and yet some are so willing to throw him in there against number one defenses , thier hatred for alex has blinded them and they could care less what is good for the team.what has the kid ever done to make them think he is ready. i for one am not in favor of giving him the keys,, hoping and wishing that he is ready, very sad

Agree!

Why didn't he go after dalton instead? It would of been easy to trade up 2 more spots to nab him in front of Cincinati. I wanted Dalton instead but if Jim thinks K is better cant wait to see if he is right.

I wanted dalton also, and I think we wanted dalton, and when he got snagged we knew we had to hurry and trade and get CK before he was gone too.

That is exactly my thoughts. Dalton was number #1 QB for the 49ers. It was not a coincidence that they hurried up and traded up to get CK after Dalton was gone.

in preseason though so many defenders were able to read his passes

True, but I don't think that was an issue of release. I think it had more to do with being a rookie QB seeing NFL game speed for the first time and not getting through his progressions fast enough. Keep in mind he had virtually no OTAs and training camp.

The nice thing is that he has a great coaching staff to develop him and time to sit and learn. By the time we need him, he'll be ready.

wow, some are getting unhinged as it becomes clear that alex will resign with the team. we have went from CK needs to unseat alex to we need to sign josh Johnson and now we move to whining about dalton not being drafted.Usually people back seat and second guess after you go through a crappy season. so am i correct in thinking all these people who want either the kid to start, sign josh johnson or we should have gotten dalton think our head coach is an idiot cuz he trusted in alex smith. i think i need some help in trying to figure some things out which are very confusing to me after we came within one game of the super bowl with alex smith

Hard to admit being wrong? Many think of the NFL as a plug and play sport and have no appreciation for just how difficult it is to blend the right players into a winning team. Many also under value experience, coaching, chemistry and any number of other "excuses" given over the years to explain Smith's less than steller play. My mantra, learned the hard way, is don't get rid of a player until a) you have a better replacement or b) they are such a negative factor that even good play doesn't make up for it. Smith has never been a problem nor have they brought in a better QB...so...? WTF!

Reading is fundamental. I never said anything about CK definitely replacing Alex. If you READ properly, pretty much all my posts says CK is an unknown. Also I didn't say anything about wanting Dalton. Once again if you READ properly, I was agreeing with the poster about how the 49ERS jumped on CK immediately after Dalton was picked.

Out of all your jibberish the only correct QB you had correct was Josh Johnson. I say pick him up because he is a vet and he knows Harbaugh's offense and is only QB that would be able to challenge Alex out of CK and Tolzien at this point.

You would think that Alex Smith was related to some of you they way defend like he is the greatest QB of all time, and no QB could ever do a better job than him even though he was benched twice for no names. Harbaugh comes in and makes him a game manager and he is the next Tom Brady in your eyes.

It's always smart to have a backup plan. It's very likely Smith can be Collins or Chandler next season. Why not keep the QB a real competition? Walsh did with Montana with Young and Montana was not even playing bad. If Alex is so good, then there is no worry about a backup.

thank you for your opinion but while it is jibberish i believe the want for a quarterback to compete with someone who has proven himself by leading us to the nfl title game is not as great as the need to improve the wide outs, get younger on the defensive line, upgrade the secondary and find a back like gore whose name is not dixon. i am amused by all this blather about josh johnson and dalton. i will assume blather and jibberish mean the same thing?

i believe the leadership factor is the grreat intangilbe alex brings to the table and that is something that many just simply want to ignore. Josh johnson as an effective leader? please. alex finally found the right system and what he did with no off season and the way he took charge in camp alex was pretty impressive. i understand that may seem like jibberish to some but that is what happened and sad to say there may be some who are either unable or unwilling to see that.

a poster once said, i forgot who it was,, that reading is fundamental. if you would read any of my posts or any alex supporter potss, you will never see anyone who ever said that alex is the greates quarter back of all time. If you took the time to READ properly you would see this. thank you for your time and god bless

No one knows the future obviously, but we'll see about the bolded. I think Smith will put together at least one more good year, and two if Colin isn't ready in 2013.

alex has improved his qb rating each year despite subpar talent around him and even worse coaching

i see no reason he will make an exponential jump (about 100 qbr of the season) after a whole offseason in the system and upgrades at WR

I agree Alex is our best option right now but to say he performed better each year with subpar talent around him is false. That talent around him was also a part of the 14 wins. We dont if the talent was subpar due to Alex or if Alex isnt getting the stats due to the talent.

Im sure it is a combination of Alex not being as good as you think he is and key injurie sat the WR spots.

Agree and I think many see leadership only if Ray Lewis is yelling. Smith is an understated guy and isn't naturally prone to demonstrative language...but he does lead by example and now, with a HC who supports him unequivocally, he has stepped up to be more vocal.

He has found the right system! Few people have considered his very efficient play in college as it relates to Harbaugh's system. He fits like a glove. CK, for all his talent, does not. He will have a much steeper learning curve, starting from a much more raw state, to master Harbaugh's system.

This. But the defense was a pivotal component of the 49er's success. Even with the numerous 3 and outs and red zone sputters the Defense kept the 49ers in the game by not letting the opposing offense get a huge lead. Not to mention creating alot of short fields with the turnovers to give us opportunities to score our 3 points most of the time. They had most forced turnovers in the league and broke a record that was in effect since 1920 with not allowing a rushing TD in 15 games.

So without this dominant defense, they would be no 13-3 record possibly no playoffs with 17TDs and 5 Ints with the numerous 3 and outs and redzone sputter. But that point will always get over looked. I'm just going to ignore the posters that love Alex and do not look at the whole picture of our season.

This thread is rapidly going the way of the Alex Smith thread. Be a little nicer to each other and stop trying to inflame.
