I don't get how many board members think a restructuring of Clements' contract is a lock, or even a probability.
He knows that the Niners are chasing his replacement, and the moment one of these CB's is signed, he is gone. And, why would he volunteer to restructure? I think he'd rather make $8 million in Baltimore or Tampa than $8 million in SF.

Conflicting reports surface about 49ers' Clements
In a prime example of the confusion that a hectic free agency market can create, conflicting reports have surfaced on the roster status of San Francisco 49ers veteran cornerback Nate Clements.
NFL Network reported today that Clements will be cut on Thursday.
However, a league source close to the situation said that the report is incorrect at worst and premature at best.
Cutting Clements couldn’t become official until Thursday at the soonest.
If the 49ers were to release Clements and clear his eight-year, $80 million deal off their salary cap, then it would be to acquire an even higher profile cornerback: Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
The 49ers are interested in trying to land Asomugha and keep him in the Bay Area, but the New York Jets are very much in the picture for his services as well. Asomugha played collegiately at Cal-Berkeley.

For a shut down corner and a ridiculous salary and signing bonus, on a team with nothing else, we blow a huge wad and get...a corner who is used to playing with other talented professionals on his side, and he comes here and is a talent who got wasted. He also got toasted, roasted, turned around, beat...but shut down corner? Never. What a way to build a team...from the one CB up. I swear this team had the worst front office(ok, starting with owners) of any team on the planet. We finally got the one guy we needed most, a real HC who happens to also be an OC...an absolute necessity in this passing league. Why restructure a contract for a guy who never lived up to his "shutdown" and not go after one of a slew of guys who are going to get a look and a promise and be gone on 31 other teams. I trust our HC and GM to come up with some valid CBs, heck maybe look at everyone out there, at least for a tryout. No more betting the farm on a shutdown corner who wasn't.

At one point maybe but he has lost a step and isn't good in open spaces. He would be a better SS because he is better off near the line of scrimmage and can defend the run. Having him play FS would mean Mays potentially at SS and that's too guys who are bad in space in the defensive backfield which isn't good. I think we are best off if we save the money on Goldson and go Smith/Mays and use Clements as a nickel, potentially dime corner. Use him against TE's and bigger WR's, not quick guys.

It was a joke signing him to that contract. He raped us . We got nothing in return. Didn't even have the common courtesy to give us a reach around

It was just the right place at the right time for him. He always showed some flashes when he was here.
I dont think you can blame coaching. He was in Washington with Gibbs (an all time great) was there, then Chicago, and this was his 2nd year with Denver. He wont have another year like that.

Clements was a reasonable attempt but he didn't come close to earning his pay. Hence, I expect them to make a serious attempt at Namdi/Joseph, AND try to keep Clements for a fifth DB. So while I don't expect him to accept that role easily, it would be a good team move if they can get one of the top two CBs.
