What does the team do with Alex Smith after this season?

If you think Harbaugh is a straight shooter, and no one has ever suggested he is not, his words indicate Smith will get a decent to good contract at the end of the year. CK has played four snaps this year...enough said.

Harbaugh likes Josh Johnson and has said that he is the most talented QB he has ever coached. So he may want to bring him in as a FA. Good, the team needs another good QB.

I really believe in incentive laden contracts. If Smith plays well in the second half of the season, something he has done the last two seasons, they should give him a good contract with numerous escalators for performance starting with easy to reach (playing most games), and going up to probowl, playoff incentives.

Tought all the nonsense about letting Smith walk so we can rely on a totally unknown rookie or second year player would stop by now but guess I overestimated the anti Smith sentiment of some.

This.

are you the coach or general manager of the team?

Could you expand on that by listing the starting QB for next year? Likely FAs or CK?

To answer LionHeartofGold: Smith has been called upon to win games THIS YEAR. He's answered the call. Throughout his career the one area Smith has been good at his getting the ball into the endzone when inside the 20 so he's shown clutchness as well.

And he doesn't turn it over inside the 20 which makes him a good QB. Turnovers there kill you.

So you don't believe that Harbaugh can develop quarterbacks? Ok we will have to agree to differ on that.

As for saying you are ok with keeping him for another year, after this year why should he accept a one year contract?

And incidentally, it is very easy to say you want to dump him when you don't have to come up with a replacement. Kaep has proved nothing and is very probably simply not ready for the NFL yet. No guarantee he will necessarily ever he starting material. But we will need a quarterback.
I can't wait to see what Alex and this offense can accomplish next year with an entire offseason to prepare. Gonna be great stuff, everyone.

Ideally, a 3 year contract structured like this would be offered and accepted...

2012 - 5 mil base / 7 mil SB

2013 - 6 mil base / 5 mil SB

2014 - 7 mil base / 3 mil SB

total = 3 years / 33 mil / 15 guaranteed (maybe have some extra playoff incentives built in)

This would give the Niners fair protection if they wanted to go in another direction in 2-3 years, and would give Alex some freedom while also the potential for yet another big contract around age 30 if he excels.

I'm no expert on contracts, so I don't really know if this is a plausible scenario.

The scenario and #'s look pretty reasonable to me on both ends.

Alex is probably looking at $10 + million per year. And a 3 year deal. Like you said. And that gives him a chance to finally have 2 years in a system with Harbaugh who he really likes. And it gives the 49ers cover for 3 more years to figure something out. I'm not sold on Kaep at all. He bangs into the RB's while trying to hand off. Obviously he's not ready. It will take 2 more years for him at least. If he ever turns out. A brand new rookie somewhere in the draft will take 2 - 3 years. We may not draft anybody at all. The top tier FA's won't be available to us at QB.

So it comes back to Alex again I think. The good news is he has played by far the best football of his career. And he hasn't hit his upside yet. He didn't even have a full offseason or 2 years in the system yet.

Sounds good to me but it's not my money! Unless they can sign Brady or Rodgers...
No question about it Re-Sign him even Kap turns to be better than i think he is then we got 2 good QB's trade one for some draft picks... this is a not even in question.. if the franchise was gonna let him walk they would have did it before this season when it would have been a easy choice. Not sold on Kapernick !

Dont worry about Sus. He would rather we played without a quarterback than admit Alex can play.
