The kid has really done better, actually playing well this yr. Sure he had some goofs, but he's young . The more he played the better he got. Chilo on the other hand...well, he had warts( on his hand). Moral: Maybe we might want to let the USC OL guys play 4 yrs before drafting them , and if they come out early, really think it over.

Davis played for Rutgers

I was gonna say, but I figure I read it a few more times before I reply.

Still want him moved to RG. He may be decent at RT, but he can be a perennial Pro Bowl guard.

Why? He has poor instincts outside, poor lateral, and poor COD (change of direction) recovery skills... so he lessens what he can do when he's out in space. He is built for OG duty, and can play more aggressively inside.

That does not mean I (for instance) think he is a bust... sucks... or can't even get a little better at RT. However, he's simply not good at the underlined aspects.

I don't want to start some rookie over Davis at RT. I want to take a legitimate look at Alex Boone to start at RT... with Davis sliding in at RG. That should not be looked at as a demotion. He's still locked in as a starting OL... and I feel it may be best for our team success.

edit: and as much as you think you see while watching these games? I watch them over and over for each player. I know a little bit of what I am talking about here. Doesn't mean it will be done at all... but I think it's worth a look.

Draft Martin when he falls to #30, move Davis to RG.

Do you understand how pass protection works old man? Usually 9 times out of 10 the RB picks up pressure or helps inside. There is no help outside and both end up being blind spots for the QB depending on which side of the field he's throwing too. Where would our tackle come from a draft? You want to put another rookie on the edge??

Of course, I understand well how pass protection works. I also understand that deflecting blame to others will not help our team. I also understand (thanks to the bolded) that your reading comprehension can use improvement.
There is no harm in trying to move players around a bit. The team would have more flexibility and the players would be learning to appreciate the problems inherent in the other positions...within reason. Obviously, you don't put Gore at RT!

Right now the lines strength is at OT, with Boone having a good showing last year. The weakness is at OG and backup C. So trying to strengthen the line, moving Davis to RG and Boone to RT would make sense.

The other alternative of switching T's wouldn't solve the problem in the middle. Davis played RG at a very high level in college so it's not a stretch to imagine him moving inside.

All this becomes moot if Kilgore can lockup the RG position and they find a good backup who can play both G and C.

Davis would do better at right tackle had we not had Chilo Rachal as his wing man, and then snyder.... Snyder was a good fill in but hes no Iupatai.. Iupatai comes in, Staley gets a pro bowl year.

Wow whatever old man I was getting ready for work and glanced over your post. The point is, you know what you have with Davis and our tackles are extremely important in protecting an edge that rarely gets help. Im not trying to get all defensive here, if you think Boone can fill the void so be it but we don't even know if Davis is fit to be a guard. I was an inside linemen for many years and I know the game quite well and I also know there is a HUGE difference between all position on the line including the center. They all have separate responsibilities and a guard has to be able to pull and be a run blocker first. Its not just chipping a 9 technique you have to be explosive to take on a big DT in front of you. The first step is everything, you read a slant wrong an ILB will fill and clean your clock. Don't tell me that just putting a tackle into a guards roll fixes things, there's a lot that has to be learned playbook included.
I do agree Davis is uber athletic and would make an amazing Guard. But then we are back to a RT issue...don't forget Kwame...not a problem I ever want again.
He made BIG improvements from his first year and I'm looking forward to more of the same.

If he doesn't improve THEN you move him

VERY BAD move drafting a Tackle at 30!!!
Who said he does?

of course this is it. if he regressed and showed no improvement from year one to year two you may think about swapping him around but moving him just makes zero sense. He gets better and better the more times he plays this position, why break that pattern and make him start at ground zero? i know people who suggest a swap are thinking about the good of the team but this is not one of the areas to look at. The kid would also benefit from anyone whose named is not chilo playing next to him
I think the point Oldman and others are making is that whoever the five best linemen are should be starting. For instance, if Boone is one of those five, then Davis would probably switch to RG because Boone is probably too tall for RG. No knock on Davis. But let's be clear, he did allow the most sacks last year.
Sadly he was drafted under the Singletary regime. A smart coach would have put a veteran beside him instead of Chilo. He's progressing

Pretty much, this.

Look at it like the young kids do... in Madden, let's say that

RG = Kilgore = 68
RT = Davis = 81

at RG, I truly feel Davis would = 89 and potentially max out in the mid-90's.

I think Boone has shown to be nearly flawless while playing spot OT on both sides. At this moment, I think Boone is.. let's say, a 78.

So, what would everyone prefer?

RG = Kilgore = 68
RT = Davis = 81

or

RG = Davis = 89 with potential to be in the mid-90's quickly
RT = Boone = 78 with potential to be in the mid-90's quickly

Maybe I am just higher on Boone than others... maybe I simply don't think Davis would get much better if left at RT.

It is just an opinion. I didn't start this thread and am not gonna further push some agenda. If we do nothing but upgrade at RG, I'm still happy enough.
I think everybody is overvaluing Boone. The back up always looks good in spot duty but I'm not sure he will hold up consistently. Then you have Davis who is inconsistent at tackle now at guard being inconsistent. I'm just not buying that Davis is going to guard ane boom he's going to be consistent at a position he hasn't played in years?

Perhaps I overvalue Boone but have seen nothing to suggest he won't be a very solid OT in this game. The perception of Boone is unfairly low, in my opinion, because his draft status fell due to personal off-field issues...since remedied.
