Goodbye, Heitmann. Thank you for being the focal point of one of the most asinine threads in Webzone history. You were a good football player.

Very solid but a little jab at MadDog: If Heitmann is as good as MD said, JH wouldn't have cut him.

Actually, 2011 was the last contract year for Heitmann, so it makes sense for the team to cut him since he won't be able to play this season. It cuts a cap number for a player that will not be active.

The thread I started two years ago was entitled, "Eric Heitmann is a Good Football Player" since there were a few people on the board continuously, and without merit, trashed his play (based on one play from 2007), even after being the consensus best OL on the team for years. So, I simply stated the obvious, that he was a good football player. Little did I know that some individuals would blow their gaskets over such a "ridiculous" idea. Those individuals called him, "garbage", "a joke", "a bad football player", and more stupid comments, even after fellow players, coaches, opposing players, the media, and more praised his play. In the end, after a fine season capped by Heitmann trashing Kris Jenkins, those people seemed to disappear.

When all the dust was settled, a 30+ page thread emerged from the simple concept that "Eric Heitmann is a Good Football Player". Who knew?

I don't know MD. Our Center situation is almost as bad as our QB situation now. Yet we still cut Heitmann. Either his injury put him out for good or he's easily replaceable, which we were witness to last year.

Heitmann was not going to be able to play until December due to his neck injury, and as this is the final year of his contract, there was no reason to keep him around to hog a roster spot and cap space (about $2.2 million).

It is true that our center position is bad right now, and if he comes back in 2012, the team may elect to sign him as a free agent.

I'm sure his injury is the main reason and I'm mainly pulling your leg. However, he was easily replaced last year. Either way, not only does our QB of the offense situation suck, our QB of the offensive line situation sucks now too...

not even mentioning our Bell Cow.

The problem with this OL in the past has been a lack of talent and lack of cohesiveness. While there appears to be a talent upgrade in some of the younger guys (Staley, Iupati, Davis), the lack of a cohesive unit, and the constant turnover is simply not good.

Both Heitmann and Baas would have added a calming influence to both Rachal and Davis, who both appear often to have that "deer in the headlights" look. Both Heitmann and Baas were also a security blanket for Alex Smith.
