spot on in this being a Quality draft, not improving our backups, but finding some guys who could actually start. Two positions: obviously WR and CB. My guess is CB first unless someone lets a definite starting WR slip thru to #12-15. But unlike previous yrs where trent traded up or down to get the better backup player, I agree fully with NC that this one is a quality draft. I also think we end up with 2 first rd picks, and our first pick will not be at #30, but at about half that, say #12-15 based on who is on the board. It would be very un Trent like to move up and take a top 5 guy, but again this draft is so strong and deep, that isn't necessary.

Also 4 teams are going to be burning the top 5-8 picks with Qbs who probably should be in 2nd round, but won't be able to wait that long. So 3, maybe 4 of top 8 picks go to undeserving Qbs, for teams like Raids, Jax, jets, jags, who have to have qbs. That effectively makes our #30 pick a #26 pick since 4 teams are going to make bad choices on QBs who are not 1st rd material. Looking at Carr, bridgewater(horrid pro day), Manzel, etc, teams that shouldn't take them in first probably will, which is great for us. So really if Trent wants a CB in the top tier, he has to move up only 11 slots(not 15) to get a #15 pick, due to bad teams taking iffy qBs in rd 1. Hard to know how it plays out but some of the CBs are way better than some of these QB picks. One thing we could do is offer Gabbert and a pick to jump up into top 8 with a team noted above with no Qb. That would be interesting, esp if that is what Trent planned.

Back to NC's point on drafting quality, I just can't see where else Trent is going to improve depth (OL maybe), but like NC, I see Trent /JH picking up a starting CB and WR, which may both be in first rd. We can dangle GAbbert as part of the deal with raids, jax, jets, and jags. I see 2 starters coming from draft for this yr and 2 more for next yr. Plus we will trade some picks again into next yr. Quality, quality, quality. Trent has basically fixed improving backups. Now is the time with a deep draft to get the starters some have been squirrely about. With luck we could even squeeze 5 starters out of this group, giving them a couple yrs to get there.

Those disappointed in FA will be joyous at end of draft, and I am betting on day one as our big day. And yes, that would be switch for trent.
