Who would you rather have, Willis or Megatron ??

How is this even a question? The debate whether NFL GMs believe WR or MLB is a more important position is easily settled by looking at virtually any draft year. It's not a knock on Willis to say you'd take Johnson over him.

Next thing you know, someone will ask "Willis or Rodgers" and zoners will pick Willis because "he made 18 tackles by himself and an elite QB needs weapons to make plays!!!!!"

Yeah...thats what I said. QB is in another catagory completely.

I stand by what I said. A great MLB is just as important as a great WR. Its just not as flashy.

Do the Bears with a SB without Singletary? To the Ravens win without Lewis?

Its not a knock on Willis to say I'd prefer Johnson...I just DON'T. Its also OK to like the guy you have an not drool over a player on another team. The grass is always greener. CJ is among the best in the NFL, but he hasn't been to the Pro Bowl 4 times in 4 years and isn't a 3 time All-Pro.

I don't see this as a grass is greener conversation. You're right that QB is another category, but that's my point: so is WR. Of the three positions, the hierarchy goes QB --> WR --> MLB. I don't think anyone can really dispute that.

Receivers are important, but not more important than impact defenders, no matter what position they play.

This.

pssssht alex smith being best ever?! I think Tim Rattay would have something to say about that!
But really, it's a toss up for me and I'm as big a P-Willy homer as you guys! Both are rare talents at their chosen position, but if I had to pick one it would be Patrick because I feel that in order for Calvin to be at his best he needs a gunslinger, such as Stafford... Patrick on the other hand needs himself, and is literally the center of that defense... He is everywhere...... And beside that, can Calvin Johnson say he single handedly dominate Adrian Peterson?? No, but Patrick can!
Good post, Marvin. It actually brought me close to 50/50 on this one. Not afraid to admit when someone else has a point.

OK...I'm pretty impressed. ;-)

99% of the 'zone wouldn't say that. All I wanted was the 50/50. I prefer Willis, but CJ is a damn good player. Its not a slam dunk.

I just wanted to make the statement that it wasn't automatically Calvin just because of the position he plays.

Yes, you are. You just don't realize it.

I'd probably pick Willis as well, because I'm biased.

If we had Megatron and Willis was on the Lions, most here would be picking Megatron. There's a pretty good chance most fans of other teams - those who truly are not biased - would pick Megatron as well. It is what it is.

Megatron has scored more points then Willis has made tackles

Megatron has converted more first downs then Willis has made 3rd down stops.

Willis might not even be the best linebacker on his team right now.

I disagee with you about Willis not being the best LB on his own team. When teams are making there offensive plans for the week they specifically are planning around Willis and Justin Smith. Now that Bowman is developing and Aldon Smith is having an impact this is now forcing teams to plan diffrently and what do you know Willis gets 18 tackles last week.

Iam Bias toward defense so for me I will take Willis over Johnson. While Johnson may have a single year where he get 18-20 TD's my question is how many TD's does Willis prevent and or help create due to a fumble or interception?

agreed it!
Willis
Again, only guys in the NFL I'd consider taking before Willis if I were starting a team are Brady, Rodgers, and Brees.

That is simple....how many tackles does he make were he was the only guy that could?

Not to many.....

Functional middle linebackers are less valuable then functional passrushers and cover corners. A tackle sponge with out a passrushers and coverage in the secondary is a loosing defense.

I love Willis , am glad the 49ers have him.....but I would trade him for a wr that could make Shaun hill look like Dan Marino....
Willis and here is why. Willis was able at LB to come in and have imediate success on a lousy team. 4 Pro Bowls, 3 All Pro. Megatron had to wait at WR for the right coach, QB and O-Line to have the same type of success. He is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential.

I believe Crabtree could have 1500 yards on the Detroit offense, and doubt Megatron would have 9 TDs on our 9ers....
Elite WRs are less important to their team, they don't touch the ball even 25% of the time, but an elite MLB takes away the middle of the field from the opposing offense on every play. How many Super Bowl wins do Owens and Randy Moss have? Moss was in a Super Bowl with the Pats, but he was hardly the reason they got there.Jerry Rice tore his ACL in 97 but we still went 13-3.

You build your franchise around the quarterback, you build a dynasty around your defense. You can get by without an elite receiver, because a great QB and scheme can spread the ball around.
