Both Defense and Offense, in general, are fine.
We just need to improve in 3 areas:
1. QB
2. CB
3. FS
We applied decent pressure and of course it can improve, but the 3 areas above, we played like crap in.
Maybe we draft 3 DB's early in this draft and restart the dynasty.
Joe you know I love you man, but no matter who you have at CB or FS, if you have no pass-rush, the secondary will always get torched (eg NY Jets).
I agree, it's not like we don't have talent, speed and athletic ability in our OLB's (minus Parys). I think with a switch to 4-3 or a better designed plan, then we can get more pressure up front. Just look at what NE is doing with TBC.
What we can't do is tell Nate to cover better or tell Goldson to be better aware and more sound.
This is where we disagree bud. I don't think our guys at OLB are fast at all. One lasting impression watching old man McNabb OUTRUN Haralson and Lawson in the same game last season defined our talent at OLB. Add to that in a key game, a rook QB did the same thing. This was a recurring theme.
The 49ers can't get pressure unless they blitz and even when they blitz, they don't have the talent to consistently. I challenge you all to re-watch any game this season. It's the pass-rush.
"The pass rush has just killed the secondary," one observer said. "Last year they had a lot more sacks and dominated some games because of that. But not this year." Much of the pressure was expected to come from starting OLBs Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson, but entering Week 16, they had combined for six sacks — one more than free-agent addition Travis LaBoy, who had become the LB corps' most productive pass rusher before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

I excluded Parys from my speed comment. I think there's a lot of ability between LaBoy, Lawson (got much more pressure this year), and Brooks. I don't like to use this guy all of the time but TBC was not fast at all and he is not as athletic as the three mentioned. He has one move and NE uses him just right for that one move. It almost seems as though they use him against certain types of drops the QB will take so that the spin move alone creates a red flag to the QB in seeing him getting closer.
I just feel that anything done with the four rushers up front be it 3-4 or 4-3, has a lot to do with scheme and timing of the type of rush called according to the drop back of the QB.
So would you advocate being a 3-4/4-3 D? I think scheme is a piece of it, but there's no one opposing OCs have to account for on the edge.

And that's word,son.
Our oline is the biggest factor.
With three and outs, sacks that turn into fumbles, fumbles that turn into t.d.s,hurried passes that turn into picks, picks that turn into sideline arguments,''SETTLE .....DOWN..........settledown...'' field goals that are missed, time of possession that is lower than 10 minutes,
any defense will tire out ,have brainfarts and mistakes eventually.
I'm surprised our defense kept us in so many games. It's fu*king incredible.
I.E. First play of the season, NATE CLEMENTS PICK
Ricky Jeans Fransious convoy td, Making Matt Cassell pound the ground in frustration for two quarters before they busted out the cheeser plays, scoring defensive T.D.S BECAUSE OUR OFFENSE CANT'!
KEEPING GAMES AGAINST PLAYOFF AND SUPER BOWL CHAMPION TEAMS WITHIN 3 TO 5 POINTS!
OUR DEFENSE IS FINE, OUR OFFENSE NEEDS A TUNEUP.

They force the opposing QB into executing his weaknesses over his strengths. We just try to punch them in the mouth and don't give a crap about an opposing QB's strengths such as which direction he likes to throw, to which types of routes on the field and ...
