Taveras Gooden signs with Niners

we need another quality passrusher or vet CB then an ILB

I like this pickup ...Gooden is a decent ILB ...and this should allow Fangio more flexibility to use Willis and Bowman as pass rushers in certain situations ...good stuff

The 9ers are not set at any position so they need upgrades. Any time they get a chance to upgrade I hope they jump at it. Positions where they seem somewhat comfortable:

RB--Gore, Hunter, Dixon offer a pretty good 1, 2, 3 punch.
DL--They could use a try NT but the rest is there with good backups.
LB--Never have enough good pass rushers! But this group seems really solid and some of the cuts were painful (a good thing). Gooden puts them over the top.

That's it! All the other positions are wait and see if they work out kind of situations. Not a sign of a championship team.

Weakest Positions:

QB--Smith will surprise but if he goes down it will be very sad this year.
WR--Edwards and Crabtree seem to be NFL level but the rest have a lot to prove.
OL--A lot of talent but very little chemistry. Hope they work into a great line as "potential" seems to be there. (Sometimes I hate the word potential!).
DB--Wait to see if Spencer comes back but Rogers may be the only NFL ready player. I like Whitner, Goldson and Smith at S but will they be a good unit?
FB--Not sold on Norris and Miller seems good but eratic.

Highly doubtful that they have Gooden play outside.

Maybe they have their eyes on a free agent....

Perhaps Gooden's strength is on the inside, but if he plays here principally to cover the Tight End, he will function as an outside linebacker ala Manny Lawson.
Also, the Niners have OLB Monte Simmons cooling his heals on the Practice Squad.

I thought Applewhite played decent. He had some pressures and at least one sack that I remember.

I have to admit I am not a fan of what just happened. We all know Harralson will never be a decent pass rusher and a more limited cover guy. In terms of pass rush, there is a big drop off after Aldon Smith and Ahmed Brooks. Disappointing to say the least.

Kristic and Applewhite were cut for Goodsen? Goodsen must count as two players.
