- Alex Smith was solid, especially on the underneath/check-down routes (and no, that's not a backhanded compliment). He had a beautiful throw to Ted Ginn towards the end of practice that was awesome to watch. But he made his living today throwing to the TEs and RBs.
- Kapernick has a HUGE upside and ALL the tools necessary to be a great one, but is so raw that I can't see him contributing anytime soon. When he lets it rip, the ball gets there in a hurry and seems to stick to the receivers hands. But more often than not (especially during 11-on-11 drills), he's tenative with his reads and misfires. Still, the talent is undeniable (the TD pass to Vernon over the middle was a thing of beauty, the pickoff by Joseph was not)...we just have to be VERY patient as fans.
As raw as you say Kaepernick looked, he was easily the best out there. He had the tightest, most consistent passes of any QB. You mention his overthrows or misfires, but every QB was off at times and Kaepernick was overall more accurate than the other 3. He also showed his ability to run, ripping off big runs on a couple plays when protection broke down.
Alex looked the same as he usually does. I won't say anything else about his day because it'll be construed as "hating."
I tried to get some plays recorded, but the security chicks were on their game today. I got this play of Kaepernick throwing a beautiful pass to Joe Hastings. It's not a great video and it looks like I'm a mile away, but whatever. I was also too lazy to make a YouTube account so I had my buddy upload it for me. LOL.
In terms of pure talent, Kap was definitely the best QB on the field...and it wasn't close. But in terms of effectiveness today, I gave it to Smith overall. That said, I liked Kap A LOT in the 2-minute drill. He just has a knack of fairly easily moving the ball downfield in hurry-up mode. But I thought he struggled even more than Masoli when it was just regular 11-on-11 and he was asked to sit in the pocket and make downfield reads. Not that he was horrible, but he was clearly more tentative.
Harbaugh was doing a lot of coaching when Kap was under center, making sure he got rid of the ball quicker and with better footwork.
Effectiveness to Smith? Ehh. I won't argue, but an argument can be made and that's not a good thing when comparing a 7 year vet to a rookie. Basically, if you've seen Alex Smith play on Sunday, you know what he did today. He too often settled for the checkdown before routes could even develop. He seems to love Ginn in practice, though that chemistry probably won't help much on gameday because Ginn is unlikely to contribute much behind Edwards, Crabtree and Morgan.
