Rogers and Clements is sort of a wash

Rogers > Clements. Carlos Rogers can cover, he just can't catch the damn ball so he doesn't create INTs. Clements can't cover, gambles too much and STILL doesn't create INTs. I'd rather have Rogers knock the ball down and blow an INT than have Clements get burned and allow a long gain or TD.

The coaching is decidedly different. The offense was far more varied, lots of shifting and different formations and packages were used to keep defenses guessing. I'm not worried about attempts to run it in the end zone with our worst back (Omon did score if you recall) - this is preseason and surely they wanted to see what was up with the running game in the red zone (as well as Hunter vs Omon vs Dixon - I think Dixon is losing). Alex looked a lot better. The defense I think could have issues with the pass still but I doubt if it's a lot different from last season and more likely the secondary will be improved with Whitner & Rogers. Rogers and Clements is sort of a wash but Whitner was a nice upgrade. Aldon Smith - I like what I've seen.

Welcome to the zone! Rogers should be fine. Clements would have been as well if we utilized em to his strengths! For instance he is a press corner, who we had play 10 yards off line of scrimmage lol that turns his press ability to a non factor! Rogers is more of a cover corner. Dixon need to get over his dancing but he had shown some flashs, but hopefully hunter is the real deal! Great compliment to mr frank gore! Alex appears to be very confident! This yr is gonna be very promissing

Kendall Hunter is Frank Gore Jr., so I wouldn't say he "compliments" Gore, more like he emulates Gore (which is a GOOD thing). A perfect compliment to Gore would be a speedy, change-of-pace back. Hunter is a one-cut runner with a very similar style to Gore, but he's smaller so it's unlikely he'll break as many tackles. Hunter is quick, but not FAST.

So, I finally got a chance to watch the second preseason game. And I was left with an odd feeling of familiarity.

Sure, we looked a lot better than last week. But we usually beat up on the Raiders. That way, and otherwise, it all seemed like deja vu.

QB Play:

Alex looked solid, but far from elite and moved the chains without putting points on the board and threw a critical pick when he misread the D.

Beyond Alex, we have nothing we can bank on in case of injury or poor performance. CK showed flashes, but he's a rookie and as much hope as we have for him, there is no telling what his future holds. After that, we have a journeyman from the UFL. Bottom line, we haven't brought in proven QB talent that would even be a backup for most teams since Jeff Garcia left. Just draft picks (high and low) and career backups and wanna bes who have never given us either starter quality talent or even solid depth.

Even the Raiders have Boller and Edwards as legit backups, and they both are arguably better than most, if not every QB that has been on our roster since Garcia.

I had faith in your post until I read that part. then didnt read lol

Part of that was hyperbole, but not really. Boller and Edwards suck. But name the QBs on our roster since Garcia that are any better. For all the hate, Alex is probably the best we have had and he's not significantly better than either at this point. On almost any other team, he'd be in the same spot, a backup with decent NFL experience.

Who have we had who has been any better than them? Troy Smith? Shaun Hill? J.T. O'Sullivan? Trent Dilfer? Chris Weinke? Tim Rattay? Ken Dorsey? Cody Pickett? The closest is Dilfer who was ok at one time but was washed up by the time we got him.

Shaun Hill > every other QB you just mentioned.

Alex's footwork, fundamentals, and the ability to go through his reads seem much improved. I understand your lack of enthusiasm; after all, we beat the Raiders consistently and we didn't have any scoring drives (TDs) with our #1 offense.

But there are a few areas that I saw that were different this year than at any point of Alex's career. First off, Braylon Edwards in limited reps seems to be the best WR he's ever played with. The offensive line still wasn't perfect, but looked much improved from one week to the next. And I would say most importantly, I'm sure Harbaugh wasn't putting together a legit gameplan out there. We won't try running with Anthony Dixon 5 out of 6 plays from the 2 yard line.

But your overall assessment of this team in terms of where they will end the season (6-10 to 9-7 depending on specific game circumstances) seems pretty accurate.

i agree with all your points, though i think 10-6 is a possibility

lol there is a thin line between, which side are you on!?
Can’t wait to see what Harbaugh has for a goal line offense in the reg. season, my guess he is saving it for the when the games count and just trying to establish the run down there right now. So other than the vanilla goal line I would say the coaching is the biggest difference, we got more 1st downs the first half then we did in the first half of the season last year and I don’t recall any 3 and outs in that first half, dont recall that happening in a half last year pre season or reg season. And let us not forget a legit number 1 receiver, havnt had that in a while.

I can see it now... our first goal line package, smith subs out, kap subs in, playaction - naked bootleg TD run by Kaep.

Really? That's a stretch, as even the "best" on the list are wash and backups on any decent team. And even if so, THAT'S the best QB we've brought in since 2004? What is different this year? Another chance on a rookie and another washed up backup.

Why would you take out a QB with a 118 rating in the red zone and put in a QB to run in a goal line situation my friend? Maybe in a situation where we had the game in hand already, but otherwise, it isn't very prudent.

If one takes the play calling in the 2nd game of the pre-season as an indicator of what we'll see come September, then I guess they should be worried . .

How is it a "stretch?" Hill was a pretty good QB here and continues to be a decent QB in Detroit. He outperformed every QB we've had since Garcia, and that includes Alex Smith whether people like it or not. He had a better than 2-to-1 TD-INT ratio here, better than 61% completion percentage and a winning record. It is no stretch to say he is the best we've had since Garcia. It would be a stretch to compare him to other GOOD QBs, but we're not comparing him to good QBs, we're comparing him to what we've had since Jeff Garcia left. You said Alex is the best we've had, I say that's untrue.
