Being roughly 1/3 of the way through this season what should we be looking to extend..

From KFFL.com

QB Alex Smith UFA (maybe 3 year deal)
FB Moran Norris UFA
WR Braylon Edwards UFA (think he will want too much money)
OT Adam Snyder UFA (yes team drafted 2 guys but his versatility makes him too valuable at the right amount)
OT Joe Staley UFA (listed as a UFA but actually signed extension through 2017)
LB Ahmad Brooks UFA
CB Carlos Rogers UFA
FS Dashon Goldson UFA (would like to see him resigned but I think he wants too much money)
FS Madieu Williams UFA
OG Chilo Rachal UFA
WR Josh Morgan UFA (wont happen until after season)
Goldson and Rogers.

Wait to do Alex and Morgans until the end of the year
I have a feeling Harbaugh is going to wait on some of these until he gets a chance to also review outside talent that he thinks would fit better. He hasn't really had a chance to put his fingerprint on the personnel yet.

Its only been 5 games, let the year play out and then worry about extending anyone.

exactly, why box yourself in when u could maybe add a better player in the offseason via FA, trade or even the draft
Agree to wait for sure, but also want to say that "edwards will want too much money"?? How is that determined? He hasn't even really played yet.

OG Chilo Rachal UFA - i think we can ALL agree on what to do with this #2 pick that was drafted ahead of Desean Jackson!

I think Brooks is the most obvious and likely to get an extension during the season.

Carlos Rogers is a guy that we MUST extend and give him a decent amount of money. We need a CB of his caliber on the team for a while. I'd say 4-5 years.

I would like to have Braylon Edwards extended as well. I think Crabtree and Edwards could be a potent combo. But since we haven't even seen that combo on the field yet, we should wait till the end of the season. If Braylon develops chemistry with Alex and proves to be a reliable threat then I see no reason why we shouldn't give him a 3-4 year extension.

Unfortunatly for Josh Morgan, he probably wont get extended if we extend Edwards. And Edwards will have much more time to prove his value on the field than Morgan. The only thing that might keep Morgan around is if Edwards demands too much money, or if Morgan is willing to play for a #3 WR type of contract.

Alex Smith can wait till the end of the season. If he does well we will want to keep him and he wont want to go anywhere. His family is settled in SF and he likes Harbaugh. He will only leave if staying isn't an option.

Adam Snyder should be resigned, but only for good backup money. He has reached his max potential and the best he can do is be a quality backup. So I wouldn't resign him for more than what he is worth.
If,I was just to pick one so far I go with Carlos Rogers.
p.s. Forgot about Goldson... he will likely be offered an extension, but we wont be able to retain Carlos Rodgers and pay Goldson big money. Rodgers will be the priority and Goldson will only return if he will accept a very modest contract.

The only player I'd want to extend right this minute is Rogers. he is playing extremely well and generally has in the past, plays a premium position, a position of need for us, and is in his prime. Also his price goes up with every good game. The rest of the guys I still want to evaluate over the course of a season.
Definitely would like to see us extend Rogers. He has been quite possibly the best CB in the game so far this year. But I'd only wanna give him maybe like a 3 year deal. After all, he is 30 and that is pretty old for a corner.
Listed in order of pritority -

1. A.Smith - How much credit should Harbaugh get for Alex's success? I'm not sure Harbaugh couldn't get similar results with Kaep/Johnson/Tolzien. With that said, I dont really want to chance it. I think the current staff has proven they know what they are doing. I'm ok with whatever decision they make in the offseason.
2. Rogers - Lockdown CBs are overrated and overpaid. No reason we can't win SBs with Rogers on one side.
3. Brooks - Always around the ball, doesn't give up big plays.
4. Morgan - Wow, what a difference a coach makes. The guy is build to run the WCO. Smith loves him and so do I. Here is another example of our old inept coaching staff not knowing how to use the talent they had.
5. Goldson - I love his big hits and no one has gotten behind him this year. However, I need to see some INTs because I know he's going to ask for a lot of cheddar.
6. Snyder - Vet, versitale lineman. Need I say more?

Rather than contract extensions, perhaps a more appropriate topic to consider, while in-season, is the possibility of a trade for a future pick. In particular, look at the OL. Beat writers have documented that other teams approached the Niners, earlier this year, sounding out trade possibilities within its young OL. The tremendous improvement of the OL performance, when Snyder replaced Rachal, as the starting RG, suggests that Rachal might not be in the long-term picture for the Niner OL. If Kilgore and/or Person, talented picks currently lingering in the no-mans-land of the 6 Inactives on the 53-man roster, or promising PS players like Beeler, move ahead of Rachal, in the coaches' eyes, then maybe Rachal becomes in-season trade bait, especially as teams have their OL thinned-out by injury during this season, creating immediate, unexpected demand.

If you had confidence in Kilgore or Person or Beeler, would you accept a trade offer of a 3rd, or even a 4th round pick for Rachal, before season-end? Would you quietly shop Rachal for such compensation? Based on what this fan has observed, I would. Not hating on Rachal. Seems like a hard worker, but just doesn't seem to fit with what the club wants from its offensive linemen. Maybe he would flourish in another offensive system. Would prefer to salvage something from the original 2nd round pick, than just have to cut Rachal next summer and get nothing.

Why would Alex take a 3 year deal? He'll get a 5 year deal. He's in position to ask for long term security.
