This is turning into one of those "I have a fat girlfriend... but since I'm ugly I can't do any better" types of situations.

I`m sure Fangio wants alot of things. But ultimately its not up to him and I doubt he gets much say in the matter of our picks or roster to be honest. They may ask him some things but he is not a scout, He is a coach. He just coaches what they give him. There is a whole nother department who makes those decisions and grades on players.
I put this in another thread and thought it pertained here as well

Actually, I would speculate that the opinions of the coordinator and position coaches has a reasonable amount of weight in who gets drafted.
As I recall in last year's draft, Raye was often sighted in the 49ers draft war room.

Do you really believe Raye is/was qualified to make the call on a college player when he didnt even know who Brian Westbrook was?

Thinking of Jimmy Raye gives me these emotions in this order:

Looking back, you would want Jimmy Raye as far away from the draft room as possible. In fact, you probably wouldn't even want him near a football field.
However, I would say that position coaches and coordinators tend to have a small scale consultant type role in evaluating draft picks. I do not believe that they're completely left in the dark when draft time comes around. At the minimum, they offer their $0.02.

Fair enough, I was actually licking my chops when you referenced Raye.

Fangio believes in a 3-4 defense, with outside linebackers as primary pass rushers and frequent blitzes. He has apparently not been impressed by the play of Manny Lawson, now a free agent, so it’s unlikely the 49ers will try to persuade Lawson to return.
bad news i liked lawson a lot he was probally one of the best all around OLB in nfl and now were gonna have to find a replacement for him (hopefully laboy and brooks will be starters)
LOL @ being one of the best OLB's in the league when you play in a 3-4 defense and can't rush the passer.
Hes obviously doing something right to be tender a 1st rd pick. Lawson imho needs to be in a aggressive scheme to do more damage rushing the passer. The bend dont break scheme was complete bulls**t.

It didn't work for Nolan and it sure as hell didn't work for Singletary. At least now we have a creative and aggressive DC who isn't afraid to mix things up and bring the heat!

Woodley/Harrison. Osi/Tuck, Freeney/Mathis, Clemons/Brock, Long/Hall.

Except for Woodley/Harrison aren't the rest 4-3 teams? It's one thing to get a DE who rushs the passer. It's another to get and OLB that rushes, and covers in space.

Seriously, those guys are as just as hard to find as quarterbacks!

So very true and we haven't had a great pass rush in forever!
I think we go Quinn and a OLB in the 2nd like Moch or Brooks Reed. Killer combo and if we let Manny and Clements go we then have room to go after Nnamdi. I know it probably won't happen that way but would be a dream for me.

All good points and most are fair and objective. I see the Lawson situation similar to Alex in that there is no question (minus the public support from Fangio) we'd like a better player; particularly one that fits the new system better. But regarding Lawson, we don't know how Brooks/Laboy (if resigned) will fare as FT starters or how a new rookie will perform (e.g. Quinn). Haralson, we know he's a proven specialist off the bench and a decent backup.
Fangio has 5 years of tape on Lawson to review and the Niners are making a good move to keep bodies on the roster or at least get something for them if they leave...or ensure we can negotiate a realistic contract if nobody is willing to pony-up a first round pick.
The thing we need to remember is that this is a brand new defense so they will all be starting from scratch in many ways and coverage from the OLB will no longer be required.
Could Manny suddenly become a better pass rusher that other teams need to account for with a dominant pass rusher on the other side? Probably not...he will still be single blocked like he is now but at the same time, when you add a dominant pass rusher all 10 guys will play better and could be put in better positions to succeed.
So again, all good points and many things to think about but the Niners are doing the right thing so far...
