I totally agree, it is all about camp competition. One year deals rock outside of core players because they can be cut at the whim of Baalke without a lot of dead money consequences.
The Niners needed first downs and the ability to get into the end zone.
Randy Moss added
Brandon Jacobs added.
Actions speak that the coaches want less of Akers and more TD's.

I do like the concept of raiding role players from the team that just beat you in the championship. We use to do that in the golden era

Yes but it could delay it for a year when some better running backs in the gore mold will be in the draft as compared to this year? since gore is not broken we can put a band aid on it and as many have said, the coaches are not big fans of dixon and here in the second off season is when you see the trash from the previous regime that was tolerated last year taken to the redemption center... spencer,. norris, chilo, dixon
This
i agree. its a good signing. gives the team flexibility.

I kinda feel the same way.
I wanted us to draft a RB.
In absolutely no way does signing a 29 year old running back to a 1 year deal stop us from drafting a RB. First round or otherwise.
Jacobs, like Moss, is not a lock to even make this team.
If it were this signing alone, but if you factor in Gore, Hunter and now the Jacobs signing, drafting a 1st round RB is definitely a luxury that this team (on the verge of a Super Bowl run) might not be able to afford. Not saying it can't or won't happen, but it's not likely (IMO) unless Trent Richardson falls to #30.

I understand with the whole "competition" with Dixon thing, but couldn't we have just drafted a powerback with a little less mileage?
Gore isn't looking too good himself...but we do need someone better via FA and Draft

He woulda gotten us the 2 yards on 2 tries to seal the NFC Championship game. No doubt in my mind. He may even able to punch it in better than Gore from short yardage too.

"Brandon Jacobs is a 49er" if this is still true, after the draft, after any UDFA's come in, and after training camp...I will be surprised. I don't like the player, seems to me he is just an old fat Anthony Dixon with Super Bowl ring. I like the move, and expect more like it, I don't however like the player. I like the move because it shows we are looking to improve, we are looking to create competition in camp, so all in all I'm okay...for now, but I gotta hope we can and will do better than this guy!

Garbage....but it just means we're waiting until next year to draft our RB of the future.....I can dig it.

Exactly.
Another low risk, potentially high reward move for the team. If Jacobs reverts to his old form, he could help us solve our short-yardage and goal-line woes that have lasted for what seems like at least the past 10 years.
More enticing is the likelihood we won't have to see AD's inane tweets anymore.
