Nolan drafted Smith, Gore, Davis, Willis, Walker etc. Dude blew sucked major balls as a coach, but we got to respect his job in the draft.

He had 4 drafts here. What the hell kind of team goes 4 drafts in a row without hitting on a few good players? Naming some of the good picks we had doesn't really signify much. Name any team and any 4 year stretch, and I bet I can name several good players they drafted. For example, even the Lions, who only won 15 games in the 4 year stretch between '07 and '10 drafted Suh, Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Delmas, Avril, Pettigrew, etc. The Rams over that same 4 year stretch won only 13 games. But they drafted Bradford, Saffold, Laurinaitis, Long, etc. How 'bout the Cards from '03-'05? Only 15 wins, but they drafted Boldin, Fitzgerald, Dansby, Dockett, Rolle, etc. I think you get the point. Even if monkeys were doing the drafting, you don't go 4 years in a row without getting some good players.

Draft great talent then do everything to ruin it. Respect no, he don't deserve no respect.
Nolan failed at getting an OC that would commit a few years in SF. I always took nolan as a guy who would let the OC have full reign of the offense. The same troubles that led to Alex having a hard time can also be said about nolan. The defense was decent under nolan. And Nolan did have decent drafts.

Nolan's big failure was his selection of the OCs. This is why I hate norv turner so much. Norv got greedy and deserves to be fired in SD.

**I was never a fan of Nolan's version of the 3-4. Vic F is 10x the DC than Nolan is.

The 49ers before him. Compare his drafts to the ones before him. If I remember, we drafted Kwame Harris, Rashaun Woods, Mike Rumph etc. in the 1st round.

good answer. we could have had Vince Wilfork. I remember being shocked when Donahue passed him up, twice, if I'm not wrong.

Ok, in the 4 drafts before him, we drafted Andre Carter, Barlow (who WAS good for a while), Eric Johnson, Heitmann, Lloyd (granted, he didn't do as much for us, but did lead the entire NFL in receiving last year which does mean something), Smiley, Spencer, Sopoaga, and Andy Lee. And by the way, ya Rumph was absolutely awful his rookie year, but very decent his 2nd year and was looking to develop into something promising before injuries unraveled his career in his 3rd year. And most of Nolan's good picks, such as Davis and Willis, were high picks, and it doesn't take as much talent to draft good players with your high picks. In the 4 years before him, we did have some gems in the later rounds. Neither Donahue nor Nolan were great, but cherrypicking a few draft picks that were good or bad does nothing to prove an argument. Every team drafts some good and some bad players with their picks over a 4 year span.

I actually don't think that was a particularly terrible decision. Granted, it didn't work out, but hindsight is always 20/20. Rashaun Woods WAS supposed to be a really, really good receiver and he was certainly very polished. It's not like we reached for him. And there were concerns about Wilfork's weight and motor at the time. And we also wound up with Shawntae Spencer too by trading down. Again, I know it didn't work out, but I can't say that at the time there wasn't any reasonable logic behind the move.

It's like saying that Chargers management blew it by taking Ryan Leaf. Of course it was an epic fail, but absolutely anyone else would have taken Leaf too.

Carter made the probowl this year... think it's his first time.

Ya but he was really good for us in his first few years. Then he had those bulging disc issues and then put out of position at OLB when Nolan took over in '05. After he moved on to the Redskins, he had a couple double digit sack seasons for them before putting together an outstanding, pro bowl year this season.
