His passing percentage is a misconception. I agree that Alex played "well enough" today (specifically in the 2nd half), but most of his passing yards are not positive for the team. Completing a 3rd down pass for 4 yards when 8 are required doesnt equate to good QB play. The team was 5-15 in third downs, with Alex only completing 2 PASSES on third down for first down conversions. Everyone likes to tout that Alex had great stats, but you have to see the entire picture to apply those stats. Yes, our line sucks. There's no mystery there. But Alex hasnt really done anything to make matters any different, and I think it's safe to say that teams are willing to blitz the entire defense knowing that Alex wont punish them for it.

If you guys want to compare Alex's 20/30 200 yard passing day to what he would have accomplished 3-4 years ago (most likely 16/23 169 yards whioch isnt much different), then enjoy. But our offense sucks, and although our line is doing a lot of damage to our cause, Alex hasnt really done anything that demonstrates he can put the team on his shoulder when needed.

The QB's job is to get the ball out. If he looks down field and doesn't see it, it's better to get the ball into the hands of a playmaker and have him make somebody miss. It's significantly better than taking the sack or throwing it away or scrambling for a few.

Some of your expectations are insane (not directed at quoted poster). In a 3rd and long situation, don't you think the D is looking for somebody to just get those 9 yards and call coverage accordingly. This isn't Madden. Nobody's going to play man in a 3rd and long. That's why 3rd and longs are so hard to convert.

You hear it ALL the time. Take what the defense gives you.... take what they give you. That's what he did and is doing.

great post, and glad it's coming from someone other than me....

Offensive line: F+. They get the plus because they gave Alex Smith, Kendall Hunter, and Greg Roman enough time to pull off their fourth quarter comeback drive. Besides that, this game was an embarrassment for Mike Solari and Tim Drevno's group. They allowed five sacks, and assisted Gore and Hunter to a measly 70 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Joe Staley gave up two sacks and played a terrible game. Anthony Davis gave up one sack but got beaten many more times. Chilo Rachal had two holding penalties, two false starts, he gave up a sack and got benched. He should remain on the bench. Jonathan Goodwin got pushed back into the pocket all day long. Trent Baalke should have made it a higher priority to resign center David Baas, because Goodwin is playing very poorly for the Niners. The only member of this line who's holding his own right now is Mike Iupati, and he gave up a sack today, too. Both guards are too slow to pull. The unit cannot pick up a blitz. They can't even set up a screen pass. The Niners would be a much better team if they had drafted offensive lineman more wisely. It's tough to figure how any NFL team can win games consistently with this offensive line.

what exactly do you expect any QB to do with that s**t^^^^^^

yeah, the o-line, which is full of first and second rounders and a high priced free agent, isn't doing their job, I agree. Solari is one of those coaches where everyone says he's one of the best but he just hasn't done anything for us in his tenure. These aren't really WCO type Olinemen though, I wonder if that is the problem. The WCO looks for smaller linemen that can pull, but Nolan drafted big huge linemen that could takeup space. Not sure how much of the problem, if any, is due to that.

So is it the hitch or the "hop hop" that's the problem or is it having a DL barreling down on you before you can even set your feet to make the pass?

Or is it that you still get the pass off, but it's kind of low, and Michael Crabtree butterfingers it?

He missed 10 throws today....five of them were blatant drops by his receivers:

1. Crabtree (2)...one of them a perfect slant
2. Davis - no hands whatsoever
3. Morgan - if the pass hits you on the hands, you should be able to make the catch.
4. Gore - tried to use his facemask to make the catch.

Alex's mechanics and footwork are not perfect, and certainly not optimal for the WCO, which is all about footwork. Maybe bring in Steve Young to work with all the QBs?

That being said, while his footwork isn't great, by biggest complaint which his is where he looks for his open receivers. He always looks for the easy throw, rarely looks down field, and is too risk averse. He's been mentally damaged by all the horrible coaches we've had over his career here.

He basically had two decent OCs while he was here: Turner and Martz (McCarthy was okay, but that first year was a disaster).

If you acknowledge that the OL is that big of an issue then why argue against Alex when the troubles are way beyond his control? I wouldn't want Luck right now because we would end his career before it started. We cant run and we don't have the time to pass deep, Alex is handicapped pretty bad right now so his performance given the circumstances is pretty good (especially for him).

I think most NFL QBs could do much more with the same circumstances. It's not really productive discussing that in this forum though.

Tell me 1 QB who has a new system, no running game, horrible OL, injured WR's, loads of offensive penalties, and is playing good and winning right now?

I can't duplicate the circumstances, because you will want an *exact* match, and that never exists for any team. I can say that Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, and Matt Ryan all went to the worst teams in the league (way worse than we are now) and performed very well straight out of the chute, each of them showing more promise in their rookie year than Smith does in year 7. I suspect that pretty soon you can add Andy Dalton to this list as well.

Your question is absurd. There is no similar situation in the NFL to any team right now. Every team is different, every situation is different. You are trying to compare apples to oranges.

Bradford is a good comparison. New system and loads of injuries and he cant get a win. He's just over 200 yards avg per game and his comp % is a bit over 50. He was supposed to be the next great QB and is having similar issues to "early" Alex, imagine if he gets another OC next year.

The Niners arent the only team that face these situations. Other teams do it as well. And yes, I know those teams have either (A) better lineman, (B) better playmakers, or (C) better playcalling, but unless you're the Patriots, you dont have all 3 to your advantage. The difference is that Alex has done minimal to help the cause, and although I agree that (A)(B) and (C) can all be applied to the circumstances that he's put in, I find it hard pressed that he has faced those obstacles everytime in every game. There's something lacking from him as well, and whether we want to admit it or not, it's been apparent throughout his career, and that includes when he had decent olines, a running game, good coaching etc. He's just to hesitant to take a chance, and unless he sees a receiver wide open, he's likely to opt for the guy closest to him eg the guy that is a few yards short of the 3rd down marker that no one is covering.

Bradford is a good comparison. New system and loads of injuries and he cant get a win. He's just over 200 yards avg per game and his comp % is a bit over 50. He was supposed to be the next great QB and is having similar issues to "early" Alex, imagine if he gets another OC next year.

apples to oranges!

Bradford year 2, alex year 7
Bradford games (PHI, @NYG, BAL), Alex games (SEA,DAL, @CIN)

I could go on, but it is very likely pointless since you seem to insist they share similar scenarios...

You just opened a can of "he has never had good WR, good OL, playmakers, playcalling..." worms!
