anyway, our D was horrible most of the time. don't let our stout run D fool you. it would be all good and dandy if we were playing in a run oriented league. unfortunately, people pass like mad these days and we suffered.

we are ranked 27th in the league when it comes to TO differentials.

TURRIBLE

24th against the pass

7th against run

i will agree, that our D got tired due to the lack to sustain long drives on O, but really, it can't be the main excuse.

It also seemed like when teams wanted to run the ball against us, they could. That stat is padded by the fact that other teams threw the ball so much against us.

Defense had plenty of games where they were just as much of the problem as the O.

Given a number of games where we had a lead or were tied going into the 4th qtr, our D never once pitched a shut out or got a 3 and out when we had to have it. Thats what makes a good D and not just keeping it close but closing out the game if it is close.

Having said that, I think if we get a pass rusher and another db we will be very close to having an top tier D.

Agreed, especially the last part.
Both Defense and Offense, in general, are fine.

We just need to improve in 3 areas:

1. QB
2. CB
3. FS

We applied decent pressure and of course it can improve, but the 3 areas above, we played like crap in.

Maybe we draft 3 DB's early in this draft and restart the dynasty.

Where's the offensive stats at?

That first topic, the offensive turnovers cancel out the defensive ones.

Huh? Wait, who are the 49ers biggest FA signings? Biggest extensions of their own players? They are all on D... Clements, J Smith, Willis, and Franklin.

The last high priced FA they signed on offense was Jonas Jennings and that was in 2005. The only guys they really paid to keep around in offense were Gore, Davis, and to some extent Staley, but the contracts on that side of the ball are dwarfed by what they've spent on D. They've definitely invested money on D, you can't say they haven't done that...

Justin Smith, Willis and Franklin are really good players. Unfortunately we have to start 8 other guys on defense.

We have invested quite a lot on the offense, but in draft picks, Crabtree 10th overall, 2 offensive linemen this year in the 1st round, vernon 6th overall.

Point is, with the players we have on defense, not many DC's would do much better than Manusky. You think if Capers was our DC Lawson would turn in to Clay Matthews? We don't have much talent. Our best pass rusher is maybe Travis LaBoy, Travis f**king LaBoy!

I completely agree! We are one of the worst team in the league with 3 and outs and time of possession which puts a huge toll on our defense.

Joe you know I love you man, but no matter who you have at CB or FS, if you have no pass-rush, the secondary will always get torched (eg NY Jets).

Exactly, Jets have a very talented secondary, yet they have been getting zero pressure. Look what Jay Cutler did to them. We need a premier pass rusher ala Clay Matthews, Demarcus Ware, Woodley, James Harrison. Not Haralson or LaBoy or Brooks.

I was only commenting on your comment that they haven't invested in the Defense in order to see results when, in fact, they have invested quite a bit in the defense. Way more so than the offense.

Our oline is the biggest factor.

With three and outs, sacks that turn into fumbles, fumbles that turn into t.d.s,hurried passes that turn into picks, picks that turn into sideline arguments,''SETTLE .....DOWN..........settledown...'' field goals that are missed, time of possession that is lower than 10 minutes,

any defense will tire out ,have brainfarts and mistakes eventually.

I'm surprised our defense kept us in so many games. It's fu*king incredible.

I.E. First play of the season, NATE CLEMENTS PICK
Ricky Jeans Fransious convoy td, Making Matt Cassell pound the ground in frustration for two quarters before they busted out the cheeser plays, scoring defensive T.D.S BECAUSE OUR OFFENSE CANT'!

KEEPING GAMES AGAINST PLAYOFF AND SUPER BOWL CHAMPION TEAMS WITHIN 3 TO 5 POINTS!

OUR DEFENSE IS FINE, OUR OFFENSE NEEDS A TUNEUP.

GET AN EX HEAD COACH AS AN O.C. OR AND EXPERIENCED O.C.

@ Tony starks wut games were u watching remember losing 4 games by 3 pts or less because of our so called good defense letting those big plays and losing it for the niners. CMON MAN!!!!
I agree that offense is a problem.. but it's not the only problem, the defense needs an updrade as well. We lost games to NO and ATL because the defense couldn't get a key stop.

We don't create enough turnovers because we don't have enough of a pass rush. turnovers are a byproduct of a good pass rush.

Our corners are OK but nowhere close to great and I can't see Clements coming back next year at 7 million or whatever is inflated salary will be.

Besides, there is no way of knowing what defense we'll be running next year.

I agree, it's not like we don't have talent, speed and athletic ability in our OLB's (minus Parys). I think with a switch to 4-3 or a better designed plan, then we can get more pressure up front. Just look at what NE is doing with TBC.

What we can't do is tell Nate to cover better or tell Goldson to be better aware and more sound.
