Postion Battles: FS/SS

Mays is not useless. He's only 23 and has way more upside than williams as a backup/special teamer.. I'd like to even see what he can bring to blitz packages because a 230 pound guy who can run a 4.3 could be interesting. Even if he lacks coverage skills he's got other things going for him that should keep him on the roster even if it's as a special teamer, such as pure speed and tackling ability.

I can see why they shopped him, but there's no reason they "have" to cut him. He's cheap, he's young, and he's a fast/hard tackler.

My 4 would be whitner/goldson starting, smith/spillman/mays cut williams since signing him was mostly just to make sure we got someone new in FA...before we got whitner/goldson back. The only reason you trade mays is if he does have a bunch of value on a more safety-needy team. You don't just cut him for nothing.

I'd go Goldson, Whitner, Williams, Stillman, and Smith.. I think Smith will be on the PUP first though, hence Jones or Taylor makes it initially. Taylor (because of injuries) and Jones are both PS eligible, and that's where they both end up.

I thought Reggie Smith was out for the year?

a big point to is mays has seemed to do everything right in this situation. everyone knows we want to trade him but he continues to work and say the right things. just because we dont have a long term plan for him doesnt mean we have to cut him if there is no trade partner this year. we will see if he eventually asks for his release as the season goes on if he is buried in the depth chart

I think Colin Jones makes the practice squad b/c of his great special teams play, but IMO Spillman has the upper
hand over Jones b/c he is better in coverage.

I can't see Mays being cut, and his trade value is close to nil. Maybe we keep 6.

The problem is that the guy cannot play safety, he is just an athlete with absolutely no coverage skills, and to top it off he doesn't like to wrap up when he tackles. You could see coming out of college this guy was another USC HG workout warrior. He played FS at SC for how many years? He only got three interceptions and a handful of big hits. He plays like a track athlete in football gear. Maybe in a few years with a lot of attention he might be able to play strong safety, but he is buried on our depth chart. Maybe Singletard can talk hi team into trading him for a fourth or fifth rounder, otherwise we are stuck with him.

Too soon to give up him and our Safeties outside of Whitner none are locked up but Mays. R.Smith was a CB bust turned safety and it took him a few years to learn the position. Spillman misses as many tackles as Mays and lacks speed. Taylor still looks lost, cant tackle, and cant cover. For a 1st year safety hes looked as good or better than any safety on our roster. Whitner was abused his 1st few years, R.Smith looked like s**t, same as Goldson. SPillman and Taylor both still look really raw and neither have Mays speed, hitting power or STs ability.

Exactly. Mays played much better than Spillman last game. Mays made a couple of tackles and I didn't see him whiff on any, can't say the same for Spillman, he didn't look very good at all.

The lions need safety help, we are going to trade madea williams to the lions, for shaun hill! and then keep mays, and cut mckown.

pass, I would rather have a passrusher like Cliff Avril than Shaun Hill

Madieu Williams doesn't bring anything to the table IMO.

That's how I see it. Williams became expendable once we got Whitner, and then even more expendable when we resigned Dashon. I think we jumped at the opportunity to grab a veteran guy with starting experience when we weren't sure if we were going to have any safeties with experience. I don't see the point in keeping Williams when he's not going to get much play, his veteran leadership isn't necessary, and there Mays would be far better for our special teams.

Unless Williams can be a good special teamer, he's gone.
