Justin Smith (RDE) and Aldon Smith (ROLB) abused the left side of the line when they were on the field together. Other than that, they seemed to hold up pretty well.
thats great news since staley and iupati are two of our best linemen. aldon looks like the real deal so far, kinda like when everyone was hatin on revis in the draft and he turned out to be a beast

I have a ton of pics to post from today's practice, but a few observations first:
- ALDON SMITH IS A BEAST. He's not only huge, but he's consistently unstoppable regardless of who's blocking him. He's usually the first to the QB, and does so with a number of different moves (inside jab step, outside speed rush). He also does a pretty good job of holding the point in the run game, which is surprising since he's still getting used to standing up.
- Ian Williams at NT really made some nice plays. Whether it was plugging up the middle on the run game or even getting pressure up the middle on a few occasions, he really looked like a classic 3-4 nose tackle. I'd be surprised if he didn't shine in pre-season games and make a strong case to make the final roster.
- Kendall Hunter will make an impact for us this year! Though not nearly as stout/stocky as Maurice Jones-Drew, he has a very similar running style.
- Ted Ginn made a ton of plays today. He dropped a few easy ones during warm ups, but when it came to 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills, he consistently caught the ball and turned it upfield, each time running it out to the end zone in the tradition of the great Jerry Rice.
- Alex Smith was solid, especially on the underneath/check-down routes (and no, that's not a backhanded compliment). He had a beautiful throw to Ted Ginn towards the end of practice that was awesome to watch. But he made his living today throwing to the TEs and RBs.
- Kapernick has a HUGE upside and ALL the tools necessary to be a great one, but is so raw that I can't see him contributing anytime soon. When he lets it rip, the ball gets there in a hurry and seems to stick to the receivers hands. But more often than not (especially during 11-on-11 drills), he's tenative with his reads and misfires. Still, the talent is undeniable (the TD pass to Vernon over the middle was a thing of beauty, the pickoff by Joseph was not)...we just have to be VERY patient as fans.
- Jeremiah Masoli can play QB at the next level. He may never be a starter, and he may not even make this team, but the guy can play. He had the play of the day with a roll-out bomb to WR Justin Beiler (ball thrown 40+ yards downfield while moving to his right), and consistently hit his WRs in stride with 1 exception late in the practice. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by his play, and wouldn't be shocked if he stayed around on the P.S.
- Braylon Edwards is huge! Yes, he dropped about 3 passes today and overall looked rusty, but there's no denying that this guy will eventually be a playmaker for us.
- Tramaine Brock made a number of plays and really stood out among all the CBs today (IMO).
- P-Willy is king beast! After LB drills and 3 hours of practice (inlcuding RB/LB drills where he CLOCKED a RB so hard stopped and took notice, and a pick of Alex Smith), he went straight to the weight room area and worked out for about 45 minutes or so. That's what a Hall of Fame LB is all about.
- Don't be surprised if Larry Grant starts over Bowman next to Willis. He looks the part of a TED ILB, and made a number of plays as well. I also liked the way newcomer Blake Castonzo looked as an ILB replacement, and that was after tweaking his ankle in earlier kickoff coverage drills.
- Harbaugh has this team practicing up tempo, and everyone is in to it. I've been to practices before where guys were mentally checked out and just going through the paces. But not today. Everyone was moving, hustling, talking to each other and generally seemed excited to be out there. There's definitely a different energy and buzz on that field, and that was the MOST exciting thing I saw today (other than Willis killing fools, of course).
Great info and post!

Guys, Im f**king around a bit, but in all seriousness how do you feel about it? Think it helps? Pros, Cons?
the pros are that it keeps players on their toes, probably keeps things interesting, adds a little tension and mystery, which maybe makes it more fun. I imagine the sudden shift makes things pretty lively.
con is that some lazy brained player might not realize the change for some reason and get hurt.
Overall I think its kind of strange but whatever, I don't think the injury risk is enough to really be concerned.
Darwin would have a comment that pertains here...

You will not beleive how well coached they were. I used to go the USD games when Jim coached Josh Johnson down in San Diego. It will be deceptive, exciting, and mind-numbing compared to the past 7 dildoes Alex has had to play for. He should fit in well because Jim will not ask him to do anything that is not in his strong suit. You will see alot of motion and multiple formations. He has a formidable coaching staff with tremendous coaching skills. One thing you will not see is Alex running for his life and rolling out with no one to throw to. I cannot possibly tell you how far out of touch the Nowin and Dingleberry offenses were. There were high schools with better offenses seriously. This will be a breath of fresh air for all of us. His only motto is to keep the chains moving. You will see a lot of Gore you have not seen before and Vernon will be a scourge for other defenses. I went to my first Niner game 55 years ago and have seen the good along with the bad. I can honestly say our young fans have been robbed after having to look at these offensive disasters for the past 7 years. To listen to these nabobs trashing Smith just shows how little they know about offensive football. I was at Qualcomm when Dan Fouts was booed out of the stadium. Along comes Bill Walsh as QB coach and Don Coryell and Fouts goes to the HOF. It is all coaching, look at the Pats. Brady goes down and Cassel steps in and they keep winning.
Good read Dave...thanks for posting that.

That was one the best observation so far from TC Ghost thanks I enjoyed the details.
-Good to see Ian Williams is getting in on plays, don't know if you've notice my posts and how much I'm excited about Williams.
-I admit, I booed the Aldon Smith pick, and as time goes by and training camp goes on, I can clearly see I'll be eating more crow.
-I also think Larry Grant will eventually win the Ted spot.

How is Rachal and Davis looking? Are we still hoping for Snyder to shift or do they look okay? I haven't heard much about them.
