Carson had TO, Ocho, Jordan Shipley and a damn good young TE. His rating??? 82.4

Alex had Crabs (very average at this point), Morgan (mediocre at best) , and VD.. 82.1

Palmer has put up worse numbers in every successive season since 2005 (even disregarding injury season where he had a 69 rating)... Alex has improved every season.

Palmer has lost it folks. Alex is better at escaping pressure, throws less interceptions, is younger, and is trending upwards. Do the math.

Nice post but get ready for a litany of mouth foaming irrational responses like "u fuccckking Alexis dik luvr go root for teh smyth famlee!"
Harbaugh would have his work cut out of him. Alex has NEVER been able to improve on his weaknesses since he's been with the Niners. Harbaugh would need to put Alex thru QB 101 School. Is Alex willing to completely overhaul his game? If so, there is no guarantee that Alex has the skills needed to improve.

Here are Alex's weaknesses:

1. Inability to trust his receivers. Unless a WR is wide open, Alex will not throw the ball. Instead he'll check down or roll to the right (ie death roll).

2. Poor mechanics. Alex doesn't get his hips into his throws which results in very poor accuracy. He consistantly throws high and behind his receivers.

3. Poor pocket presence. Harbaugh wants a QB that has the innate ability to slide in order to escape the pass rush (see Joe Montana/Big Ben). Alex has never developed pocket presence.

4. Leadership. Alex is a great guy but he's not the born leader that this team needs. He doesn't inspire confidence in his fellow offensive players.

5. Below average accuracy. See point #2.

I think we should scrap the Alex Smith Experiment and send him to Seattle. Let's draft Stanzi, Devlin, Dalton or Ponder instead.
I made my comment mostly in jest because there really are some loons on NT. I agree with your points. I really don't think Alex is THAT bad. I also don't think CP is as horrible as his stats suggest. I think the guy is on a very dysfunctional team and could use a change of scenery. Worst case scenario is that he's a helluva better back up than Carr at a higher price. On a side note: watching Rodgers play right now is just sickening.

Nice. I've posted these things so many times, only to have my post replied by more excuses.

Alex is in his 6th year. He's developed a lot of his negative tendencies/weaknesses and its way too tough to reteach a 6th year vet. Good post BTW.

I don't think Alex is as bad as he's painted by many here. I also don't think Carson Palmer is as bad as others are saying here.

There is a reason why Palmer would rather retire than return to Cinncy, it was not a good situation.

If you listen to people on this board, there's not a good QB out there besides Manning and Brady.

Not that more needs to be added but....

6. Stares down the target he intends to throw to.

7. Is injury prone

8. Is turnover prone.

9. Has poor field reading skills and anticipation (similar to #1)

10. Always looks worse than our backup.

11. Plays his best when we are out of the playoff race or when he has put us in a hole that is too big to come out of.

12. Is a slow learner.

Harbaugh may be a good/great QB coach, but he isnt a magician.
0% because he is not staying! In addition, doesn't Alex need like 2 years to learn an offense? He would be starting back at square one and that will not bode well for him, as all the new offenses would....
I voted F**K ALEX SMITH.

THE FREAKIN SMALL HANDS BUST.
Alex Smith doesn't have the accuracy to be a franchise QB. He can be decent or maybe even pretty good, but not franchise caliber.

If he comes back, his main purpose will be either to backup the starter or be a "stop gap" starter while a young QB is groomed.

We've done enough math on Alex to last a lifetime......
Zero. No touch and not always accurate.
