seriously? This is his FIRST game in the NFL, where he threw for more TD's than Alex did his whole first year, and you are saying he couldn't win the game when it counted? You understand that was a NFL history record breaking game for an NFL rookie, right? Even Manning, Marino, Montana, etc didn't do what he did today. Give it a rest, bro.

Trollexcuses

Cam Newton will be figured out in short order. He played against a crappy secondary and frankly not a very good team, and he has a super-weapon in Steve Smith. Once defenses take that away, he's toast and he'll revert to running.

One game and everyone's making him out to be the next Joe Montana. He'll fade as teams adjust.

He definitely isn't the next Alex Smith.

Again, amazing how high our standards become when talking about a QB other than Alex. All that can be said about the game Alex had today, which was less impressive by the way, yet people are in the in your face mode because of the qb rating he posted.

Fixed.

With the field position and TD scoring opportunities we had in the first half, he should have had a 120.

But this is Alex, we'll gladly take a 90.4.

Wow, dude. A rookie that had no off-season and was not expected to be NFL READY threw for 400 yards and you find a way to diminish that? s**tty secondary or not, it's the NFL. With all the s**tty teams Smith has faced, he has never managed to do such a feet.
Why are we comparing Alex to Cam? Or Cam to anyone for that matter? He's one of the most physically gifted QB prospects to come out in a LONG time. It's such a stupid comparison. What's the basis of the comparison? Because they're #1 over all picks 6 years apart? Cam is a TRUE #1 over all pick. Alex, in virtually any other draft with a decent QB class is a late 1st rounder project @ BEST.

So irritating. Every week this happens...win or lose. Some QB does well and it's "SEE DOOD! LUK AT SAYJ ROSANFELLZ!" or fill in the blank any QB who has a monster week. Waste. Of. Time.

Kudos to Cam for a monster 1st game. Anyone who saw him play, even in college, knew this kid would probably do some big things in the NFL. He has god given talent. No offense to Alex but he's not even in the same category. A better comparison to Alex (in terms of QB skill/talent) would be Bradford, Campbell, Henne, Sanchez, Romo, Palmer, etc. Those are guys that need the team to play well and everything clicking (for the most part) in order to do well. Cam has more natural talent than all of those guys.
This thread needs to be locked like all the other Alex threads, like him or not. I watched the whole game today and the only thing I can say is he (Alex) didn't turn the ball over. Other than that he stared the WR's down almost every play. Same old piss poor over and under throws. If this the QB performance you want to brag about you have VERY, VERY low QB expectations my friend. I'm going to tell you just like the guy who came up with the old QB rating system said on SIRIUS radio, "My rating system is "NOT" intended for single game performances. It is intended as a tool to rate the "WHOLE SEASON". His words not mine.

Would you have made that throw to Morgan?

Pointing out other quarterbacks that play way better than Alex = Trollexcuses? This is so sad. This is the exact complacency that has us in this 7 year mess.

they were in the playoffs last year
Why are we comparing Cam and Alex? What is the point? Cam is WAY more gifted and talented coming out of college. Smith is what he is. He will probably never put up numbers like that. We need him to play smart and get the ball to our playmakers. S*it, what QB has put up 422 yards? Not many do it. This comparison is pointless.
Smith did a pretty job. Was not spectacular, but he 'manage' the game Phil Simms like today. At one point he was 7 of 9, and 4for 4 in one scoring drive.
