The 49ers believe that the West Coast offense is a better fit for Smith's abilities. The system will allow him to use his athleticism outside the pocket and get rid of the ball quicker. According to one staff member, the 49ers attempted just 17 passes off three-step drops last season, and 37 percent of their pass attempts were off seven-step drops. With a young offensive line and fairly green wideout corps, that made a tough situation even more difficult for Smith.

It's awesome that the coaching staff analyzed this but it's incredibly frustrating to know that our players were simply NOT put in a position to succeed last year. What a difference coaching makes.

I really cant wait to see this offense. I havent been this excited since Nolan brought in Martz....I wonder how the offense would have been in Singletary wouldnt have fired him before year 2.

All of this means alex should stay next year.

Championship.

Alex wont even be on the team next year.

So I guess trolling is ok as long as its a vet..........
Not trying to start anything but what's the point? Is it fun to sit behind a screen all day and post nothing but negativety? That's sad... talk about the Almighty alexsexuals.

So it ok to post stuff as long as it's not reality? Saying Alex will lead us to the NFC Championship, book it. Is also considered trolling..

As for the 3 step drops, I think we all forget that Alex Smith was terrible at the shorter drops and was much more effective at the 5 step drops so he has more time to scan the field. He hasn't shown to be very good at the quick "blind" throws which a 3 step drop consists of. Unless Harbaugh teaches him a trick to making it successful or unless Alex begins to trust the holes in the defense more, then I don't see Alex being successful in the quick short "blind" throws. Even Martz was trying to get Alex to trust the spot of the throw rather than requiring to see it all open prior to throwing.

Martz is notorious for running deep routes with his receivers, and 5/7 step drops for the QB. Alex has never played in a WCO-type offense.
Longest 4 days in awhile... eh?

I asked what's the point? What are your intentions of always coming here and bashing on Alex? What good does that do. To me u post just to rile people up. Why? What is the fun inn that? It seems like a waste. Is there satisfaction in it? If so I just think people need to evaluate themselves.

Was the trolling comment at me? I was just stating with all those experts/coaches/opinions stating he might be better in a WCO, I just figured he would be here again next year.. Either as starter or a decent backup.
I hope Chris Hogan AKA White Lightning makes the team somehow! He's been lighting it up in TC.

He's a pretty big WR with speed, 6'1 220.

Appearntly you didn't get the mod memo of keeping it on topic..

P.S. I can say the same to you Alex fans that go on every board and claim Alex going to be a pro bowler and leads us to the NFC Championship. If your going to make comments like that. You can expect those of us who don't think the same to voice our displeasure. It's a two way street man. You can't have it one way. Then expect the other side not to voice thier displeasure.

He has but even in other offenses, he has struggled a lot on the "quick hit" throws (3 step or less of a drop). Even in the success he had in the Raye-Gun or even late last year, the quick throws were his worst. They were either off target, deflected or sailed high for the most part.

This is one aspect of his game that has shown to be VERY weak because he just doesn't trust throwing the ball before seeing a receiver open or he just can't get that quick step and release out.

I'm kinda surprised how quiet things have been regarding the offensive line. I'm really quite concerned.

Davis is just out of his rookie year.
Chilo is starting at RG?
Snyder still playing at Center even after the Goodwin acquisition.

These are some big question marks that have received very little light with everything that was going on with FA, WRs, and the D in general.

Iupati and Staley are less of a concern...even if they're getting eaten alive by Aldon and Justin.... I think it is more of a testiment of the talent we now have for an effective pass rush.

It's funny his redzone numbers beg to differ. In the redzone it's usually a quick throw. This tells me that he can make those throws and coaching/playcalling when not in the redzone wasn't utilizing our players strengths. Look at the percentages someone posted, Alex was making 5/7 step drops at a very high percentage. This forced our Oline to try to hold blocks longer, this also tells me that they were looking for more deep plays and not quick throws. The WRs couldn't get open, our Oline couldn't block so Smith was forced to dump the ball off or throw it away due to pressure. I put that more on coaching than Alex. We were way too predictable and horribly coached.

I hope Snyder is not starting center into the season. I hate having someone lead the line that's never been a center before. The job should go to an already established player in Goodwin.
