Justin Smith Snub from TOP 100

J Smith is not a flashy player. He is a meat and potatoes, get the job done player who is always around the ball. Those players are often underappreciated. Only the guys who have to play against him would see just how tough he is.

That said, I'm not sure he is a top 100. That's a pretty short list--25 positions or so, makes 4 per position. Is he a top four DE? I would say yes but am biased.

I didn't watch it or read any of the lists. But that is a bogus method to figure out the list. I doubt there were any DT on the list or 3-4 DEs. Maybe 2 NT and a s**tload of cover 2 DEs. No FBs and very few interior oline

Then I imagine probably 8 QBs, 10 RBs, 20 WRs/TEs, and probably 10+ 3-4OLB.

i undrstand this is a best players of 2011 list, but u cant deny past seasons play a role in some of the votes, dockett had a down year like most of his team, he actually missed some games finally, he was second behind smith on that consecutive starts for a d-lineman list. for my money, hes right there with justin smith as a 5 technique, he plays on a team i hate but hes a hell of a player, to see him not on the list made me realize smith wasnt gonna make it as were a few other well deserving 5 techniques, its an underrated position.

I agree that Dockett is a disruptive player, but I think he gets as much notoriety for his act as he does his play on the field. I think Justin Smith is a more consistent disruption to the offense, but his blue collar, team-first approach makes him less famous (no naked twitter pics). Being on a losing team can't help in these situations, either.

Agree, just using 25/100 as an example of how difficult it is to make the top 100. When you add up the QBs, WRs, RBs, CB, and LBs you are probably left with few slots for the non-glamor positions.

If this is based off of last year he should make it since he did start in the pro bowl

what does the pro bowl have to do with it? i mentioned dockett not making it in an earlier post and i was told smith had a MUCH better year thasn dockett, but they both made the pro bowl and both missed the list, to me the pro bowl is irrelevant in this list

The pro bowl is supposed to be the best in the league that year which is basically what this list is supposed to be. So if u make the pro bowl u gotta be a top 100 player
if we were a consistent playoff team then i could see him cracking the top 100

Exactly, no excuse for a 2011 pro bowler to not be on list. Also, only 5 guards made it, yet the Saints had 2 in the top-55. You'd figure a team in which both guards are top-55 players would rush for like 2500 yards on 6 or so yards per carry or something crazy...but in reality they are a very mediocre rushing team, esp. when you take into account that TB, ATL, and CAR all have poor run defenses.

Just out of curiosity for those of you who actually watched....

How many players DID make the list at Justin's position? How many defensive linemen in general?

Just curious.

Not many, if they did they were from like the 40's-1970's era players.

the list is for current players...anyhow i think i counted 15 D-linemen. kinda hard to count and scroll at the same time...

oh nm, i thought u were talking about that lame one thaat nfl network did a few months back.

This one is lame too.

Yeah, although J. Smith made the Probowl, he just doesn't get that consistent attention.

Seriously. Devin Hester probably makes 10 impact plays a season, while JSmith disrupts the QB about 10 times a game (not to mention his dominance in the run game). We gotta get him into part of a commercial on NFL network, or maybe have coaches vote next year. If coaches vote, he's in.

i disagree, the pro bowl has become a farce, too many guys making it off of rep nowadays, every year deserving players dont make it cus some older on the way out well respected guy makes it (gonzalez over vd)

Andre Johnson has never made the playoffs and he was in the top-10...so why can't Justin Smith be in the top-100...

Take out Trash Mcnaab since he sucked last year and put in Smith

I thought Justin Smith was a lock for top 100, but looking at his numbers I see why he didn't make it. Justin Smith ranked: #127 in tackles with 70, #24 in sacks with 8.5, #164 in forced fumbles with 1. 49ers ranked last in tackles in NFL with 927 that might be why he is not feared like he should be. 49ers ranked 6th in sacks tho with 44.

He's a 3-4 DE. Those numbers mean nothing. He is one of the best at what he does and it's a joke that he was snubbed.
