Can't believe this is how Alex and co. were coached last year...

If last week had been a loss, even a close one - say the Eagles kick a gaming winning FG on the last drive, everyone would be complaining (with good reason) about the play calling and lack of game plan that we witnessed in the first 1/2. Instead, it's a win and JH is "brilliant", an "offensive genius", etc.

I just want a win were we go ahead early and never look back. Actually, I think I'd settle for a good old fashioned shootout - just to instill some confidence not only in our O but confidence that us fans have in our O.

It's very encouraging that we have had leads in all but the Eagles game. So the offense is capable of starting out fast. I think the last two games on the road, like most teams we tend to be more conservative start. This home game against the Bucs, I expect them to start out fast again.

Breaking off routes is more Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison type stuff. Alex and co. were nowhere near that last year!

Exactly. Plus lets be honest...it's not really Alex's forte or what he's "built" to do. It's like Urban Meyer said...Alex has to know EVERYTHING that's going on before he's essentially pulls the trigger. Is that ideal? Maybe not but it is what it is. What we have right now is better suited for Alex. Having these young guys who have ALL (not just Alex) had offensive turnover "guess" what the other is doing based on ONE off season of chemistry building is just plain retarded. No wonder there were so many picks at the beginning of the season (Alex had no idea what his WRs were doing and vice-a-versa) and less later on (they became familiar with one another). Either way..the growing pains make sense.

Lets tell the truth here and knock off the pointless Shanny nuthugging and self congratulations. There was no reason to believe Sing would not have been successful at that time. There was nothing to really indicate he would have been a failure at that time. There was also no reason to believe that Shanny would have been successful either. His team was in complete and utter shambles, and hadn't produced anything of significance in a long, long, long time. In fact, all indications were that Shanny's run as a HC was well past his prime.

Uhh there was plenty to indicate that he would suck. He got rid of Martz and brought in Mr Sleepy to run the offense. He hada cave man approach to an evolving passing league. At least Shanny would have brought some actual football knowledge.
I like Shanahan to come to the Niners too. But know that I think about it he doesn't have the qb development that Harbaugh does. Outside of Elway Shanahan couldn't get it done with Jake Plummer, Cutler, and McNabb. He's really good when it comes to offenses though.

I always thought this was like a Mike Martz or Peyton Manning thing where there are option routes built into a play call like if the WR is originally supposed to a run a curl but the DB is up on him and it automatically switches to a 9.

Yes - but very few can do it. Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne run 10,000 routes every offseason and can pull it off.

The reason why this is hilarious was because the coaches KNEW Smith hadn't developed a rapport with his receivers. Probably the only person who could pull this off successfully was Vernon Davis - and when defenses decided to take him out of games, there goes the passing offense.

Again, Singletary had no clue as to what was going on and Raye should have known this type of approach only works with practice. I guess it develops over time, but certainly not with an OL that is not good a pass blocking. You can't have effective rapport until your OL blocks to give the QB and WRs reps to be able to run this successfully. Pushing two rookies and keeping Rachal on a line doomed this approach from the beginning. It never had a chance.

Yes. I see something developing between Smith and Josh Morgan right now.

Griese and Plummer put up some great numbers in Denver, but the defense was terrible.

Johnson didn't design the offense. He only made a few changes in plays after he took over. He still ran Raye's playbook, although he did it much better.

You forgot Steve Young, lol. I guess you meant as a HC...

yes true. but it takes a few years to develop that kind of chemistry.

I know this may be somewhat immature to bring this up, but I, along with many many others here have been saying this for the past 3-4 years, and now that it seems to be happening; it like "hey read this breaking news"!!?? Sorry my friends me and my Alexsexualness have known about this for a while... .. .

There have always been two factors going on here hurting the 49ers offense for the last several years - bad coaching, and a QB that was overhyped in the draft who should have started his career as a backup.

I am not saying this to rip Smith, but rather to say it isn't black & white one side bad, one side good as the typical extremist arguments that repeat indefinately here.

The reality was the worst possible situation - a QB that would have struggled for a while as starter on even a stable team with good coaches & players, but ending up on a team without that support.
