Do 49er fans live in the past more than any other team?

That's a tough one to answer. Probably because I have always been a 49er fan and I don't really know how the fans of the other teams feel.

This is a very introspective post and particularly ignorant of the fact that many other teams have been a long time without success. Hey when you have 5 superbowls and then you get crap you have to remember the good times. But we are hardly the only team who has fans that remember the past. Any team who sucks and used to be good rememebers the past. The greater the gap between present failure and past success the more that will be. This isn't any more endemic of 49ers fans than others.

Go chat with a 30 something Bengals fan and all you will here about is the 80s, and browns fans who long for the days of Kosar and Shottenheimer, despite hating them when they blew it. THe gap is only less because the success was not as great. My brother lives in Miami and he went on a rant the other day complaining about how all of the football fans there won't shut up about how great Dan Marino was/is/would make the team.

I will agree however that we are the 2000's version of the 1980s green bay packers. Before Bret Favre and Mike Holmgren resurected that team you would look at GB on the schedule and tick off the wins. I remember being a 49ers fan in the 80's and doing that very thing and getting a stern lecture from an OLD MAN (probably about 30) about how good GB was and how I didn't understand and not to belittle the packers.

We weren't living in the past when Jeff Garcia was keeping hopes alive and playing probowl calliber football. We won't be in the past if we start winning in the present. So do we live in the past? Sure. more than other teams that suck and uesd ot be good? No.

This team hasnt been good in 8 years (actually, it's been downright awful), but most fans an "objectively" look at the roster and the emblem on the side of the helmet, and conclude that "We'll roll through the West", or "Conservatively 10-6, but probably 11-5 or 12-4", or "Arizona and Seattle aren't that good". Meanwhile, the Rams have leapfrogged SF.

Until proven otherwise, this team is a shade below mediocre. But after the draft and free agency, the confident playoff predictions will start rolling in.

It's sad, really.

how so???? We are better at every position except offensive line and possibly qb although smith did better and had a better rating. Their offense is below avg...has no playmakers
And on d their only good player left to wash. Chris long is good but then again we have better players at every position except the above listed ol and maybe qb.....and are a better team....

But yeah the rams have leapfrogged us. That was a good one

Bears have to be up there too...Looking all the way back to 85 and they want to talk about the greatest team ever...why didnt they repeat?

I'll say it's about half of the fans. Whether young or old.

The way I see it, 5 Superbowls were what they were. They are what brought this organization into greatness.

Now i say people are only stuck in the past, if when commenting on the current state of the team, you still compare to the old. I mean even the way the game is played has changed from then until now. So why you definitely cant overlook the past, we are in the present. And in the current state, i dont think they should even be compared to the teams of earlier.

Soo many bring up Montana, Young, Rice, Watters, Sanders for one year, Hanks, etc. I mean the players of the past are endless, even Garcia, Grbac, and a few others a little winning or not, but in my eyes still no comparison.

Instead of looking at the players, I say current uppermanagement couldnt even wipe the ass of Walsh or Eddie D in their prime.

Overall, we have to accept the 9ers have been who they are now, and have been since 02 in my opinion. Its starts with the top and works on down. So i finally feel that with the right head coach, we at least are going in the right direction.

I just hope some can just let go of the niners of 98 and earlier, that time has come and gone.
