You do what works. And if conservative works then go with it.
I still think Madden and FF have ruined how people look at a game.
I disagree,If you keep running the ball all the time the other defences around the leage will catch on and play eight men in the box.I dont think other teams are convinced that alex smith can beat them. How can the 49ers exploit any defence when the 49ers cant even convert 3rd downs on a consistant basis.I think that is stupid

How many runs did Frank Gore have that were 10+ yards? That is just as good as a pass. Alex Smith also got sacked 3 times (which seems to be normal for him). If we pass more, he will take more sacks, and the offense may perform even worse (plus he may get injured). I think the playcalling is great.
My only playcalling issues:
1. We have a really hard time converting 3rd and short. I can only hope that Brandon Jacobs can help with this.
2. Slow developing plays seemed rather strange with a penetrating defensive front of the Lions. The 49ers should save those plays for teams that can't pressure the QB.

7 by my count. The Niners would have blown them out by halftime.

Like running up the middle over and over when Detroit was clearly selling out to stop the run, loading the box? I'm totally boggled by some of the play-calling, they came out early and lit Detroit up...and then basically backed off at that point. They took that one deep shot down the field that Davis couldn't hold on to....and then completely stopped. Rather than running into a brick wall, I'd love to see them take some more shots downfield, try playaction some more often, they have way too many weapons on this offense to keep with this overly conservative playcalling.

the dumb trick plays need to stop until we can actually excute them

This. Lions eventually began loading the box up and the 49ers were began having problems moving the ball until Crabtree started making some clutch plays. Teams will start loading up the box and daring the 49ers to beat them through the air and they have to be able to show that they can do that consistently.

Yeah that weird halfback option to Hunter back to Smith to start the 2nd half, that reminded me of some of the goofy trick plays they tried last year, especially against Baltimore.

I agree. I have been less than impressed with the jumbo package so far. Especially on a few short yardage situations tonight, it didn't work. But it did on Gores TD.

The great thing about this 49ers team is that they are talented enough to play whatever game they need to play in order to win. It's not about sexy offensive playcalling, it's about winning the game. When they get into a game where they need to throw a lot more, they'll be able to do it because Smith is comfortable and confident in the offense and he has an array of players to throw to. They're not going to wing it around the field for the heck of it, and why would they unless they have to? "You play to win the game."
Selfishly, I also had thoughts about wanting to see more passing, especially with the way Smith is throwing the ball. There will come a time where they'll have to do it. But I'm very glad that Harbaugh is the coach and not us, because they keep their eyes on the prize - do what you need to do to win this particular game.
2-0!
