It feels like they would have trouble putting 22 players on the field, there are holes all over the place, even if they replace them can we expect an upgrade in talent? I hope we are not blowing up the team to rebuild from scratch.
at least we got our QB of the future

This should anger certain fans.
So why not get an established qb, Jed? We haven't had one in 8 frigging years. Just sell the team.
Vince Young was available.
Shoot, even have Mcnabb battle A.Smith (
) for the top qb spot.
This team is tanking and you know it.
What happens when Luck turns into Leinart?
They are talking about rebuilding Vince Young from the ground up...fundamentally. Why would the 9ers want a QB so lacking? McNabb would have been a better choice but he isn't better than Smith at this point...very disappointing last two years.
Harbaugh seems to be putting together a really young team that will have an abundance of enthusiasm but lacking in experience. Will be a bumpy road this year but sets up the team for major improvement down the road.
As far as tanking for Luck? Don't see it. Too hard to do as many teams will be very bad this year...it would be too obvious to fumble every kick return.

The "FML, the Dorks will NEVER live up to my standards" crowd invariably glosses over the impact of having an unestablished coaching staff and no off season to get established would naturally have on luring upper tier FA's into the program. You can pretend it doesn't or shouldn't matter, but empirical evidence suggests that it does.
I suppose Baalke could have re-assembled the majority of last years roster and we probably could been more competitive than we will likely be. But that would be at the risk of introducing pieces into the mix that didn't necessarily fit what Harbaugh/Roman/Fangio wanted for their schemes . . . or he could re-set, keep the obvious keepers (I wish Baas was retained) and build from there.
Junior GM's can scream "apologist" if it makes you feel better, but I recently re-set my patience meter to baseline. Harbaugh and Baalke aren't obliged to carry the baggage created by the last 6-8 years (see Alex Smith signing) and rightly so.

We are all assuming this team will play horrible this season but as a matter of fact we don't know that. Yes we weren't major players in FA but I'm glad we didn't sign any big-time free agents, which would cost us greatly down the road anyway. We lost starters on defense, which can probably get by on some mid-level signings by preseason at CB. We don't know what Vic has in store. He might have a plan to get the younger guys involved and might still be successful.
Lets not forget Harbaugh is an offense guy. We still have our offense intact. We still have 2 of the best TE's in the league and a RB duo that can produce. The only problem was the offense was not being utilized correctly the past several years, well that changes with Harbaugh. Our offense is expected to produce this season with Harbaugh in the drivers seat. The defense might have dropped a notch, but the offense might be raised 2 notches.
We are all be critical now.....but lets see how the preseason pans out and the first couple of games. Then we can start being critical.

Horribly managed expectations for this team in free agency. These players have to want to come here as much as we want them here. No wins = no good free agents

Whats going on is unbelievable, we just lost Franklin and Lawson in one day. I wish they would be honest with the fans about their plan. Saying "we have a plan" and not doing anything is not a plan.

Before the lockout was done most people felt that Baalke/Harbaugh had a plan and had it worked out in detail ready to go when the lockout was lifted. Now that we are seeing the plan unfold now most people, since it does not agree with their plan for the Niners, are all up in arms because Baalke/Harbaughs plan does not match up with their plans.
In my opinion B/Hs plan is working out well. We got some players back, lost some that may not have been that helpful to us. A. Smith, Gore, McDonald, Wragge are back. We don't know the details of why Baas did not sign but B/H had their plan and it is now in effect.I believe that the holes will be filled and all will work out well for this season - 8-8 or above. Next draft and off-season should see the next major jump in clarity. But for right now it is unfolding, and I for one am happy that it is clarifying.

Free Agency, overall, is overrated. Doesn't make sense to overspend on just a few players. It will hinder you in signing your own players in the future. Building through the draft, coaching them up and then extending or re-signing your homegrown players to long term contracts is he way to go.
Of course winning still hinges on having an established QB, good talent evaluators and good coaches, but building through the draft is key.

Bulls**t this FO is on par with the cheap s**t they pull in Buffalo and how they used to be in Arizona. 49ers have been building thru the draft since 08 right after we had a FA splurge. Since then its no one helpful. This current team is devoid of talent at CB, C,WR,S,RG,NT,FB and OT. This team has no business being this far below the cap. Its a f**king shame and soon to be disaster.

from NFL.com. #5. 1994 49ers
The 49ers' dynasty went into decline when Steve Young replaced Joe Montana as quarterback in the early 1990s, punctuated by consecutive NFC Championship Game loses to the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 and 1993. The following year, the 49ers broke the bank to bring in big names Ken Norton Jr., Gary Plummer, Richard Dent, Rickey Jackson and, the centerpiece, Deion Sanders to win in Super Bowl XXIX. But at what cost? The 49ers have not returned to the Super Bowl since.

Not to mention we broke records with how much dead money was on our roster after that.
