Allright zone, IMO we have 5 safeties we will keep on our roster due to all the signings we made.

This is how I see it:

FS: Reggie Smith 30 Dashon Goldson 38 C.J. Spillman 27

SS: Donte Whitner 31 Madieu Williams 20

I think Colin Jones makes the practice squad b/c of his great special teams play, but IMO Spillman has the upper
hand over Jones b/c he is better in coverage.

Also note: This is with Mays being traded and Curtis Taylor being cut

FS: Goldson, Smith, Spillman
SS: Whitner, Williams

I think Goldson is the starter but will be on a short leash with Smith waiting to take over.
Right now, I'd go with:

FS / Dashon Goldson VS Reggie Smith

SS / Donte Whitner , C.J. Spillman (<--- who was playing SS last weekend)

I think Taylor Mays will be traded eventually... probably when injuries increase throughout preseason.

Colin Jones to the P-squad, though yes, he may beat out Spillman. Curtis Taylor probably released.

No Frisco "you the man!

I agree with everything you said above except I think Goldson will be the starter at FS and Reggie being the 3rd safety and the primary backup to both positions imo.

I also can't see Mays on this team. Somehow he will be traded and I'll bet he will be showcased for these last 3 presason games.

thanks brother, I def can see you wanting Goldson over Smith, this is just like Ginn/Morgan:
I think both are good enough to be starters, I just gave a very slight edge to Reggie Smith only b/c we
took our time to sign Goldson, and from what we heard from camp Reggie was doing really well.

Point is these type of Position Battle threads are mostly for thinking who makes it and who doesnt but it seems like
everyone agrees with this stuff for the most part. All hail the ZONE

This, but I still hope we keep mays.
Reggie Smith could easily be the better FS option, and we all should be hoping for him to win out. Why? Because he is better at manning up on a slot WR or back shifting out to the slot. If Fangio dials up heavy blitz on what either was or becomes an open set, then we can still bring it. Having Reggie man up on the extra receiver is a big bonus, and will better allow us to send extra pressure.

... but overall, of course, may the best man win the job.
I always liked Curtis Taylor as a 7th round pick. Seems to have a decent amount of talent, but just not a very bright football player. Seems to get lost out there. I wouldn't want to keep him for younger or better players though.

I hope he catches on somewhere else.

I agree with you. Too bad Reggie got hurt. I was really looking forward to him making a leap this year.

He very well could make a leap. From what I remember he should only be out up to 6 weeks (which started 2 weeks ago). He should have the majority of the season.

Anyone see Williams being cut if we can not trade Mays. Mays is good on special teams and we have a lot invested in him and nothing really in Williams. In this scenario Mays would be the 5th safety behind Spillman and Smith. Just a thought.
Id rather have Mays backing up and being coached up at SS. Much more than Madieu my neck Williams or Taylor or Spillman. Goldson and R.Smith should be enough to handle the FS spot this season. Then they can figure out who they wanna keep there next year.
Williams also has zero guaranteed money from that 1 year deal.

Im not sure Madieu played SS, He was the starting FS in Minny.

But anyway, like said Spillman can play SS, as well as Smith.

We should keep Whitner and Goldson starting, with Spillman and Smith as primary backups.

Last spot between Williams, Jones and Taylor

Mays better be traded, he is useless IMO.
