The San Francisco 49ers are a stunning 3-1, sitting all alone in first place in the NFC West. Down 20 points on the road in Philadelphia against the big, bad Eagles, the less-talented Niners roared all the way back.

They were calm. They were poised. They were well-coached.

They are the exact opposite of what they were under Mike Singletary.

Jim Harbaugh has truly saved this franchise; he's the absolute right guy at the right time.

Remember the chaos under Singletary? Pick a quote. My favorite was his epic search for a rat. Then there was the "dad-gum" Yahoo report. And of course, "can't coach em" followed by "I want winners." It was great for the media. But it was awful for the players and fans. Singletary was a punch-line, a laughingstock, becoming a cartoon character. He had no idea how to be the face of a franchise. His sideline demeanor was poor. His clock management was pathetic. Mike Singletary was the worst coach in the NFL since Rich Kotite left the scene.

I took this trip down memory lane watching the Niners come back on Sunday afternoon. The Niners looked so professional in the second half. They would've never won this game under Singletary.

Factoring in location, opponent and scoreboard, I would argue that Alex Smith played the best game of his San Francisco career against the Eagles. Smith proved to be a stabilizing factor, rocking steady for 201 yards on 13-of-17 passing in the second half. He tossed touchdowns to Vernon Davis and Josh Morgan. It was beautiful. Finally, Smith, so maligned since being the top pick in the draft, had his moment.

Catching up with Smith Monday on the SiriusXM Blitz, the quarterback didn't name Singletary. But his take on the mentality for the second half spoke volumes about the difference between Harbaugh and Singletary. Smith told us, "It starts from the top down. Nobody was freaking out at the half. There were no crazy emotions. There was no hoopla. The focus was on the details. It was about stringing plays together and starting from there. There was no crazy speech. It was just football."

You mean Harbaugh didn't pull his pants down like Singletary did a few years ago? This is a change for the better.

And Harbaugh's demeanor and toughness and demand for accountability carried over to the field. The offensive line was incredible against the Eagles vaunted defensive line. Frank Gore churned out key, clock-killing drives and huge first downs.

And what Harbaugh has done with Alex Smith has been nothing short of remarkable. Yet, if you have been following Harbaugh's career, his meteoric rise as a coach, it's not surprising. Smith is thrilled to be working with the former NFL quarterback. After Smith had to deal with constant change at the offensive coordinator position and the irrational behavior of Singletary, Harbaugh has saved his career. It's easy to blame Smith for underachieving. He throws the passes. But for years, until Harbaugh arrived, Alex Smith was set up to fail.

In 2011, he has thrown one pick in four games. Let that sink in.

Harbaugh and Smith are attached at the hip. Finally, Alex has his man.

Smith explained, "He knows what it is like. He knows you have to throw the ball away. He has a wealth of knowledge. We are constantly talking football. In past years, I was forcing it. I was trying to do too much and be something I'm not. He wants me to run the offense."

Imagine that concept.

Look, I don't think the 49ers are a great team. But Harbaugh has changed the culture in San Fran. They could easily win the division by default. And they are a fourth-quarter against Dallas away from being undefeated.

Here's the beauty for Niners fans. Harbaugh is building something. They will get better players next year when they have a full offseason program.
And wait until he has a long period of time to work with Smith.

Finally, after years of being mocked by football fans and David Letterman, the Niners are legit, because they finally have direction.

They finally have a head coach.

I don't get posts like these. We are all FANS of the Niners... so shouldn't we get excited when we win and a bit sad when we lose? I don't see everyone running out and buying their custom-made Superbowl rings just yet. Most of us are adults and have a built in mechanism that tempers our expectations. So why not continue to show optimism when things are going well? Again... we are fans.
Keyword is MOST. Most of the guys that really still hate Smith are the ones that could not manage their expectations.

Right... true that. I swear some posters really sound unhappy that we are 3-1 and looking pretty decent. As if they really wanted us to fail for whatever reason.

NOT talking about you, AXl49, as I don't honestly remember your post history.

Most of said posters don't want to admit what the rest of us thought all along. That this teams woes in recent years have been primarily due to failures in coaching, not Alex Smith.

lol STFU

Our Harbaugh, who art in the field, Hallowed be thy playbook. Thy field goals come, Thy touchdown will be done, On the field as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily kickoff. And forgive us our penalties, As we forgive those who score against us.
And lead us not into false starts, But deliver us from interceptions. For thine is the game, the power and the glory.
Amen

"no crazy emotions" Like Singletary chewing them out? HS football style? MAN I am SOOOO GLAD I can laugh about that goof now. I bet Alex HATED him.

Sing was a first time HC with the job offered to him, Never been a DC...his only experience was a position coach....loved the guy but he was already too far ahead of himself.

Give Sing a break !

Yea, there was a lot more wrong with this team last year than sing, I dont think he was a horrible coach just not qualified. Emotional coaches work well when there is a cant miss system in place and all the players need is motivation. Sings problem was that he didnt have that system (on either side of the ball) and had no idea how to install one or motivate his players to execute certain aspects of the game. yelling at your players to just play harder or give more effort might work in high school ball, but in the NFL you gotta know all the ins and out's and little things that make teams successful. Emotional antics get old with players if when systems arent working. I think the sentence that most sums up the difference between Sing and JH was when Alex said "he understands that sometimes you have to throw the ball away" meaning that he understands the qb position and running an offense as a whole. If that was our problem last year, Sing sure as hell wasnt the coach to fix it.

Disagree about Singletary being a capable coach in any situation. Being a rah rah motivator is a small part of being a HC. Time management, people management, keeping the assistants focused and going in the same direction...Saying Singletary could do it just by motivating is an insult to every HC who worked his way to the position.

That said, my comment is about Singletary as a HC, not a person. He may be a great guy, wonderful father, husband, uncle...whatever. Alex Smith needed someone to help him, not yell in his face.

I agree with you but I dissagree about the situation, singletary has proven to be an effective postion coach, but could he design a defense??? I doubt it, if you are not capable of of designing an offense or a defense then you probably are not capable of being a head coach. I agreed with you but not once in that paragraph did I say that he can do it just by motivation, if anything I outlined that point for you by saying he couldnt install a system. But he has obviously proven he can be an effective assistant or position coach, he got a job almost immediatley after he was fired, so there is one Situation where he has proven capapble
"I dont think he was a horrible coach just not qualified. Emotional coaches work well when there is a cant miss system in place and all the players need is motivation."

Didn't mean to misunderstand but the above seemed to imply that with a ready built team he could take over and motivate them to victory. I think the 9ers management thought the same thing so it wasn't far fetched to think you might. He was a perfect guy to be an assistant to the head coach but not an assistant head coach, which got him in the door to be HC.

Some coaches bring in people like Singletary to talk to there teams, and I believe he actually had done this, to motivate. But day in and day out this type of motivation gets old fast. Also not sure he proved himself as an assistant HC. He was one of two LB coaches under Nolan and his job as Assistant HC was not defined. Hard to believe he couldn't teach a postion he mastered and excelled in but not everyone is cut out to be a coach or teacher...so don't know for sure.
Some Coordinators can make the transition to HC -- Mooch and Seifert are good examples

Some can't -- Nowin

Some coaches are good as position coaches and nothing else -- Sing. Great LB coach. Horrible HC. He'd also be a horrible DC.
Coordinators are schemers, manipulators, guys that sweat the minutae

It's been said that Sing left at a decent hour to be with his family. While honorable, does not a HC make

I doubt Harbaugh is a 9 to 5 er

Walsh was also a workaholic.

Harbaugh is a great glue guy and has brought in competent coordinators. While Manusky was competent, Jimmy Raye might have been cool when bell bottoms and butterfly collars were around, but he had been so far passed by the times that it aint even funny. Martz wanted JTO to win the QB duel and put his fingers on the scales.

Harbaugh has shown that he wanted Alex from the get go. Gave him the playbook when he wasn't even on the team. Pumped him up. Showed him support, didn't back stab him or throw him under the bus ala Nowin. Gave him a hug . Now, that faith is paying off. That, my friends, is good coaching and good people management.
