By Lowell Cohn: Put this loss on Harbaugh's tab

Okay geniuses, what would you have said if he did what you suggested and they turned the ball over, lost yardage and had to punt, or been forced to kick another field goal and missed. You know darn good and well you would be riding Harbaugh's case for not taking the points.

The truth is, the offense was doing little to make any believe it was going to move the ball, much less score. I mean, did you turn the game off after half time?

Considering most coaches would do what Harbaugh did, I'd say you are talking out the side of your necks.

But then again, it's easy to run your mouth after the fact.

Why is it you bozos seem to want to put the guy on the hot seat before he has any time to do anything with this team? Two games in, and you're acting like he was expected to go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl and is an utter failure for not doing so.

Get real.
Whoa. Noob. In the words of the fairy Prime Time: "Slow your roll."

Seriously, you're gonna have to lower your expectations if you want to last on NinerTalk.

And don't call out the "geniuses." Everyone on here thinks you're referring only to them.

You can't argue with the facts, so you try to change the terminology?

When did you change your name to "Webster?"

It became "hindsight" a moment AFTER Harbaugh made the call, and someone disagreed with it. You have NO IDEA how many disagreed, or agreed, at that moment.

Relying on the "Listening to all the talk, lots of folks didn't like it" argument is hardly persuasive. Can you define "all" or "lots," exactly? No. How many people may have agreed with the call at the moment? You have no idea.

Just how do you know that "many people . . . didn't agree with the call the moment it happened. . . ?" Fact is, you don't.

No one said or wrote anything about the call until AFTER it was made. So, by definition, any questioning of the call--right or wrong--is HINDSIGHT. Also known as "second guessing," which is always much easier, since the second guesser is not under the stress of the moment, does not have any pressure on him, and has the benefit of the original decision maker's result (which was usually not good, or there would be no need to second guess.)

Fact is that it was only the second NFL game that Harbaugh's ever coached. And his team--coaches and players--have only been together a couple of months. Yet when some hack sportswriter says he thinks Harbaugh made a mistake, you immediately jump aboard that bandwagon. If Lowell Cohn suggests rehiring Nolan, or Singletary, you'd agree with that, too?

Please.

Try to remember, there's a reason Lowell is only a sportswriter, and not a head coach. He can criticize a strategic move all he wants, and will always choose one that didn't work out as well as hoped.

That's what he does. It doesn't mean he could have done any better, or that the new HC is lost, or that the team isn't headed in the right direction. Just mean's that Lowell can stroke his ego at night and think to himself, "Gotcha on that one, Harbaugh."

So what.
I agree.

Face it...we win the game, and it would have been a great decision.

We lose...Harbaugh's a goat.

Some folks just ain't happy unless ya do things according to their plan, which is generally made after the fact.
All this talk about what Harbaugh did and the fact remains. Alex Smith does not deserve to be a starting NFL QB and the team rots from top to bottom.

Are you kidding me that the secondary can get toasted by a rookie like that?

You are new. Please refrain from these sort of inflammatory posts. You can get your point across without attacking others. Thanks.

New screen name...been on the 'Zone for years, but fell into a posting slump during the last few disgraceful years. This post was actually supposed to be on Cohn's article, but it wouldn't go through.

No flames intended...just venting.

I actually agree with Lowell....Harbaugh Fubar'd....I still like him and think we have the right guy but you got to go for TD's in the NFL. Hopefully he learns and improves from this loss (him saying the players played well enough to win but didn't is his way of saying my fault guys...IMO). I can't believe I have to hear this b******t about Romo's redemption...we should've won this f**king game....

The decision is debatable.

But in the end its a soft move. Chance to kill the game blown for fear of a mishap. That's not going to get you wins. The good teams take that 15 yards and make the opposition pay.

The good teams didn't become good overnight...and we probably won't either.

The good teams make sound football decisions...like keeping points on the board when your offense is falling flat.

The good teams can generally afford to take risks because the coaching staff knows what they have.

Face it, the 'Niners are not a bad team, but until they prove otherwise, they are just somewhere in the middle trying to find their way up. That takes time.
Maybe this is just me, but I would much rather watch gradual improvement than instant success. Seems the teams that go from worste to first reverse course just as fast. When it all comes together, I want the team's opponents to see us coming...and fear us. Not know what is coming so they can make adjustments and knock us off our perch.

From Week 1 to Week 2, the team improved in some areas and fell flat in others. Harbaugh and co. will get this corrected and hopefully, Cincy will pay.
LOL. What? This article makes no sense. We just have a terrible secondary and we got burned.

You are right, good teams didn't become good teams overnight. except that its been over eight years for us and we are tired of it. I read the same type of posts every year. Lets hope you are right and Harbaugh will correct this team.

yea for real. Harbaugh's decision maybe ranks 3rd or 4th of why we lost this game. Secondary first, DL pressure second (second half), poor running game third, Harbaugh's decision fourth, passing offense fifth (second half)
I would ahve taken the 3pts like coach H. did. Those were in the bank points. Cohn should really stop writing articles about the 9ers, its like he HAS to do it.
Hate to tell you people this but...Cohn is SPOT ON

Wasn't this "play not to lose" mentality supposed to be gone with Single?

This team is soooo predictable still. How easy must it be to gameplan against us? How many plays were called where Alex's 1st or 2nd read were deep downfield against, what is supposed to be one of the weakest secondaries in the league? We may not know the answer to this but something tells me that if Harbaugh wanted him to, Alex would have stretched the field more.

Right now it's the same old same old in SF
